America's largest sandwich chain quietly shuttered 631 locations
Subway's has fewer than 20,000 locations in the US for the first time in 20 years. The popular sandwich chain shut 631 underperforming restaurants last year, bringing the total to 19,502, according to franchise filings. It marks the eighth straight year Subway has shuttered restaurants in its home country. It peaked at around 27,000 stores in 2015. Despite the decline, Subway still holds the title of America's largest restaurant chain by location count. The company has faced mounting competition, changing customer tastes, and lower average sales per store compared to rivals—all contributing to its steady pullback. Multiple franchisees have also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection , and the chain abruptly closed 23 locations across two states after a bank hacking nightmare . The 200 workers were left 'totally blindsided' by the 23 store closures and were left jobless. Subway said its 'opening new restaurants as well as relocating or closing locations as needed, to ensure a consistent, high-quality and convenient guest experience.' Subway has struggled financially for several years and was acquired by Roark Capital Group in 2023 . The Subway heirs agreed to sell the chain to Roark Capital for $9.6 billion following months of acquisition rumors . The move did not improve the chain's sales in the US, but it continues to be successful in its international expansion. It continues to operate over 37,000 restaurants worldwide and is America's largest sandwich chain. It's also the third-largest restaurant chain in the world, behind McDonald's and Starbucks. 'Subway achieved positive global net restaurant growth for the second consecutive year,' a Subway spokesperson said in a statement to QSR magazine . The chain is also focusing on 'Smart Growth,' a development strategy focusing on increasing its profits and protecting its marketing position. Some of the plans in this strategy include opening new restaurants and relocating stores to ensure a 'consistent, high-quality and convenient guest experience.' Subway is continuing to revamp its stores to fit its Fresh Forward 2.0 design. The design includes new elements like bold wall graphics with messages, elevated lighting, and support for the growth in digital innovations. 'Fresh Forward 2.0' will be implemented in all Subway restaurants worldwide in the coming months. Besides financial and design restructuring, Subway made headlines for switching over to Pepsi from Coca-Cola beverages. Fans were outraged by the decision, which the restaurant chain confirmed would happen last year. Subway was also replaced by fellow sandwich chain Jersey Mike's as the official fast food sponsor of the NFL . Other talked about changes Subway made over the last few months including offering the new limited-time Doritos Footlong Nachos and will relaunch its $6.99 any footlong deal tomorrow until May 31. As Snacking Surges, Subway Launches $5 Footlong Nachos. Say What?
Subway and Doritos have teamed up to introduce the Doritos Footlong Nachos. Subway, the 37,000-restaurant sandwich chain most synonymous with its iconic $5 footlong subs of the past, is taking a bold step into uncharted territory. This time, it won't be a sandwich but a snack that grabs headlines: footlong nachos. Yes, you read that right. Subway has partnered with Doritos to introduce a 12-inch $5 Dorito nacho creation as a new addition to its growing Sidekicks menu, a move intended to attract both the budget-conscious and the snack-loving consumer. Designed to be customized and shared, these footlong nachos start with a base of nacho cheese–flavored Doritos chips, layered with cheddar cheese, jalapeño slices, diced tomatoes, red onions, and chipotle sauce. For those looking to make it a meal, you can add rotisserie-style chicken or steak at no extra charge. Or upgrade with avocado for an additional cost. Subway's Sidekicks menu has been steadily expanding since being introduced last year. It includes a variety of 12-inch treats, from footlong cookies and Cinnabon churros to soft pretzels from Auntie Anne's. Given the lack of a consistent definition of a snack, most Americans define a snack as 'eating or drinking something between meals.' Over the past decade, Americans' snacking has surged in popularity, with 74% snacking at least once every day and more than half of all Americans replacing traditional meals with snacking or smaller meals. Which foods are most popular for snacks? Sweet (59%), salty (58%) and crunchy (48%) foods take the top slots, and nearly half of snacks are paired with a beverage. Subway's foray into nachos is calculated and designed to tap into these shifting consumer preferences around snacking. The Data confirms, people love snacking now more than ever. Group of Sweet and Salty Snacks. According to Douglas Fry, Subway's North America president, younger customers are increasingly gravitating toward snacking. They want food that's convenient, portable and, most importantly, budget-friendly. Over the past year, restaurant chains have been scrambling to attract customers who are feeling the pinch of inflation. The $5 price point for the nachos is a nod to the chain's famous $5 footlong subs, which debuted in 2008. The promotion helped define its brand in the 2000s, and