Dundee Utd learn Conference League draw fate as Jim Goodwin's men handed opener on Euro return
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JIM GOODWIN'S men only returned to the top flight last season - but their fans are already gearing up for a European invasion. And all Dundee Utd supporters have just learned where they should start booking their tickets and travel for after today's second round Conference League qualifying draw. The tiny Luxembourgish side finished 2nd last season in the league - and have a stadium which accommodates just 1500 people. That's surely a winnable tie - with United are a team with a strong European pedigree, even if some of it is in the distant past. They played in the final of the Uefa Cup against IFK Gothenburg of Sweden in 1987. Their most recent involvement came in 2022-23, when Jack Ross's side beat an AZ Alkmaar side studded with future stars 1-0 in the first leg at Tannadice only to go down 7-0 in the return match. It's a time of change at United, who lost top scorer Sam Dalby, while on loan from Wrexham, to Bolton. In has come Aussie forward Zac Sapsford from Western Sydney Wanderers, while towering Moldovan defender Iurie Iovu joins him, despite spending last season in the fourth tier of the Spanish league. Goodwin has also been linked with Ukrainian goalkeeper Yevhen Kucherenko, currently with LNZ Cherkasy. United start their preparations for the season with pre-season games against Brechin and Arbroath before taking on PEC Zwolle at Sportpark Bovenmolen during their Dutch training camp. Shock moment Aberdeen star requires medical treatment after being hit by seat thrown from OWN FANS after pitch invasion
THIS is the shock moment an Aberdeen star required major medical treatment after being struck by a SEAT thrown by one of his own fans. Trouble flared at the end of today's Aberdeen vs Dundee Utd clash at Tannadice when jubilant United fans streamed onto the ground to celebrate the 2-1 win which saw them finish fourth. 2 2 SunSport understands that a seat was thrown by the visiting fans in response but it only succeeded in catching Dons full back Jack MacKenzie on the head. The Scotland fringe man subsequently required major treatment from medical staff on the Tannadice pitch in a shocking incident. It's believed he DIDN'T require hospital treatment but images show him blooded and bruised with a head wound requiring significant taping as he was carted off the field on a stretcher. United trailed early on in clash through Jeppe Okkels' 15th minute opener but they roared back through Declan Gallagher and a Sam Dalby penalty on 63 minutes to secure all three points. There's no love lost between followers of the two sides but questions will be asked after such a serious incident. The match could well be MacKenzie's LAST as a Dons player, with his contract expiring this summer. He's had interest from down south - having previously been on the radar of Preston, Sheffield United and Stoke City. EFL Championship club Plymouth Argyle are interested in a move for the left-back.

Cyriel Dessers reveals Rangers pain behind the pride of half century goal haul that's provided scant reward
Dessers recached the landmark with a spot kick in 3-1 win over Dundee Utd but admits he's falling well short on another front Cyriel Dessers says he's proud of his 50-goal haul for Rangers - but admits it's PAINFUL not to have more trophies to show for it. The Ibrox striker hit the half-century on Wednesday night with a double in Gers' 3-1 win over Dundee United. He's averaging 25 goals a season and is now the Scottish Premiership's top scorer this term. But in two years at the club, Dessers only has one trophy to his name - a League Cup in December 2023. He knows that's not good enough, given his goal return as the club's number nine. But with prospective new American owners taking over at Ibrox in the summer - he's determined to put that right next season. Dessers said: 'It's a very special feeling to score 50 goals in two seasons. 'It makes me very proud to achieve this milestone for a big club like Rangers in the first place. 'To do it at Ibrox, in a game you win, it was obviously a very nice feeling. 'But it's also very painful not to have the trophies to show for it. 'To score 50 goals, you'd hope to have something in your hands as well. 'But this will only give me more fuel for the summer to work hard and go again and never give up. 'You have to say, we've never given up. 'But we know we need to do better and hopefully we can do that next year.' It's rough news for the Portuguese winger, who was spotted celebrating the Hoops title win despite the injury by waving his crutches in the air. The Hoops were already set to be without the star for Sunday's Old Firm clash vs Rangers, but THREE other top team stars skipped training today in the form of Daizen Maeda, Nicolas Kuhn and Alistair Johnston.
