Shanahan's death, major mall addition and Guadalupe Street update top busy week in business news

It was a busy week on the business front in Santa Fe in recent days, with several noteworthy developments taking place. To begin with, there was the death of green-building and affordable-housing advocate Kim Shanahan, who also wrote a popular weekly column for The New Mexican. Shanahan managed to remain one of the more important figures in the Santa Fe homebuilding community even after moving to Costa Rica a few years ago, and to hear his friends and admirers tell it, his death is likely to leave a significant leadership void in that arena. Everyone I spoke with about Shanahan for the story I wrote about his passing expressed respect and admiration for him, making me regret the fact I never got to meet him. The task of resolving Santa Fe's burgeoning affordable-housing crisis likely has become more difficult now with his passing, and the loss of his experience and perspective. On the positive side, there was the news of a large national retailer, Dunham's Sports, taking up residence at Santa Fe Place. The Michigan-based company will open a store occupying nearly 60,000 square feet at the mall later this year and already has been holding hiring events to staff the enterprise. The addition of such a large company helps the city offset the loss of a handful of other national retailers earlier this year. It also comes at a time when there are increasing fears of a national economic slowdown because of the effects of the Trump administration's tariffs, so that makes the entry of Dunham's into the local market doubly important. Finally, there is news that city officials hope to have work on the Guadalupe Street corridor done this summer. That comes as welcome news to anyone who has tried to drive through the area since work on the $11 million project began a year and a half ago and especially to the merchants who are trying to survive the disruptions caused by the undertaking, which city officials have promised will result in a major improvement to the streetscape. With the start of tourist season just weeks away, it seems like every day counts in terms of how soon the work wraps up.

Santa Fe Place mall plans to add sporting goods store by end of year

Santa Fe Place mall is getting a major new tenant, as Dunham's Sports, a large Michigan-based sporting goods company, is expected to open by the end of the year. Mall General Manager Antonio Chavez said the retailer will be moving into the space formerly occupied by Conn's HomePlus, as well as an adjoining space. The two spaces combined will provide Dunham's Sports with nearly 60,000 square feet of space, making it one of the largest mall tenants. 'We're very excited to have Dunham's Sports in Santa Fe,' Chavez said, adding the retailer will give residents another reason to shop locally instead of driving to Albuquerque. 'It's good competition, and it helps the mall to keep growing." According to its website, Dunham's Sports operates more than 250 stores in 25 states and bills itself as the largest sporting goods chain in the Midwest. The company's online store locator does not list any other locations in New Mexico. Attempts to reach company officials were unsuccessful. Dunham's Sports offers a full line of sporting goods as well as apparel, outdoors equipment, electronics, bedding and footwear. It also offers a large selection of firearms. While Santa Fe has lost a handful of national retailers in recent months — including Big Lots, Party City and Joann, as each of those companies downsized significantly or ceased operations — Dunham's Sports will be the second such business the city has attracted in that time. Daiso, a Japanese value retailer that operates 6,000 stores worldwide and 150 in the U.S., opened in the Plaza Santa Fe shopping center on Zafarano Drive in January.

Three arrested after retail fraud, pursuit on I-69, I-94 in St. Clair County

FORT GRATIOT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - Three people have been arraigned on charges originating from a retail fraud and subsequent fleeing incident on interstate highways in St. Clair County. The theft and fleeing incident began about 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Dunham's Sports store at Birchwood Mall in Fort Gratiot Township, according to a report from St. Clair County Sheriff's Office. That's when a call to Central Dispatch related that three suspects had fled the store in a gold 2007 Cadillac Escalade. Shortly after the call, deputies patrolling the area saw the Escalade westbound on Keewahdin Road. The driver stopped in the middle of North Road. As deputies began to exit their vehicles, the driver of the Escalade sped off. The purusit went southbound on North Road to Wadhams Road and then onto eastbound Interstate 69. From there, the vehicle continued onto westbound Interstate 94, exiting the freeway and pulling into the Love's gas station at Washan Road. "Deputies were able to detain all three occupants without incident," the report said. "In the vehicle, they discovered a large number of items with tags on them, as well as a cutting device and a magnetic device commonly used to remove merchandise tags." Those who were arrested and had arraignment hearings Tuesday are: Vince Prince of Redford, charged with felony retail fraud-first degree and felony fleeing police-third degree. Keisha Price of Detroit, charged with felony retail fraud-first degree. Yolanda Price of Detroit, charged with felony retail fraud-first degree.
