Lidl is giving customers a free glazed yeast doughnut with any purchase and the MyLidl app. Use the code FREEDONUT in the app to redeem the deal. Maverik says its Nitro cardholders can redeem one free doughnut Friday while Adventure Club members and Kum & Go's &Rewards members get 50% off doughnuts. THIS year, Doughnut Day falls on Friday 6th June. Since 1938, the first Friday in June has been recognised as National Doughnut Day. In 1917, the Salvation Army began providing spiritual and emotional support for US soldiers during World War One. Female volunteers travelled to France and set up small stations near the front lines. They provided clothes, supplies and food, including baked goods. The story goes that due to limited supplies and tight conditions in the makeshift huts that they used for bases, the volunteers began frying the doughnuts in soldiers' helmets. They came to be known as the Doughnut Girls or Doughnut Lassies. An estimated 150 donuts were served on the first day. However, by the time their operation was fully established, it is said that between 2500 and 9000 doughnuts were handed out daily. To recognise the efforts of these volunteers and the difference that their work made to the soldiers' morale, the first National Donut Day was held in Chicago in 1938.
