Donnie D's continuing operation at Daleville location without bagels
BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A fire on Friday temporarily closed the Donnie D's Bagels & Deli in Roanoke. It happened the day after owner Donnie DeGeorgis' birthday.
The fire damaged a number of appliances, including a 200-pound mixer that mixes all the bagel dough.
However, DeGeorgis lives in Daleville, and business continues where it started at its primary location, just without bagels.
'A lot of people are wondering on Facebook, 'Why can't you just make bagels here?'' DeGeorgis said. 'The mixer that we bought seven years ago from a company out of the Midwest brought it here for us, but we actually had to load it up the day that production stopped here in Daleville to take it to Roanoke, and without that mixer, you can't just mix up bagel dough.'
Donnie D's might not have bagels, but they're putting all their menu items on croissants, various rolls and a new item: biscuits.

It's something DeGeorgis did not picture selling when he first opened, but he said it was a natural transition, given the store's focus on breakfast meals. Currently, he said the customers agree.
'I think the feedback that we've gotten from our customers is they really like the biscuits,' DeGeorgis said. 'They're huge, they're delicious, biscuits and gravy and so many different options that they like to do.'
The Daleville store is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. As for the Roanoke store, DeGeorgis said he will start moving things out Thursday, and getting items replaced so it can reopen as soon as possible.
Donnie D's has set up a GoFundMe after a lot of requests from customers. People have currently raised more than $3,500 that will all go to the employees.
