Dothan 15-year-old set to graduate high school

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Dothan high schoolers who will walk across the stage this May will be joined by a standout student. That student is 15-year-old Darinda Beacham. According to Dothan City Schools, Beacham transferred to Dothan High School from a homeschool program with advanced English, math, and science credits. She had already completed core courses for the ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades. While focusing on her twelfth-grade coursework, Beachman also earned her college and career readiness requirements in business. Beachman will graduate from DCS with a 3.5 GPA. 'I plan to go to college in the fall. I am excited, maybe a little scared, and happy all at the same time,' Beacham said in a release from DCS. DCS says Beachman plans to enter the medical field. ‘Beloved' Dothan bus driver dies at bus depot

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — The Dothan City School family is mourning the loss of a 'cherished friend and colleague' after his unexpected death Monday night. Dennis Cole died on Monday, April 14. He was 74. Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd tells WDHN that Cole died of heart related issues at the Dothan City Schools Bus Barn. According to Dothan City Schools, Cole has worked with the Dothan City Schools Transportation since 2013. 'Dennis touched countless lives through his dedicated service, whether driving various routes or lending his compassionate hand as the aide on special needs bus 50 to Slingluff Elementary and DPA,' Dothan City Schools said in a post. Cole was named Employee of the Year in DCS in 2018-2019. Cole leaves behind a wife and two daughters. 'We will forever cherish the memories and light Dennis brought into our lives,' DCS said. Dothan Schools considered failing in English proficiency despite slight increase

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — Dothan City Schools, along with the rest of the Wiregrass, is still in the red for English learning despite a slight increase over the past three years, recent state data shows. According to the Alabama State Report Card, Dothan City Schools scored nearly 45% out of 100 in progress in English language proficiency for the 2023-24 school year. Despite being a low score, this is nearly an 8% increase from the 2020-21 school year, when DCS scored 37%. Of all the school systems in the Wiregrass that were scored in progress in English language proficiency, Dothan City Schools was the second highest, only behind Geneva County Schools at 59.46%. Dale County Schools scored 31.58%, and Enterprise City Schools, the second largest school system in the Wiregrass by number of students, scored 42% out of 100.
