U2's Bono calls to ‘stop war' as band perform Sunday Bloody Sunday at The Ivors

The performance came as the group became the first Irish songwriters to be awarded an academy fellowship at the 70th year of the awards ceremony, hosted at London's Grosvenor House on Thursday. Accepting the award from pop star Ed Sheeran, the group members each received an award with Bono – whose real name is Paul David Hewson – making a call for peace. (Doug Peters/PA) While the singer made his acceptance speech, The Edge, real name Daniel Evans, began to strum the chords of their war song Sunday Bloody Sunday. The song references the 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings in Londonderry, where members of the British army's Parachute Regiment opened fire at civil rights demonstrators. He said: 'I used to introduce this next song by explaining that it wasn't a rebel song. 'It was because believing in the possibilities of peace was, then and is now a rebellious act, and some would say a ridiculous one, to believe peace was attainable between your country and ours, between our country and itself was a ridiculous idea that we're pleased we hold on to very tightly right now. Bono during a photocall for Bono: Stories of Surrender at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France. (Doug Peters/PA) 'Peace creates possibilities in the most intractable situations. Lord knows, there's a few of them out there right now. 'Hamas release the hostages. Stop war. Israel be released from Benjamin Netanyahu. 'All of you protect our aid workers, they are the best of us.' The group ended the evening with a performance of their 1988 song Angel Of Harlem. Hosted by The Ivors Academy, the award ceremony aims to recognise and celebrate 'exceptional achievements in songwriting and screen composing'. Pop star Robbie Williams took home the Icon Award at the songwriting award ceremony, describing it as a 'beautiful thing to be given'. He told PA news agency: 'It feels all sorts of different things. It feels uneasy to receive, to be bestowed a 'we love you' or 'we like you'. I don't think that artists, singers, actors, I don't think it sits very well with them, unless you're a complete egomaniac and a narcissist, in which case you already think that and know that. 'It's a beautiful thing to be given.' The singer is due to release a new album, Britpop, in the autumn and is due to start his UK, Ireland and European tour on May 31 in Edinburgh. Speaking about the new album, he said: 'They (fans) can expect high octane guitars, at least for a few releases, until I jump back into pop, because we all get scared. 'The new music video features me being punkish. I hope people like it.'

Abilene Chamber of Commerce salutes small business

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – This week marks a week of national recognition with the annual Celebrating Small Business Week, and the Abilene Chamber of Commerce held a special luncheon to honor our Big Country small businesses. Since 1963, our country has set aside one week a year to honor and celebrate small businesses all across America. As part of that annual tradition, the Abilene Chamber of Commerce held their Salute to Small Business Luncheon where dozens of area small businesses and local leaders gathered to honor and recognize these businesses for their service to the community. Abilene Chamber of Commerce President Doug Peters expands on why they feel it is important to recognize these unique businesses. 'They are the catalyst for helping to drive what is good about our country. There's something special that exists in an entrepreneur and a small business owner that most people just don't have. It's a spirit, and it's really fun to help celebrate that among the people who helped drive this economy,' Peters explains. The Abilene Chamber received nearly 200 nominations this year for a variety of small business award categories. These categories included the Community Investment Award which went to Potosi Live, Family-Owned Business of the Year, which goes to Gary's Floral Gallery and the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award was bestowed to Dr. Jodi Hierholzer of Body Worx PT & Performance. One stand-out award recipient came when the Abilene Flying Bison baseball team was awarded New Business of the Year, and Flying Bison General Manager John Stark expressed how their fans are the ones that made this honor possible. 'We call all of our fans the Flying Faithful. One of the things that make us unique is that we are, you know, we are so community driven. It's what drives us every day. We are just extremely proud to be able to win this award,' Stark says. The Flying Bison ironically earned a trophy that reflects the team perfectly with the chambers 'Bison Award', with Doug Peters of the Abilene Chamber explaining the deeper representation of this award as it relates to these small businesses. 'It's so classic because it ties so well to our community,' Peters explains. 'The bison is an animal that will run toward a storm. It doesn't turn and run away from it. And when you think about that entrepreneurial spirit that exists in so many of our small business owners, that's what they do. They don't take the easy way out.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
