Adrian Breakfast Lions Club ready to hit the airwaves in April for 29th radio auction

ADRIAN, Mich. — 'We serve.' It's a simple two-word phrase, but it's to the point and at the heart of what the mission is of Lions clubs internationally and locally. The Adrian Breakfast Lions Club — one of the few remaining Lions clubs in Lenawee County with 11 volunteer members strong — is gearing up for its biggest fundraiser of the year: the Adrian Breakfast Lions Club annual Radio Auction. This year marks the club's 29th anniversary of raising money for the benefit of Adrian and Lenawee County residents through its radio auction, scheduled for April 26 — a Saturday — from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the online radio station 'The Local Buzz,' 'The Local Buzz' serves Lenawee, Hillsdale, Jackson and Monroe counties as well northwest Ohio with classic hits and tunes across the decades, along with local news, weather and 'Talk Back' with Doug Spade and Mike Clement weekly on Saturday mornings. 'Again, we will be collaborating with the Hillsdale Lions Club in sharing the work and the proceeds to benefit the citizens of Hillsdale County,' Adrian Breakfast Lions Club President Terry Hicks said in an announcement. 'We will be auctioning off merchandise and services donated by businesses, individuals and organizations. The merchandise and services will be described on the air and listeners will bid by telephone. Every business that donates will have its name mentioned along with the item(s) donated.' From October 2023: Doug Spade, Mike Clement launch online radio station Local Buzz Radio All items donated must have a retail value of at least $20. Otherwise, they may be grouped with other items to reach the $20 minimum, Hicks said. Individual items valued at more than $100 will be placed in a special 'Big Board' category and receive numerous mentions throughout the day. Donations of items for the radio auction are being accepted and can be sent to Adrian Breakfast Lions Club, P.O. Box 412, Adrian, MI, 49221, or arrangements can be made to have merchandise picked up by calling 517-263-5473. It brings in quite a bit of money, too: anywhere from $9,000 to $10,000 each year, Treasurer Larry Atkin told The Daily Telegram. Over the past 28 years, the radio auction has raised nearly $303,000 to help citizens and programs in the community including vision care, college scholarships and classroom supplies for the visually and auditory impaired, youth projects and the Leader Dog program of Michigan. In addition, they have supported the Penrickton Center for Blind Children, Midwest Eye Bank, Michigan Braille Transcribing, Paws with a Cause, the Associated Charities Christmas toy collection, the Shop with a Cop program, our "Evening with Santa" program, the Croswell Theater, Adrian Area Little League, the Adrian Symphonic Orchestra and others, Hicks said.
