BBC The One Show viewers 'in bits' as hosts honour 'special' WWII veteran

The One Show viewers were left in tears as Alex Jones and Lauren Laverne introduced a special VE Day segment on Thursday The One Show viewers were left in tears after an emotional VE Day surprise aired this Thursday (May 8). During the latest edition of the hit BBC programme, hosts Alex Jones and Lauren Laverne discussed the latest headlines from across the UK. ‌ As part of today's Victory in Europe commemorations, the pair introduced the One Big Thank You segment. Each week, the show praises someone who has gone the extra mile to help others in their community. ‌ "We have a very special One Big Thank You, because tonight, on the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we're honouring 100-year-old Dorothea from Hertfordshire," Lauren began, reports the Express. In 1943, Dorothea Barron joined the Women's Royal Naval Service, where she worked as a signaller using semaphore and Morse code. She joined as soon as she turned 18 years old. "To join the wrens, you had to be five foot three, but my mother's never been five foot three. What she did when she went for interview was put cardboard cut-outs in her shoes to make her a little bit taller," Dorothea's daughter, Kati, explained. Dorothea met her husband, Andrew, after they both served during the war. Andrew was an RAF navigator and they married in 1948. After more than 70 years together, Andrew sadly passed away in 2021. Now, Dorothea continues to campaign to keep the memory of her fellow veterans alive. ‌ To thank her for all her hard work, The Traitors winner Leanne Quigley surprised Dorothea with her own military flypast as RAF Coningsby. Dorothea was brought to tears by the surprise, saying: "I'm absolutely overwhelmed... It's been an honour to be here." ‌ After hearing her story, the show's viewers were also left feeling emotional, with many taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share their reactions. "Someone pass me a tissue. Dorothea is a wonderful lady, God Bless you sweetheart," one person wrote, while another added: "Amazing lady." "That was bloody beautiful," a third said, with another sharing: "Oh that made me cry." A fifth viewer echoed the sentiment, saying: "God I'm in tears - Dorothea is incredible," with another writing: "In absolute bits here."

Jon Bon Jovi celebrates 36 years of marriage with wife Dorothea one year after his cheating confession

Jon Bon Jovi celebrated his 36th wedding anniversary with wife Dorothea Hurley by uploading a sweet tribute to his Instagram page on Tuesday. The Livin' On A Prayer hitmaker, 63, also shared a throwback snap of the couple in the post - one year after the singer admitted he 'hasn't been a saint' during his relationship with Hurley, 62. The pair tied the knot in 1989 at the Graceland Wedding Chapel located in Las Vegas - and are also parents to four children: Stephanie, 31, Jesse, 30, Jake, 22 and Romeo, 21. In one image, the performer shared a picture of 36 red roses that were in a glass vase on top of a table. Jon could also be seen cozying up to his high school sweetheart in a throwback photo as they posed outdoors. He sported a blue suit and flashed a cheerful smile as Dorothea wore a strapless, white dress which was paired with white gloves. Lastly, the rock singer shared a photo of a sign at the chapel the lovebirds said 'I do' at. It reads: 'Graceland Wedding Chapel. The original world famous home of ceremonies with the 'King." Rock star Jon Bon Jovi was married here.' In the caption, he penned to his 2.4 million followers: '36 roses for 36 amazing years Happy anniversary my love….' Last year during an interview with People, the star reflected on tying the knot with Dorothea and revealed that the marriage had 'shocked everybody.' He recalled, 'We were in Los Angeles, California, the band was on the road on the New Jersey tour, and if you opened up the curtains of my hotel room, there's a big billboard of the five of us [Bon Jovi band members] staring into my window. 'My girlfriend, who was my fiancée at the time, we had a night off, and I said, "I need a higher high - I got an idea. Let's go to Vegas now." And she said, "Now?" I said, "Now."' Jon and Dorothea went to Las Vegas and the taxi driver had been their witness during the lowkey ceremony. When it was revealed that the pair had married, the singer said 'it shocked a lot of people - shocked about everybody: the band, management, agents, lawyers, parents, you name it. In one image, the performer shared a picture of 36 red roses that were in a glass vase on top of a table 'It's a shame because it should have been a beautiful moment, but after we did it, people were trying to take it away until I stood up and went, "Wait a minute, why are we living our life for anyone else?" And 35 years later, we're still married.' Also last year, Jon admitted that he 'has not been a saint' amid his marriage while talking to The Independent. 'These are all the wonderful clichés of rock stardom. It's about never lying about having been a saint, but not being a fool enough to [mess] up the home life, either,' he told the outlet. In regards to their long-lasting relationship, he explained it was due to a 'mutual admiration society, and being lucky enough to have grown up together.' On his 1993 track titled Bed Of Roses, the singer had belted out lyrics about regretting past dalliances. He also seemingly hinted that he had been with 100 women during the ABC special Michael Strahan x Jon Bon Jovi: Halfway There. At one point, Strahan said that the singer's stardom which began at a young age could have been 'tough on a relationship.' Jon said, 'I got away with murder. I'm a rock and roll star. I'm not a saint. I'm not saying that there weren't 100 girls in my life. I'm Jon Bon Jovi. It was pretty good!' He added, 'But if you think I'm ever going to jeopardize my anything for believing the narcissist in me was real? 'What a stupid thing to do. What kind of excesses does a man need that's going to fuel that fire? It's just not worth it.' After his interview with The Independent, the singer was spotted at the screening of his documentary series Thank You Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story - but his wife was not in attendance. However, the real reason that she did not make an appearance at the event was soon revealed. A source explained to Page Six at the time that she had COVID but was 'feeling well and recovered.' Jon and Dorothea first crossed paths in 1980 when they were students at Sayreville War Memorial High School in New Jersey. The performer previously told People that he had been 'immediately drawn' to Hurley when he first saw her. 'And that's never changed - 40 years ago.' He added, 'Having grown up together and grown together. And we really like each other. We want to hang out.' The star also revealed that he would let Dorothea 'cheat' off his work in one of their history classes. Dorothea joined in on the conversation and said, 'I always said I was good at spotting potential too. I have a gift. He's cute. I'm shallow. I'll admit it!' The singer added, 'We enjoy each other and we never fell for the trappings of what celebrity can do. 'We've witnessed that happen over the years to people that were close to us and people that we knew from afar. It's just what I do, it's not who I am. I write songs. I happen to be very good at performing them. That's it.' His second youngest son, Jake, is notably married to Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown. They tied the knot in a private ceremony last year and the rock singer was one of the guests.
