Ladakh's school featured in ‘3 Idiots' flick gets CBSE affiliation after a 24-year long wait

A school nestled in the cold desert of Ladakh, famously known as 'Rancho's School' from the Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots — Druk Padma Karpo School — has secured CBSE affiliation, a wait spanning over two decades. The school had been trying to get the clearance since before Ladakh became a Union Territory in 2019. Even after the bifurcation, several schools in the region, including Druk Padma Karpo, continued to be affiliated with the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKBOSE). According to an earlier report dating back to 2023, the school received the long-pending No Objection Certificate (NOC) from JKBOSE after several failed attempts. However, completing the affiliation process with CBSE still took additional time. 'Though we had the required infrastructure, excellent results, and innovative teaching methods, we didn't get the NOC despite trying for several years,' school principal Mingur Angmo said. Under CBSE norms, schools need a 'no objection certificate' from the state board to apply for affiliation, and foreign schools require similar documents from Indian embassies or consulates. Moving beyond traditional learning Established 24 years ago, Druk Padma Karpo School is named after Mipham Pema Karpo (1527–1592), a revered scholar. 'Padma Karpo' means 'White Lotus' in Bothi, the local language. The school combines traditional Ladakhi architectural elements with modern facilities, maintaining a sustainable model suited for the harsh desert climate. Druk Padma Karpo School was ahead of its time in promoting creative and activity-based learning methods — much before the New Education Policy (NEP) pushed for similar reforms. 'With CBSE also reforming its pedagogy after the NEP, it will now be easier for us to blend our play-way methods with the structured curriculum,' Angmo said. The school, which currently offers education up to class 10, plans to expand till class 12 by 2028. Infrastructure expansion is underway, and special training sessions are being conducted for teachers to ease the transition to the CBSE pattern. Earlier, Angmo had highlighted that besides regular subjects like English, Hindi, and Sciences, the school also trained students in life skills, leadership, and problem-solving through various co-curricular activities. The 'Iconic Idiotic Wall' The school rose to national fame after being featured in 3 Idiots — particularly its 'iconic idiotic wall', shown in the film's memorable closing scene. Even today, the wall remains a popular tourist attraction, although it was relocated within the campus in 2018 to prevent disruption to students. 'Now the two areas are separate, so students are not disturbed by tourists. But sometimes, if an educational activity like mock elections is happening, we let tourists observe,' Angmo said. The wall, part of a structure damaged during the devastating 2010 flash floods, was rebuilt using traditional Ladakhi wooden structures in place of the original CBSE Affiliation Means for Students Principal Angmo believes that the CBSE affiliation will open new doors for students, both within India and abroad. 'Transitioning to higher education will now be smoother for our students. We hope to set an example of how traditional learning methods can blend with modern, structured education systems,' she added.

'3 Idiots' Fame Ladakh School Gets CBSE Affiliation Over Two Decades After Its Inception

