Environment minister sets out green goals as national agriculture centre and museum are launched
The Minister of Climate Change and the Environment has set out the UAE's green vision, supported by the launch of an agriculture hub to help develop a fresh crop of farmers and bolster food security, and a museum celebrating farming history. Dr Amna Al Dahak told The National about moves to champion home-grown produce as the Emirates launched the National Agricultural Museum and announced the start of operations by the National Agriculture Centre. The museum, inside the exhibition space at the Adnec Centre in Al Ain, takes visitors on an immersive journey charting the rise of UAE agriculture – from traditional oasis farming to today's high-tech greenhouses. It was unveiled as part of the four-day Emirates Agriculture Conference, which concludes on Saturday and has brought together governments bodies, start-ups and universities. 'As part of our national Emirates Agriculture Conference and Exhibition, and this first edition, we made sure that we're not only talking about creating collaborations and partnerships in the agriculture sector for a sustainable growth but also to show the whole story behind the agricultural sector,' Dr Al Dahak told The National. The museum covers 100 square metres inside the sprawling exhibition space and is open to all conference attendees. 'It captures three time zones,' Dr Al Dahak said. 'One is the past, since the inception of the UAE and the start of agricultural development, specifically when it started in Al Ain, then moving to the current state of agriculture, and then looking at the future of agriculture.' 'We have interactive experiences, because you need to ensure that the audience move out of it with new knowledge, with new understanding and new vision of how they can support the sector.' Dr Al Dahak said the museum's future extends beyond the agriculture exhibition and an announcement on that would be made soon after the event. National Agriculture Centre starts operations The National Agriculture Centre is a flagship initiative under the Plant the Emirates national programme. Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi, undersecretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, outlined ambitious goals for the centre, including increasing productive farms by 20 per cent, expanding organic farms by 25 per cent and reducing agricultural waste by 50 per cent. 'This centre will be the engine room for agricultural transformation in the UAE,' he said. 'It will provide hands-on training, expert consultancy and tailored support to farmers while driving innovation through partnerships and applied research.' Veteran agribusiness leader Sultan Salem Al Shamsi was announced as the centre's director. With more than 25 years of experience in smart agriculture, agri-finance and value chain development, Dr Al Shamsi is expected to lead the centre's drive to make UAE-grown food more competitive in local and global markets. Young people at the centre of transformation Engaging young people has been a theme of the conference, with a youth council established to help involve the next generation. 'We're always capturing the interest, the vision and making the youth an inseparable part of the process of this development,' said Dr Al Dahak. The minister added that government, private sector, academic and international co-operation are vital to them UAE's farming future.

'Favourite young farmer': Meet 10-year-old who grows fruits, vegetables in his backyard
At just 10 years old, Musleh Saeed Al Aryani has already made a name for himself in the world of agriculture. His journey began at the tender age of four during visits to his grandmother's farm, where he first fell in love with the art of farming. Now, six years later, he has transformed his small backyard into a thriving garden, growing a variety of fruits and vegetables that he uses to create his unique recipes for "protein bombs," a nutritious mix of natural, vegan ingredients. Recently, Musleh was recognised at an agricultural exhibition, where he was introduced by Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment. During her speech, she affectionately referred to him as her 'favourite young farmer,' highlighting the importance of young talents in the agricultural sector. "My first plant was watercress," Musleh recalled. "I started farming by watching my grandmother and trying to replicate what she did. At first, I was a bit disruptive, but now I've gotten much better." His dedication reflects the wisdom of Sheikh Zayed, who famously said, "Give me agriculture and I will give you civilisation." Musleh's garden is now home to an impressive array of crops, including carrots, peppers, garlic, eggplant, potatoes, cauliflower, cherry peppers, and cherry tomatoes. He credits his success to perseverance: "If I mess up, I don't stop; I just keep going." Initially given a small plot in his yard, Musleh's farming space has expanded as he gained confidence and skill. With the support of his father, Saeed, who provided guidance and tools, Musleh has achieved self-sufficiency for his family through his produce. "My mother helps me with everything," Musleh added. Together, they create diverse recipes, including a protein bomb made from mung beans mixed with olive oil and thyme. Other ingredients he loves to use are fenugreek, cumin, turmeric, and black cumin. Musleh's journey has not only been about growing food but also about sharing his passion. He proudly displays his products at exhibitions and maintains an active presence on Instagram, where he connects with fellow farming enthusiasts. As he looks to the future, Musleh dreams of becoming an agricultural engineer, driven by a desire to innovate and expand his farming practices. "I want to keep growing and learning," he says, embodying the spirit of the UAE's commitment to agricultural transformation. Dr. Amna emphasised the importance of supporting Emirati farmers during her speech, stating, "Food security cannot be achieved without well-supported farmers."

