Chicago weather: Temps soar well into the 80s by midweek
CHICAGO - It was a busy Sunday afternoon with severe storms in parts of Chicagoland. During the early to midafternoon hours, a severe storm tracked through DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, and Cook counties. The hardest hit area was Batavia in Kane County, where the storm produced 70 mph wind gusts and ping pong ball-sized hail. A cold front is moving through the region this evening, and clearing skies are expected behind the frontal boundary. Temperatures will drop into the mid 50s tonight under mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. Monday will be pleasant, but a few showers and storms will once again be possible. While severe weather isn't expected, storms will be capable of heavy rain and gusty winds. High temperatures will be in the lower 70s. Tuesday and Wednesday look great with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures. Tuesday will be in the upper 70s and then we're in the upper 80s on Wednesday. Scattered showers and storms return Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with temperatures in the mid 80s on Thursday, then dropping to the mid to upper 70s Friday through the weekend.

DuPage state's attorney launches new Animal Protection Unit
The DuPage County state's attorney's office is launching a new Animal Protection Unit, officials announced. Comprised of a team of specially trained prosecutors, it will be focused on enhancing prosecutions of crimes committed against animals. 'This issue has been a priority for me for a long time,' State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. 'I'm grateful that we have the resources to implement a unit like this because I just think it's so good for our community and our county.' His office has seen an increase in animal cruelty cases, owner neglect cases and in the number of petitions it has had to file in civil court seeking forfeiture of animals because of cruelty or neglect, he said. As of Friday, about 35 cases concerning animal cruelty, violations of the Illinois Animal Control Act or animal endangerment were pending. 'Rather than have these cases spread out amongst different prosecutors, because they're so important … in the community, I thought that we should have a specialized unit made up of a small group of prosecutors who are trained in these cases (and) have a specialty (so) they can really handle them from start to finish,' Berlin said. The unit will partner with law enforcement agencies and DuPage County Animal Services — as well as the community — to provide a comprehensive, focused approach to prosecuting local animal cruelty cases, according to the state's attorney's office. Further, the unit will also provide additional legal protections for those at risk of domestic violence, which can be linked to animal abuse, a news release on the new team said. A few years ago, the Urban Resource Institute and the National Domestic Violence Hotline conducted a survey of nearly 2,500 people focused on how domestic violence affects survivors with pets and their families. Among respondents, 37% said their abuser had threatened to harm or kill a pet and 29% said the abuser had actually harmed or killed pets, per a 2021 report of survey results. Just last week, a Naperville man was sentenced to prison after beating his family's dog to death following an argument with his partner. Alongside prosecution, the new Animal Protection Unit will engage in public outreach and education efforts to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership, animal welfare laws and available resources for those who need help with animal care, per the state's attorney's office. Berlin said he's hoping the unit will be able to participate in school education programs as well as train police and animal control officers across the county so local authorities are also better equipped to handle these kinds of cases. Training would include what to look for, information on animal cruelty laws, investigative techniques and appropriate handling of animals during seizures, he said. 'Hopefully, by prosecuting defendants for these crimes (and) holding them accountable, we're going to do two things: we're going to remove violent offenders from the street, and we're going to deter others from doing the same thing,' Berlin said. 'And that makes the community safer. 'Just like children and just like seniors, our animals are some of our most vulnerable victims. They can't speak for themselves. We have to speak for them.' tkenny@

Mosquitoes in 2 Illinois counties test positive for West Nile virus
The DuPage County and McHenry County health departments confirmed that mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus for the first time this year. The mosquitoes tested in McHenry County for the virus were found in Lake in the Hills. DuPage County health officials tested mosquitoes from Roselle, Medinah, Clarendon Hills, and Burr Ridge in May. While the mosquitoes tested positive in both counties, no human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in either county. What is West Nile Virus? West Nile virus is spread to people from infected mosquitoes, most commonly in the summer. Eight out of 10 people infected do not develop symptoms, according to the CDC. The CDC said about 1 in 150 people who are infected with the virus develop a severe illness. High fever, headache, stiff neck, disorientation, and vision loss are among the symptoms. You can protect yourself by wearing light-colored, long-sleeved shirts, socks, and pants and using insect repellents. The health departments recommend getting rid of standing water around houses to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites.

Chicago man found guilty of shooting pregnant woman in 2022: prosecutors
The Brief A jury found a Chicago man guilty of shooting a pregnant woman while she was traveling in early 2022. Lawrence Grant, 41 formerly of Chicago, faces a penalty of 31 years to life in prison. The jury found Grant guilty of one count of attempted murder, one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm. WHEATON - A jury found an ex-Chicago man guilty of shooting a pregnant woman while she was traveling in early 2022, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office. Lawrence Grant, 41, faces a penalty of 31 years to life in prison. After a four-day-long trial and approximately two-and-a-half hours of deliberations, the jury found Grant guilty of one count of attempted murder, one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm. Grant appeared in bond court in February 2002, with a bond set at $2 million with 10% to apply. He has been in custody at the DuPage County Jail since then, prosecutors said. The backstory At about 7 p.m. on Jan. 28, 2022, Willowbrook police officers responded to the scene of a crashed vehicle on Route 83 in Willowbrook. When officers arrived, they found a pregnant woman who had been shot in the back. She was transported to the hospital, where the baby was delivered while she was in surgery. Both the baby and the mother survived, prosecutors said. Prior to the crash, Grant, the victim and another person were involved in a verbal altercation that eventually turned physical in a nearby grocery store in the 6300 block of Kingery Highway. After the altercation, all three individuals left the store in different vehicles, prosecutors said. Grant allegedly followed the victim in his vehicle and fired at her, striking the victim and her vehicle, causing the vehicle to crash, the state's attorney's office said. Grant was located at the University of Chicago Hospital at about 10 p.m. that night, where he was admitted "on an unrelated matter," prosecutors said. The vehicle that Grant was allegedly traveling in was found on fire about a block from the hospital. He was taken into custody after he was discharged from the hospital, authorities said. What they're saying "Today, the jury sent a clear message that Mr. Grant's violent actions of shooting a pregnant woman in the back will not be tolerated in DuPage County and that he will be held responsible," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. "I thank Judge Guerin for ensuring that both sides received a fair trial in this case as well as the jury for sending the message that armed violence will not be tolerated in DuPage County." What's next Grant's next court appearance will be June 20. The Source The details for this story are from previous Fox 32 reporting and the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

17-year-old boy arrested in Colorado for Downers Grove armed robbery
Officials in Downers Grove, Illinois, said a 17-year-old boy is in custody after being arrested in Colorado and brought back to face a felony armed robbery charge for an incident in April. Prosecutors say a woman was walking in the 4900-block of Forest Avenue after 8:30 p.m. on April 22 when she was approached by a group of four people. She told police one of them lifted his shirt to show a gun, while another pulled at her purse. Prosecutors said she gave the armed man, who police said they later determined to be the 17-year-old, $110 from her wallet and the group ran away. An investigation by the Downers Grove Police Department led them to the 1-year-old, who was found to be living in Colorado. Prosecutors said he waived extradition and was brought back to DuPage County Friday to face one felony charge of Armed Robbery with a Firearm. The teen appeared in court Monday for a detention hearing and was ordered detained. He is due back in court Thursday.