Druk Padma Karpo School, nestled in the cold desert of Ladakh and popularly known as "Rancho's school", has finally got CBSE affiliation more than two decades after it was founded. The affiliation was granted after several delays and rejections. The school, which shot to fame after it featured in the Aamir Khan-starrer movie "3 Idiots" in 2009, was so far affiliated with the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKBOSE). Known for its innovative methods of teaching much before the new National Education Policy (NEP) proposed reforms to move away from traditional "rot learning", the school is now planning to expand till class 12. "We have finally got the CBSE affiliation after delay of several years and our first batch of class 10 students is now waiting for their CBSE board exam results. "Though we had all the required infrastructure in place, excellent result record and focus on innovative ways of teaching and learning, we didn't get the NOC from the JKBOSE despite several attempts all these years," school principal Mingur Angmo told PTI. As per the affiliation norms of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), schools require a 'no objection certificate' from the respective state board. The foreign schools require a similar document from the embassy concerned or the Consulate of India in the country concerned. The school has been trying to get the clearance since even before Ladakh acquired the Union Territory status. "The infrastructure is already being expanded and we plan to start class 11 and 12 by 2028. We are conducting some training for our teachers to facilitate a smooth transition for students to the CBSE curriculum. Our methods of teaching were different from traditional classroom teaching and with the CBSE also reforming its pedagogy after the NEP, it will be easier for us to blend both," Angmo explained. Even after the bifurcation, several schools in Ladakh continue to be affiliated to the Jammu and Kashmir board. A committee had also proposed establishment of a new territorial board in Ladakh with an aim to fulfil the "realistic needs of the students as per the natural conditions of the region". The 24-year-old school is named after Mipham Pema Karpo (1527-1592), who is revered as a great scholar, while Padma Karpo means 'White Lotus' in Bothi, the local language. The school is now flocked by tourists, making it a 'must go' point on the itinerary. A wall of the school's building featured in the closing scene of the Bollywood film in which one of the characters, Chatur, tries to urinate but gets an electric shock as two kids throw at him a light bulb connected with wire from the first floor's window. While the 'iconic idiotic wall' - part of a building which was damaged in the 2010 flash floods - still remains on campus, the first floor, earlier made of bricks, has been replaced with wooden structures typically used in Ladakh. The school decided in 2018 to relocate the 'Rancho's wall' to ensure students don't get distracted due to inflow of tourists. "Now the two areas are separate, the students do not get disturbed by the tourists. However, at times tourists get to attend some activities ongoing at the school. Like yesterday, we had conducted mock elections with the election commission here. The activity was done to give students a first-hand experience of the democratic process right from voting to the forming of a government. "So, if there is such an activity going on, we sometimes allow visitors to attend or see," Angmo explained. "With CBSE affiliation, the transition for higher education in the country and abroad will be easier for our students and we can set an example of blending traditional classroom learning with innovative and play-way methods of teaching," she added. 'Rancho's School' gets CBSE nod: Famous '3 Idiots' Ladakh school gets affiliated after 20 years

Druk Padma Karpo School NEW DELHI: Druk Padma Karpo School , famously known as "Rancho's School" from the film 3 Idiots, has finally secured CBSE affiliation more than 20 years after it was established. Located in Ladakh's cold desert region, the school had been pursuing the clearance even before Ladakh became a Union Territory. The school, which featured memorably in 3 Idiots in 2009, faced multiple delays and rejections over the years. It was previously affiliated with the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE). "We have finally got the CBSE affiliation after delay of several years and our first batch of class 10 students is now waiting for their CBSE board exam results," school principal Mingur Angmo told PTI. Despite having strong infrastructure, excellent academic records, the school struggled to obtain the required No Objection Certificate (NOC) from JKBOSE for many years. "Though we had all the required infrastructure in place, excellent result record and focus on innovative ways of teaching and learning, we didn't get the NOC from the JKBOSE despite several attempts all these years," Angmo said. According to CBSE rules, schools must get an NOC from their state board to apply for affiliation. International schools must get similar documents from their embassy or Indian Consulate. Now that CBSE affiliation is in hand, the school plans to extend classes up to Year 12 by 2028. "The infrastructure is already being expanded and we plan to start class 11 and 12 by 2028. We are conducting some training for our teachers to facilitate a smooth transition for students to the CBSE curriculum. Our methods of teaching were different from traditional classroom teaching and with the CBSE also reforming its pedagogy after the NEP, it will be easier for us to blend both," Angmo said. Recognised for its progressive teaching approach well before the National Education Policy (NEP) suggested reforms against traditional "rot learning", Druk Padma Karpo School has earned praise across India. The institution was founded 24 years ago and named after Mipham Pema Karpo (1527-1592), a renowned scholar. 'Padma Karpo' translates to 'White Lotus' in Bothi language. The school is also a popular tourist destination, due to its link with 3 Idiots. A wall at the school became famous in the film's closing scene, where a character, Chatur, receives a shock while attempting to urinate on it. In 2018, the school decided to relocate the 'Rancho's Wall' slightly, ensuring that students could focus on their studies without being disturbed by the many visitors. Post-bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir, many schools in Ladakh continue to remain under JKBOSE. A special committee had suggested setting up a separate territorial board to better suit the environmental and educational needs of Ladakh's students. With CBSE affiliation now achieved, Druk Padma Karpo School looks forward to smoother transitions for its students into higher education. "With CBSE affiliation, the transition for higher education in the country and abroad will be easier for our students and we can set an example of blending traditional classroom learning with innovative and play-way methods of teaching," Angmo added.
