Liam Lawson at the Miami Grand Prix: what you need to know

Liam Lawson exits the FIA garage during the Sprint/qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Miami. Photo:Miami Grand Prix Starts: 8am Monday 5 May Miami International Autodrome, Florida Live updates on RNZ Sport Formula 1 has moved stateside for the first time this season, with this weekend's action taking place in Miami. Liam Lawson is yet to score a point in 2025, and with the Red Bull replacement saga now a month in the past, now is as good a time as any to make a statement in the Driver's Championship. Elsewhere, Max Verstappen has had even more reason to celebrate after becoming a father earlier in the week. The Red Bull driver has claimed pole position after fending off an outstanding effort by Kimi Antonelli. The 18-year-old Mercedes driver finished pole in the sprint race and will start third in the main race behind Verstappen and McLaren's Lando Norris, with Norris' teammate Oscar Piastri slipping back to fourth on the grid. Piastri has a nine point lead over Norris in the overall standings, with Verstappen 19 points back. After a promising practice, things were looking great for Lawson when he finished eighth in the sprint race, which earned him his first point of the season. However, his old mates the stewards handed Lawson a five-second time penalty for colliding with Fernando Alonso. The incident caused Alonso's Aston Martin to spin out, so the penalty dropped Lawson to 13th in the final classification. Then an underwhelming qualification saw Lawson line up in 15th overall, which is about exactly where you'd think he'd be after this season's results of a DNF, 12th, 17th, 16th and 12th. Liam Lawson driving the (30) Visa Cash App Racing Bulls VCARB 02. Photo:Starting to sound like a broken record but it's pretty much all about getting in the points yet again. Lawson is now literally one of the 'also-rans' in every Grand Prix and unless he can start overtaking people, he's in the same category as the likes of Nico Hulkenberg and Lance Stroll. One thing his mechanics can have a look at is his batteries, which were a major source of frustration during qualifying. "We were dropping power through the run, just trying to fight it and fix it," Lawson said after coming in 15th. "I don't know what the issue is, but it is frustrating, and we made a good step with the car balance, so it is a shame the issue cost us." Yuki Tsunoda Photo: photosport While Lawson was stung with a penalty in the sprint race, he wasn't alone. Yuki Tsunoda was promoted from ninth to sixth after Alex Albon and Oliver Bearman were stung too, which was a good start to the weekend for the Japanese Red Bull driver. He then qualified in 10th, one ahead of Lawson's team mate Hadjar. Speculation still abounds regarding just which car either man will be driving by the end of the season. The battle between Verstappen, Antonelli and the McLaren drivers will be the obvious focus in this one. Verstappen is after his third win in Miami in four years, meanwhile it's not been a great day for Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. He was bounced out of the second qualifying session after a good sprint race, dropping down to 12th and with a lot of work to do to make something out of this race. His teammate Charles Leclerc is starting eighth. Hamilton this week described it as "bottom of my list" of preferred circuits, and Verstappen has claimed that one part of the track would be better to race in go-karts. However, the track has been re-laid recently, which may improve things. 1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull), 2. Lando Norris (McLaren), 3. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), 4. Oscar Piastri (McLaren), 5. F1 team ask Sebastian Vettel to make shock return to the sport three years after retirement

A top Formula One team has asked motorsports legend Sebastian Vettel to make a spectacular return to the sport. Having won four Driver's Championship titles and an incredible 53 races throughout his career, F1 legend Vettel decided to retire three years ago at the end of the 2022 season. Since then, the German has taken a step away from motorsports, instead choosing to spend most of his time focusing on campaigning about environmental issues. However, Vettel has been offered a massive chance to return to Formula One in the near future, as one of the top F1 teams has offered him a huge role. Ever since Red Bull entered F1 back in 2005, Helmut Marko has held one of the most senior positions at the team, including running the team's junior program that brought through talents like Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo. However, at the age of 81, it's likely that the Austrian's time in Formula One will come to an end in the near future, and he thinks that Vettel would be the perfect man to replace him at Red Bull. 'I think he would be the ideal successor candidate,' Marko told Sky Germany. 'It is clear that at some point you can no longer do it, not least because of your age. Because those travel efforts are no small thing. 'Of course, it would be great if a guy like Sebastian could take over. You have the side of the junior program, he's already working with girls here in the go-karts in Saudi Arabia. On the other side, of course, there's the great strategic leadership of his Formula 1 team.' Marko also shooed off any concerns that Vettel may take some time to get up to speed with the demands of being the head of Red Bull's driver development programme, and insisted that it's the job that Vettel would want to do. 'I don't think he needs a year,' Marko added. 'That's two races and then he has it under control. But this is a new approach and I think Sebastian has found himself now." 'He knows what he wants to do in the future and that is first and foremost motor racing.

F1 Australian Grand Prix 2025 preview: season-opener will reveal team strengths

The first of the 2025 F1 Grand Prix schedule's 24 races is in Melbourne, Australia, this weekend. The Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Australian Grand Prix 2025 will run for three days from March 14 to 16, Australia time. There's a 15-hour time difference between Melbourne and New York, so the first race event, Practice 1, begins on March 13. Juggling time zones may be a hassle, especially if you want to watch the lead-up events, but the excitement is building for this season with at least four of the ten teams in serious contention for the Championship. See below for the event schedule and how to watch the Grand Prix events live. During 2025's pre-season testing in Bahrain in late February, McLaren appeared to have the fastest car, and Lando Norris is the favorite to win the Australian Grand Prix. This expectation may surprise F1 fans who expect Red Bull's Max Verstappen to continue to win on his way to his fifth Driver's Championship. Verstappen dominated the 2023 season, winning 21 of 22 races. Verstappen won his third consecutive Driver's Championship, and Red Bull scored its second Constructors' Championship in a row. But that was in 2023. The first half of the 2024 schedule looked like a repeat of 2023, but then Red Bull's cars lost their competitive edge. In the end, Verstappen scored his fourth F1 crown, beating his closest competitor, McLaren's Lando Norris, with enough points to clinch the title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix with two races still on the calendar. However, McLaren won the Constructors' Championship in 2024, with Ferrari in second place and Red Bull in third. McLaren and Red Bull aren't the only teams to watch. Ferrari and Mercedes also did very well during testing. Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion looking for his eighth title, will race for the first time for Ferrari after leaving Mercedes after 12 seasons. Also, keep in mind that eight of this year's teams have new drivers, and six of the 2025 F1 drivers are rookies. New Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli is expected to be very fast in his F1 debut. Weather often plays a dramatic role in F1 races, where cars can exceed 200 mph. It was unexpectedly cold in Bahrain during testing, but it's predicted to be hot with rain in Melbourne, factors that could significantly affect the race outcome. If you plan to watch the Australian Grand Prix live, the time zone difference may be challenging. Melbourne is 15 hours ahead of New York City. The schedule for the weekend's events in the table below is listed using New York time. Please don't make the mistake of waiting for Sunday to check the starting time, because it's Saturday midnight. Event Day Time Practice 1 Thursday, March 13 9:30 to 10:30 P.M. Practice 2 Friday, March 14 1:00 to 2:00 A.M. Practice 3 Friday, March 14 9:30 to 10:30 P.M. Qualifying Saturday, March 15 1:00 to 2:00 A.M. Grand Prix Race Sunday, March 16 12:00 A.M. (Saturday midnight) The race will be broadcast live on ESPN. With a subscription to F1TV, you can stream all of the F1 events live, including expert commentary before and after the race, as well as archived content for past Grand Prix races.
