Buddha Purnima celebrations unite communities with message of peace

Dehradun: The spirit of
compassion and peace
came alive as hundreds gathered on Monday to celebrate the
Vesak Buddha Purnima Mahotsav
— an annual event that marks the birth, enlightenment and 'Mahaparinirvana' of Lord by the
Doon Buddhist Committee
(DBC) at IRDT auditorium near Survey Chowk, the celebration was formally opened by Tsewang Phuntsok, Tibetan settlement officer for Uttarakhand, who praised the enduring relevance of
Buddha's teachings
in today's turbulent world.
"In an age of division and despair, Buddha's message of compassion is more vital than ever," he said, applauding the DBC's grassroots work across the sectors of health, animal welfare and environmental including Shaurya Chakra awardee Ku-ngo Dawa and Brigadier K G Behl (retd), lent their support on peace-building and resilience. Students from Tibetan schools and cultural groups from Clementown, Rajpur and Dekyiling performed traditional dances.
A recorded message from the president of the committee, Ven Khenchen Konchok Rangdol Rinpoche, who is currently in Vietnam , encouraged all to carry Buddha's wisdom into action. The 'Dhamma Ratna Award 2025' was also presented at the event. This year's honorees were the regional Tibetan youth congress of Dehradun, recognised for their community service and Dr Pankaj Pokhriyal, commended for his compassionate work in animal welfare.
