BU hosts annual 24-hour Drawathon
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Ten BU students were selected to compete in the annual drawathon, where they draw for 24 hours straight, for a good cause. The Drawathon is open to the community. It's being held in Room 358 of the Fine Arts Building on Binghamton University's campus. The competition started at 10 Friday morning and challenges the artists to draw a still-life arrangement using charcoal and large canvases. The drawathon is also collecting non-perishable foods to be donated to Outreach Ministries. Ashley Gibs is a member of the art department's student advisory committee, and says the canvases are setup in a circle, surrounding the still-life display, so each artist sees and creates different perspective. 'Right now, we have a still life setup in the middle of the room as you can see. And depending on where your easel is, that's the different perspective that you have on the same images. So, you can choose to include everything you see, you can choose to include some things. It's completely up to the artists' discretion,' said Gibs. The students take 20-minute breaks here and there, but for the most part, they'll be drawing throughout the night. Judges will select the top three winning pieces. Judging will begin around 9:30 Saturday morning with the people's vote. ACA forced to shut down refugee resettlement program
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local agency has already lost federal funding it used to settle refugees in Greater Binghamton. The American Civic Association has effectively shut down its Refugee Reception and Placement Program. The Trump Administration has paused the federal financial support which had been providing $1,500 per person to cover resettlement costs for the first 90 days after a refugee arrives in our area. ACA Executive Director Hussein Adams says the newcomers are hard workers who contribute more to the community than they take from it. 'Most of the local employers that have received our refugees and who are currently still employed, have had nothing but positive things to say about their work ethic, about their consistency, about their mentality, about what they have brought to the organization, to their business,' said Adams. Adams says the ACA has resettled roughly 100 refugees since the start of 2024, including some at the start of this year. He says his organization plans to use some state funding as well as money from foundations and other private donors to continue to support the people who are already here. Adams says the federal refugee program is currently undergoing a 90-day review by the administration. Meanwhile, President Trump has barred additional asylum-seekers from entering the country. Adams says that forced some refugees to cancel their travel plans to come to Greater Binghamton. Local Black leaders recognized for their excellence
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Several local Black leaders received awards from the state senate to recognize their hard work and celebrate Black History Month. State Senator Lea Webb recognized four people across Senate District 52 with New York State Commendation Awards and the Empire Award. Webb held an award ceremony at her Binghamton office yesterday. The four recipients are Asia Ambler, a mental health site supervisor at BU, Luvelle Brown, the superintendent of Ithaca City Schools, Jesus Clarke, the owner of Big Zues Barbecue, and Tracy Hudson, an Assistant Professor at SUNY Cortland. Ambler says the most rewarding part of her work, is inspiring young people, and being a part of their story. 'And as a young Black woman who's raising a family, who has a young Black son, it is so important in my opinion, to not only give back, but to be those things that maybe it was hard to see when I was younger. And I'm blessed with many other opportunities where young people are making a difference. Where young people hear their voices being heard, they're apart of the change,' said Ambler. Each award winner received a district 52 plaque with their name on it. Webb gives out three commendation awards and the one Empire Award, which recognizes business excellence, went to Big Zues Barbecue. BU maintains commitment to diversity
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Despite President Trump's efforts to ban it, Binghamton University is still full steam ahead with its DEI practices. Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Karen Jones gave a presentation to the BU Council Friday morning. Jones outlined her department's various programs, some new hires and efforts to support the school's recruitment and search process. While Trump has threatened to withhold federal funding from educational institutions that have DEI programs, BU says it hasn't received any directive from the federal government linking the two issues. Meanwhile, Jones says the work continues. 'We are, in fact, a diverse campus community. That we promote diversity in our content and in our programming and experiences. So, the work that we've done for the division, the institution, the collaborations that we have across campus, particularly with our other divisions, that we truly do promote a climate that is supportive of all faculty and staff and students and our external partners,' said Jones. In an executive order issued on January 21, Trump gave the U.S. Attorney General and Secretary of Education 120 days to develop guidance for all state and local educational agencies that receive federal funds. Binghamton University saw a 130 percent increase in the number of alleged bias reports during the 2023-24 school year. Much of that was attributed to disputes over the War in Gaza.
