Appleton officials consider truancy ordinance to address student absenteeism

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – The Appleton Common Council is considering implementing a truancy ordinance to help enforce state laws requiring students under 18 to attend school. Officials say the move comes as hundreds of students in the Appleton Area School District missed more than 50 days of school last year, increasing their risk of long-term struggles, including poverty. The proposed ordinance aims to provide support rather than punishment, according to district leaders. 'Celebrating Success': 90+ students in the Appleton School District recognized during Dunlap Awards 'We know what outcomes are for kids who don't have the literacy or numeracy skills to be successful as an adult,' said Appleton Area School District Superintendent Greg Hartjes. 'That's the bottom line. That's where the support is. That's where the help is, and so that's what we're looking to do. We aren't trying to be punitive in any way. We just simply want kids to come to school.' If passed, the ordinance would allow officials to issue tickets to students who repeatedly miss school, similar to a speeding ticket. CBD bakery in Wisconsin to permanently close, cites ‘volatile' economy

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WFRV) – A one-of-a-kind bakery in southern Wisconsin announced that it will permanently close its doors in April. Sweetly Baked MKE posted on its Facebook page that it is permanently closing as of April 11. The post said the owner looked into several options and talked to multiple people before finalizing the decision. The 'volatile' economy and being a single parent factored into the decision. The business would reportedly require a significant investment to sustain where it is right now. Green Bay airport prepares for influx of travelers ahead of 2025 NFL Draft Sweetly Baked's website says the business was born out of a passion for baking, managing anxiety and a love for science. The idea reportedly started during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Sweetly Baked thanked everyone who supported them throughout the past three and a half years as well as the business's baking & cafe teams and past employees. Below is part of the post: This journey has been absolutely incredible and I can't find the words to express the level of gratitude I have for everyone who believed in and supported us along the way. It's crushing to give up something I love and built from the ground up. I have met so many amazing people that were so gracious in helping me learn as I grew. I also found an incredible team of people. Sweetly Baked would not be what it is without our baking team: Amanda (not me haha), Rachel, Benji; or our cafe team: Finn, Sadie, Morgan, Aria, and Aaliyah (as well as some of our incredible past employees in the cafe and kitchen: Addie, Lauren, Eva, Savannah, Paige). Thank you to Dave for bringing a great energy (and several puppies) to the cafe and who was integral to developing our dessert pairings. And a special thank you to Chris who developed the brand and logo and was integral in starting this business. And my amazing sister Angela who helped me get off the ground. Thank you so much to everyone who supported us throughout the last three and a half years. I never would have thought my pandemic passion would turn into a CBD Bakery that turned into a regular pop-up bakery with CBD/THC treats, that turned into a food truck, that turned into a cafe I'm looking forward to seeing you all on the other side of the counter now while supporting all of the local events and small businesses that supported us and make Milwaukee the incredible city that I love.
