State grant aimed at making area around West Haven's Veterans Affair Hospital safer
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The area around West Haven's Veterans Affair Hospital is about to get a lot safer. The city and Governor Ned Lamont Monday announced a new state grant that will soon make changes in the area. Campbell Avenue would be one of the busiest roads in West Haven even without thousands of employees and patients going to the VA hospital every day. Veterans, officials rally against federal funding cuts affecting veterans' benefits 'That is why today, we are announcing that we have been awarded $1.8 million by the State of Connecticut Community Investment,' Mayor Dorinda Borer (D-West Haven) announced. City and state officials made that announcement at City Hall Monday morning. Some of the grant will go towards repaving streets and sidewalks around the hospital. 'The other day, I was driving in that area and there were kids on bikes, and they hopped off their bikes, and they lifted their bikes to walk over an unpatched area, and then they got on their bikes, and they kept riding,' State Rep. Trenee McGee (D-West Haven) said. It is even tougher on the vision impaired patients who come to the hospital. 'With the sidewalks lifted and trees coming through them, we've had a number of fall victims,' West Haven's Emergency Management Director Rick Fontana said. 'So, this is going to make a huge, huge difference.' Veterans depart from Bradley for Honor Flight Connecticut Another improvement you will see in the coming months is blue light boxes. They will be installed right here on the sidewalk, with communication devices that put you directly in touch with emergency services, and they will have cameras in them, too. There will also be measures to calm traffic through the area, making things even safer for pedestrians. The governor said it is part of an ongoing, statewide effort. 'Little investments like this that show we believe in your community, you believe in your community, have pride in your community, and you see these bits of improvement every day that make a difference,' Lamont said. West Haven to receive $10 million FEMA grant for floodwall construction
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The city of West Haven was awarded a $10 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to construct a flood wall to protect the city's wastewater treatment plant, the mayor announced on Thursday. The grant will fund the design and construction of a floodwall at the West Haven wastewater treatment plant and the wastewater pumping station on Blohm Street. The plant, located near the shoreline, has experienced flooding in severe weather and suffered damage to equipment. The city says it takes thousands of dollars to repair. Construction is projected to begin in mid-to-late 2026 following a community engagement roundtable this summer. A 25% cost match will be included in the FEMA grant, which the city says is in the 2024 budget cycle. 'This critically important FEMA grant will protect our wastewater treatment plant against flooding and rising seas,' West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer said. 'If the sewer plant is negatively impacted by significant flooding causing a compromise of the infrastructure, it could create a devastating impact across the city and Long Island Sound, and that is why everyone has worked collaboratively to bring this to fruition.' The funding will be awarded as a Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities subgrant through the state Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. 'I'm grateful for every state and federal agency that stepped up to help West Haven, including the Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection,' Borer said. West Haven and University of New Haven partner to offer higher education opportunities to first responders, local students
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A new partnership between the City of West Haven and the University of New Haven will give first responders and local high school graduates the opportunity to further their education. 'Beginning in the Fall of 2025, every police officer, every firefighter, every 9-1-1 dispatcher, will now be able to attend the University of New Haven covered through a 100% scholarship offered by the University of New Haven,' West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer said. Borer said this is 'over a $100,000 benefit' for city public safety workers. Avon student dominates Pi Day competition, recites 540 digits from memory 'Really gaining that hands-on practical experience that contributes to job creation and economic development, to have that in West Haven at the university is something so incredibly important,' Jens Frederiksen, the University of New Haven president, said. Police officers and firefighters News 8 spoke with said it's an opportunity they're excited about. 'With family, life happens, young kids, financially, it's been impossible to get back to school,' Capt. Jacob Urban of West Haven's Center Fire District said. 'Knowing how important higher education is, I'm elated.' West Haven Police Officer Vincent D'Ancicco added, 'I think this is a great opportunity with working for the city of West Haven and going to UNH [University of New Haven] to further my education, getting my bachelor's degree and maybe my master's degree.' This initiative also benefits high school graduates. Where to see cherry blossom trees in Connecticut this April 'Currently, graduating high school students that reside in the city of West Haven are offered a 50% scholarship if you attend West Haven High School, Notre Dame, and Esums,' Borer said. 'Through our conversations, we agreed that it's important to offer it to all graduating high school students that reside in West Haven.' That benefit currently stands for city employees, as well. 'We've had that in place for several years, but only two people have taken advantage of it because they didn't know about it,' Borer explained. Borer also announced the University of New Haven is purchasing North End Field from the city. The lot off Campbell Avenue has been unused for years and will be part of the university's expansion.
