Uttarakhand: Two dead, seven missing after cloudburst triggers landslide in Uttarkashi

Two labourers were killed and seven remain missing after a cloudburst triggered a landslide at an under-construction hotel site in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district on Sunday morning, PTI reported. The cloudburst had prompted authorities to suspend the Char Dham Yatra for 24 hours. The order was lifted on Monday. However, officials have been instructed to stop vehicular traffic depending on the weather conditions in their respective districts, Hindustan Times reported. The landslide occurred around 2.12 am on Sunday near the Silai Band area on the Yamunotri National Highway, according to The Indian Express. The highway is a critical route to the Yamunotri temple, one of the four pilgrimage sites of the Char Dham Yatra. The labourers' campsite hit by the landslide housed 29 road construction workers. Their tents were swept away with a sudden surge of rainwater and debris, PTI reported. Twenty workers were rescued, while two bodies were recovered approximately 18 km downstream along the Yamuna riverbanks near Tiladi Shaheed Smaraka. Those who died were identified as 43-year-old Kewal Bisht from Nepal and 55-year-old Duje Lal from Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit district. Of the seven missing persons, four are from Nepal and three from Uttarakhand's Dehradun district. According to Uttarkashi Magistrate Prashant Arya, the landslide originated from a newly formed zone near the campsite, an area previously considered safe. The vehicle was on its way to Badrinath Dham when the accident took place. The pilgrims were on Uttarakhand's Char Dham Yatra and had come from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

UTTARKASHI/DEHRADUN: Bodies of two labourers have been found while seven remain missing after a cloudburst triggered a flash flood that swept through a resort construction site at Silai Bend on the Barkot–Yamunotri highway in Uttarkashi around 2am on Sunday. Twenty labourers managed to escape to safety. The rescue operation was suspended for the night due to poor visibility and risky terrain. The flash flood, caused by intense rainfall, flattened a tin-and-plywood shelter housing 29 workers engaged in hotel and road construction. The Yamunotri highway was damaged at three spots, including a 10–30 metre stretch washed out near the camp. Several belongings of the workers were also swept away. The recovered bodies were identified as Duje Lal, 55, from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh, and Kewal Bisht, 43, from Bardia in Nepal. The two bodies were located nearly 18km downstream along the Yamuna riverbanks. Similarly, the Gangotri national highway was blocked near Netala, Bishanpur, Laldhang, and Naluna, out of which the road strech near Bishanpur was opened after an effort of over two hours, said the district disaster management officials. Meanwhile, more than a dozen families of Chukum village of Ramnagar in Nainital district have shifted to safer places in the wake of floods. Rescue teams are searching for the missing people at a war footing, he said. A part of the national highway was washed out due to the landslide. 'As per our assessment, around 10 metres of the national highway has been washed out. It will take some time for us to restore the traffic movement. The pilgrims undertaking the Char Dham yatra have been stopped at safe locations. Instructions have been issued to ensure availability of essential supplies for them,' he said, adding that the border roads organisation (BRO) and National Highway Authority have been directed to carry out the road restoration work. 'Five JCB machines, Poclain machines have been deployed to restore road connectivity,' he said. 'It is a new landslide zone. It was a safe spot..... No such incident was reported earlier there,' Arya said. He added that additional district magistrate Mukta Mishra and Barkot sub divisional magistratre (SDM) Brijesh Tiwari, were supervising rescue and relief operations. It came days after five people were buried under a landslide near 9 Kaichi Bhairav Temple on the Yamunotri trek route on June 23. Rescuers recovered two bodies from the debris and rescued an injured man on the same day. Two people are still missing. In a review meeting in Dehradun, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed the officials to expedite the search operation for the 'missing' labourers. He said, 'Out of 29 labourers, 20 have been rescued safely. The search operation by NDRF, SDRF and district administration is bodies have been recovered.'
