Three football fans admit brawling with rival supporters in Airdrie pub before Scottish Cup clash
Shocking video footage showed bottles being thrown into the West End Bar as group of Airdrieonians fans confronted St Johnstone supporters and a fight spilled on to the street. Three football fans have admitted brawling with rival supporters in an Airdrie pub before a Scottish Cup clash. Shocking video footage showed bottles being thrown into the West End Bar. The town's sheriff court heard that a group of Airdrie fans confronted St Johnstone supporters and a fight spilled on to the street. Cameron Patey, 22, of School Quadrant, Airdrie; Ryan Lawrence, 29, from Park Street, Airdrie; and Nathan Dunsmore, 26, a prisoner, admitted causing a breach of the peace on January 20 last year. It happened before their team, Airdrieonians, beat the Saints 1-0 in a fourth round tie. Annette Ward, prosecuting, said home fans were seen on CCTV leaving another pub and heading for the West End Bar around 1.15pm. She told the court: "They had their hoods up and their faces partially covered with scarves. The three accused were part of the group. "A large group of St Johnstone fans were already inside the West End Bar. "As soon as the Airdrie supporters arrived there was an altercation that turned into a scuffle between the two groups. "This quickly spilled on to the street and in the course of that an individual was assaulted by two unidentified males." The court heard that a fourth Airdrie fan was seen on CCTV picking up two bottles and throwing them into the pub. He was also charged but has since died. Ms Ward said police secured CCTV footage and after a public appeal for information the accused were traced. Patey has a previous conviction which resulted in him being given a football banning order. Bail conditions in the current case have prevented him and and Lawrence from attending matches. Dunsmore has been held in custody since his arrest. Sheriff Joseph Hughes deferred sentence on all three until next month for background reports and electronic tagging assessments. The sheriff slammed Dunsmore for his demeanour while the CCTV was shown in court. He said: "I witnessed what was, perhaps, an unfortunate response from him. It looked like it was a bit of fun. It concerns me." After the brawl, the bar manager said he was lucky to escape injury after being hit by a bottle as he tried to eject troublemakers. He revealed: "Most of the people in the pub at the time were Tartan Army fans who are friends of mine. I had invited them to come to watch the match." The trouble was linked to a message posted by a St Johnstone fan who tweeted: "Any Airdrie supporters wanting a square go should come to the West End Bar. Bring your mates - you'll need them." *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Sign up to our newsletters here.

Woman uses stolen identities in $330,000 unemployment scheme in California, feds say
A California woman accused of taking part in an 'elaborate' fraud scheme involving stolen identities is headed to prison, federal prosecutors said. Kari Marie Russo, 46, from Oakland, was sentenced to 33 months plus one day behind bars, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California said in a March 31 news release. Russo's attorney declined to comment in an April 1 email to McClatchy News. In a court filing, the attorney said Russo struggled with drug addiction and domestic violence, and she's remorseful and 'has taken significant steps toward rehabilitation' since her arrest. Russo and a co-defendant, Steven Dunsmore, 35, also from Oakland, are accused of using stolen information — such as Social Security numbers, names and birth dates — to make unemployment insurance claims, according to prosecutors. They received more than $336,000, prosecutors said. Their scheme began in June 2020, per the release, and the pair were arrested that November at a casino after Russo used a players card linked to a stolen identity, according to a court filing. Police searched them and their vehicle and found 'multiple identification cards, credit cards, and credit card statements in the names of stolen identities. They also had numerous pieces of (mail from the state unemployment insurance agency) addressed to different names at' an apartment in San Francisco, the court filing said. The one-bedroom unit, rented using a stolen identity, 'was connected to 33 separate unemployment insurance claims,' the filing said. Russo and Dunsmore both pleaded guilty to two counts each of aggravated identity theft and fraudulent use of unauthorized access device, prosecutors said. Russo also pleaded guilty to one count of failure to appear, according to prosecutors. While on pre-trial release, she entered residential drug treatment but then left without permission and skipped a required court date, prosecutors said. Her attorney wrote in a filing that Russo left after she was harassed by someone in the program, and her father died the week of the court appearance. Dunsmore was sentenced in June 2024 to 24 months plus one day behind bars, prosecutors said. Both he and Russo were ordered to pay restitution totaling $336,545. McClatchy News reached out to Dunsmore's attorney April 1 and was awaiting a response.