for many, it put sandwiches on the fast-food map. But in many ways, it also put the brand in a box, and with the addition of controversies around their 'yoga matt' ingredient, their spokesperson Jared and the death of their cofounder Fred Deluca, Subway was no longer an option for many clients. The launch of footlong nachos is just the latest in a series of moves aimed at reinventing Subway's brand. From adding customization options to its menu, pushing app-based orders and increasing international presence—to perhaps, most notably, offering freshly sliced meats—the brand is seeking a major departure from its previous practice of using presliced cold cuts to stay relevant in a highly competitive fast-food landscape. CRYSTAL RIVER, FLORIDA - DECEMBER 19: Irresistible new Subway Sidekicks include a Footlong Cookie, ... More Footlong Cinnabon Churro, and Footlong Pretzel from Auntie Anne's on December 19, 2023 in Crystal River, Florida. (Photo byfor Subway) By diversifying its menu and leaning into trends like snacking and customization, Subway is positioning itself as more than just a sandwich chain. The big question, of course, is whether footlong nachos will resonate with customers. The chain's forays into non-sandwich territory haven't always been successful. Remember its ill-fated attempt at pizza? Exactly. There's also the risk of alienating core customers who see Subway as a sandwich-first brand. While Sidekicks are designed to complement the chain's main offerings, there's always the possibility that these new offerings could dilute the brand's identity. In an industry where innovation is often the key to survival, the chain is betting that its willingness to experiment will pay off. And who knows? If the $5 footlong nachos catch on, they could become as iconic as the subs that inspired them. With big news recently on Jersey Mike's agreeing to sell a majority ownership position to private equity funds managed by Blackstone, valuing the food chain at $8 billion, and with Chipotle's founder making the Forbes billionaire list, there's a lot of growth, movement and opportunity in on-the-go food. Subway's latest creation is a reminder that even the most established brands need to evolve to stay relevant. In a world where consumers are looking for value, convenience and a little bit of fun, footlong nachos just might be the perfect recipe. Say what you will about the idea, but one thing's for sure: it's got people talking. And in the fast-food game, that's half the battle.

Subway Reveals New Footlong Menu Item —And Next Week, It's Free for Fans
First came the sandwiches, then the cookies. Now, nachos are the newest footlong offering. Subway's latest menu item is crunchy, cheesy and 12 inches: Doritos Footlong Nachos. The new addition is a limited-time option and combine the chips people know with the Subway toppings fans love. The $5 footlong snack, available starting Thursday, April 3, pours out a bag of Doritos Nacho Cheese chips. The chips are topped with cheddar cheese sauce and shredded Monterey cheddar cheese, chopped tomatoes, onions, pickled jalapeño slices and a drizzle of the sandwich spot's Baja chipotle sauce. Customers looking for a punch of protein can add rotisserie-style chicken or steak at no additional cost or can pay extra for a scoop of smashed avocado. PEOPLE got early access to the 12-in. snack and were pleasantly surprised by the item. The chips stayed crunchy and the toppings were fresh because they are stacked for each customer as they order. Testers preferred the rotisserie-style chicken to the steak because the former topping crisped up in the oven and provided a nice textural contrast to the gooey cheese sauce. Unsuspecting testers thought the nachos came from Taco Bell (considering the Mexican-inspired snack and that Taco Bell serves other Doritos items, like the Doritos Locos Tacos ) but the distinct Subway sauce made the item recognizable. The one complaint was that the footlong promise made some testers expect a 12-in. chip but were disappointed that it was just the usual Doritos just served on a 12-in. plate. The nachos join a lineup of other long snacks including the footlong cookies, Cinnabon churros, Auntie Anne's pretzels and meat and cheese wraps called Dippers. Subway released another limited-time treat, the footlong Oreo cookie, earlier this year but it is no longer available. Related: Dairy Queen Has 85-Cent Blizzards for 2 Weeks Just in Time to Try Their Summer Menu Reward members can celebrate the new menu items on Thursday, April 10, with a freebie. Customers can try the nachos for free with the purchase of any footlong sub. The offer will be available online or on the Subway app. Reward members can also redeem the deal in-stores when using the phone number associated with the account. Rumors swirled about the cheesy menu item back in December 2024. Popular food blogger @snackolator posted on Dec. 11 that Subway was testing and will soon be serving Doritos-based nachos. "Subway is getting wild with the footlong menu with Doritos Footlong Nachos!" the blogger wrote on Instagram, explaining that the item was 'being tested in a number of stores around the country.' At the time, PEOPLE reached out to both Subway and Frito-Lay for comment but did not receive an immediate response. Read the original article on People
