Lenoir County marks first DARE class graduation of 2025

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — After more than 15 years, the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office announced the first Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) graduation Class of 2025. Students from Southwood Elementary School completed a 10-week program and were awarded certificates of completion Friday, May 2, 2025, by Principal Wendy Piro, LCSO Maj. Larry Greene, Sgt. Josh Garner, and Deputy Breanna McWilliams. The DARE program is now known as 'Keepin` it Real.' It focuses on students learning about drug prevention, decision-making and leadership skills. Six out of the nine Lenoir County Elementary Schools are currently enrolled in this program.'The students focused on not only how to say no to drugs but also building their self-confidence,' Southwood Elementary School Principal, Wendy Piro said. 'She talked about one of things was helping our students say no to vapes and I know from being at the middle school that is a huge issue our students now face. So, equipping our fifth-grade students with those skills as they go to middle school is very helpful.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Mark Zuckerberg prefers to 'rawdog' reality

Mark Zuckerberg seems pretty strict about what he puts in his body. The billionaire Meta CEO said he isn't a fan of caffeine, or any other mind-altering substance for that matter, during an interview on comedian Theo Von's "This Past Weekend" podcast. Instead, he prefers to experience life as it is without the help of "chemicals," Zuckerberg told Von. His sister, he said, calls him out regularly for "rawdogging reality." Zuckerberg told Von that he doesn't do drugs and typically only drinks coffee recreationally — on vacation, for example. Instead, Zuck jumpstarts his mornings by fighting, which works "better than caffeine," according to him. He spends two hours in the morning practicing mixed martial arts to "recenter" himself and deal with his duties as the head of one of the largest companies in the world. While his tech peers, including Elon Musk and Bill Gates, have gone on the record about using cannabis, acid, or ketamine, Zuckerberg's substances of choice include creatine and vitamins. He abstains from drugs, which Von said is edgier than using them these days. When Von asked about drug use, Zuckerberg said his upbringing steered him away. He credited Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) — an anti-drug program prominent in the 1980s and 1990s — for shaping his view of controlled substances. "DARE really worked on me when I was in third grade," Zuckerberg said. "It really scared me."

Man injured after shooting near Washington County elementary school sends students inside

A man was injured after a shooting near an elementary school in Washington County on Monday. Authorities said students were on the playground at John F. Kennedy Catholic School in Washington around noon when shots rang out across the street. Police said the shooting happened while deputies with the Washington County Sheriff's Department were at the school with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program. When they heard the gunfire, they got the kids to safety. "The sheriff's office actually had officers right here in the area, so they were here right away," Detective John Hritz with the Washington Police Department said. When law enforcement heard the shots, officials said the deputies ushered the students inside, moved students away from windows, and secured the building. They then responded to the scene, where they found a man who had been shot. "It seems like everything happened outside here, right on the street on the sidewalk," Hritz said. While the victim was being rushed to a local hospital, detectives got to work to try and piece together what happened. They interviewed witnesses, looked for surveillance footage in the area and collected evidence. "To have a shooting in the middle of the daylight in the middle of a neighborhood here is obviously out of the ordinary," Hritz said. When the city's mayor heard about the shooting and how close it was to the school, he rushed to the scene. While he condemned the shooter, he praised school officials and law enforcement for their quick action. "The school and the sheriff's office, with the way they worked to make sure the kids were safe, I've already got calls from residents saying they commend them for getting the kids off the playground, back into the school and making sure they were safe. I want all those parents of those students to know the staff and the sheriff's office did a phenomenal job taking care of your kids to make sure they weren't part of another scene," Mayor JoJo Burgess said. Police are asking anyone who has a surveillance video from their home to please reach out to police. It was not immediately known if police had a suspect.