UAE to launch first-ever national museum showcasing agricultural history
The UAE is set to open its first specialised museum dedicated to the country's agricultural journey. The National Agricultural Museum will be officially inaugurated during the UAE Agricultural Exhibition, held at the Adnec Centre in Al Ain from May 28 to 31. Speaking at a press conference attended by Khaleej Times, Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said the museum would celebrate the country's agricultural heritage, showcase its current achievements, and highlight future plans. Designed as an interactive and educational experience, the museum will incorporate advanced technology and rich historical content to tell the story of agriculture in the UAE — from its early roots before the union to present-day advancements. Although the museum's exact location is yet to be revealed, it will serve as a lasting tribute to key figures whose pioneering efforts helped transform agriculture in various regions in the country. 'We will highlight pioneering experiences such as those of the late Sheikh Zayed and his efforts in developing the agricultural sector, particularly in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi, and the experiments he conducted in Saadiyat in 1968.' Dr Al Dahak emphasised that this initiative supports national efforts to empower Emirati farmers. Despite the challenges of farming in arid desert conditions, the UAE's agricultural sector has made remarkable progress. "Agricultural expansion is no longer optional — it is essential and must be backed by active initiatives,' she said. She explained that the museum is intended to be a source of inspiration for future generations and a way for the public to connect with the country's deep agricultural roots. 'We want it to be a window through which the community can appreciate the UAE's agricultural experience,' Al Dahak added. Selection of participants More than 100 Emirati farmers will participate in the exhibition, chosen based on strict criteria such as evaluation of their agricultural production, experience, and use of modern agricultural technologies that improve yield and extend the farming season. Preparatory meetings have been held to coordinate their participation and share successful experiences, as organisers aim to create a competitive and collaborative environment that benefits both farmers and the nation. Another key highlight of the event will be the launch of the UAE Youth Council for Agriculture, in partnership with the Federal Youth Authority. The council will lead developmental agricultural projects and contribute to the sector's innovation and growth. Showcase of innovation Held under the theme 'With agriculture, we thrive and the world thrives,' the exhibition aligns with the UAE's National Food Security Strategy 2051, with full support provided to Emirati farmers. The exhibition will feature the participation of 22 federal and government entities, over 60 private and startup companies, 4 government universities, and more than 1,000 students. Spanning 20,000 square metres and accommodating up to 11,000 people, the four-day exhibition will feature several specialised zones that emphasise inclusivity and innovation. Among the highlights is the 'Farmers' Exhibition,' which showcases local crops, with a particular focus on beekeepers and high-quality Emirati honey. Marketing opportunities for farmers' products will be available in both the local and international markets.

UAE deeply committed to safeguarding its rich biodiversity: Minister of Climate Change and Environment
DUBAI - Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to preserving our natural ecosystems and safeguarding life on land and in water. In a statement on the International Day for Biological Diversity, marked annually on 22nd May, Dr. Al Dahak said that this year's theme, 'From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity,' perfectly captures the urgency of the UAE's mission, noting that the 'General Framework of the National Biodiversity Strategy 2031' reflects this understanding. She added, 'We recognise that protecting biodiversity and championing nature-based solutions are not simply environmental add-ons; they are the essential foundation upon which all our efforts to combat climate change and achieve lasting sustainability must be built.' Dr. Al Dahak emphasised that the UAE is deeply committed to safeguarding its rich biodiversity, embracing it as a cornerstone of its sustainability efforts, reflected in the designation of 49 protected areas, encompassing over 15 percent of the nation's territory, which preserves its desert, mountains, and the marine environment, providing critical habitats for endangered species. 'Our success in bringing the majestic Arabian Oryx back from the brink of extinction stands as a testament to our dedication to wildlife conservation. Furthermore, we are leveraging technology to enhance our conservation strategies, from using drones to combat desertification to pioneering research in marine life preservation," she further said. Beyond our borders, Dr. Al Dahak stated, the UAE champions international collaboration, exemplified by its partnership with Indonesia to launch the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC). 'As part of this alliance, we are also investing in cutting-edge research, as demonstrated by the groundbreaking of the Mohamed bin Zayed-Joko Widodo International Mangrove Research Centre on the island of Bali, in collaboration with the Republic of Indonesia.' 'Here in the UAE, we are actively engaging stakeholders across multiple sectors to boost our local agriculture and safeguard the country's rich biodiversity,' the minister explained, adding that the Emirates Agriculture Conference and Exhibition, taking place from 28th to 31st May, offers an opportunity to turn goals into tangible actions. 'In addition to our focus on supporting farmers and increasing the local production of strategic crops, we will place special emphasis on the development of our livestock and fisheries, key pillars in strengthening both biodiversity and sustainable food security,' she added. 'I invite you to join us at this important event to explore innovative strategies that ensure a better future for both nature and humanity. Let us build a lasting legacy that future generations will be proud to carry forward,' Dr. Al Dahak concluded.