You star Anna Camp's life from famous ex husband to losing role to Hollywood icon

You season 5 landed on Netflix this week and fans are already eager to learn more about actress Anna Camp, who plays Raegan and Maddie Lockwood in the psychological thriller. WARNING: This article contains spoilers from You. Anna Camp has become the talk of the town among You fans as she makes her first appearance in the psychological thriller's fifth and final season on Netflix. ‌ You season five dropped on the streaming giant on Thursday, April 24, bringing the drama back to its roots in New York where viewers meet Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley). Three years have passed since his stint in London and he's now hitched to CEO of Lockwood Corporation, Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie) who begins facing her own set of problems courtesy of her half-sister Raegan Lockwood (Anna Camp). She is hell-bent on usurping Kate at any cost, while her twin sister Maddie (Anna Camp) is a socialite who feels she has been living in Raegan's shadow for far too long. With You season five now available for binge-watching on Netflix, fans are keen to learn everything they can about actress Anna Camp, the talent behind Raegan and Maddie Lockwood. ‌ Early life Camp was born and raised in Aiken, South Carolina, where she lived with her mum Dee, a Democratic Party volunteer, her dad Thomas, a bank executive, and older sister Saluda. She reportedly landed a role in a Drug Abuse Resistance Education video while still in school, marking her first foray into acting. ‌ The star later attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts before making the big move to New York to kickstart her career. The Office One of the earliest roles for the 42 year old was in the legendary sitcom The Office, which starred big names like Steve Carrell, John Krasinski and Mindy Kaling. She joined the cast during the sixth season, which aired in 2009, portraying Pam Beesly's (Jenna Fischer) sister Penny Beesly in the episodes Niagara Part One and Two - where Pam and Jim (John Krasinski) tie the knot. ‌ Penny, serving as Pam's maid of honour, mistakenly identifies Kevin (Brian Baumgartner) as Gil (Tom W Chick), Oscar's (Oscar Nunez) partner, leading to an awkward apology after offending him. True Blood After finishing her studies, Camp secured an audition for HBO's True Blood, aiming for the lead role of Sookie, famously played by actress Anna Paquin. She revealed to Collider: "I was straight out of college with like no credits. ‌ "And then in the hallway [during the audition process], Anna Paquin and I pass each other and I was like, 'Oh! Well she's gonna get it! She has an Oscar!' "You know what I mean? Come on! But it was so nice to have that audition go well and then have Alan Ball offer me the part of Sarah Newlin for the second season so that was pretty cool that that worked out that way." ‌ Camp became a part of the second season of True Blood as recurring villain and Steve Newlin's (Michael McMillian) former wife Sarah, who remained a key character until the seventh and final season. Famous ex-husbands Camp has been married to a couple of famous actors, the first being Michael Mosley of Scrubs and Criminal Minds fame in 2010, but they went separate ways after three years. ‌ Fast forward and she found love again with Pitch Perfect co-star Skylar Astin, but alas, marriage round two also ended in just three years when Camp cited "irreconcilable differences" in her divorce papers. Pitch Perfect Speaking of Pitch Perfect, there has been rumours circulating that a possible fourth film is in the works. While Anna Camp, known for her role as Aubrey, isn't too sure if a reunion is on the cards, she's got some thoughts on where her character would be now, eight whole years since the Bellas' last performance. ‌ She told Screen Rant: "I don't think [Pitch Perfect 4] is in development unfortunately, but if we did get a four, I mean at the end of three, I was a doula. "I was wanting to become a doula. I don't know if anybody remembered that. ‌ "So I would like to see what Aubrey, if she's really delivering children into the world and singing Acapella to them as they come out of their mother's bodies, you can print that. "And I hope that the writers see it and that we make it. And that is all I have to say on that." However, Rebel Wilson, who plays the iconic Fat Amy, hinted at a potential sequel during her show 'An Evening With Rebel Wilson' in April 2024. She excitedly shared: "I would love Pitch Perfect [4] to be made. I believe they have a script in development." While it's not set in stone, Wilson's comments suggest that the Barden Bellas might just be tuning up for another round.
