Check dams, causeway across Kaundinya river in Vellore inaugurated
Minister for Water Resources Duraimurugan inaugurated two check dams and a causeway with vents across Kaundinya river in Gudiyatham to prevent flooding during monsoon, and provide access to key towns. The Minister was accompanied by Collector V.R. Subbulaxmi, and senior officials of the Water Resources Department (WRD). 'The check dams will help irrigate at least 560 hectares of farmlands in the region. Moreover, local bodies can sink borewells along the facilities to draw water for consumption,' S. Kalipriyarn, Assistant Engineer, WRD (Gudiyatham), told The Hindu. Funded by NABARD under the Permanent Floods Restoration Scheme 2023-24, the check dams were built at a cost of ₹25 crore. Each 120-metre-long and 1.2-metre-tall facility has a capacity of 2.51 mcft (million cubic feet) and can discharge 53,000 cusecs of floodwater. They will help recharge at least 530 farmwells in the region. Around 10-12 farming villages will benefit as groundwater within a three-km radius from the facilities would increase. After a long struggle, residents in Gudiyatham and adjoining farming villages now have a causeway, built at a cost of ₹8.41 crore using funds from NABARD. It connects Thalayatham with Sunnabupettai village across the river. The causeway measures 104.2 metres in length and 2.7 metres in height (from the riverbed) with 10 vents. It can discharge 58,000 cusecs per minute of floodwater during monsoon. Officials said such high discharge of rainwater would prevent the facility from being flooded. 'Earlier, we had to take a detour of at least 20 km to reach Gudiyatham, Pernambut, and Pallikonda towns. School vans and ambulances had to navigate a long sandy route. The new bridge has ended our ordeal,' S. Pechiammal, a resident, said. A 500-metre-long tiled walking track was also inaugurated. It was built at a cost of ₹2.91 crore on the left bund of the river. Steel fencing has been erected to prevent accidents, officials say.

DMK gen secy Duraimurugan alloted law ministry in reshuffle
In yet another portfolio change in Tamil Nadu, minister for water resources and DMK general secretary Duraimurugan was allotted the law ministry on Thursday. S Regupathy who was law minister has been designated as minister for natural resources with the portfolios of minerals and mines, the Raj Bhavan said in a statement. Duraimurugan is the second in the pecking order after chief minister M K Stalin in the cabinet as well as in the party. This move comes after controversial ministers and senior DMK leaders Senthil Balaji and K Ponmudi resigned from the TN cabinet on April 27. Balaji resigned days after the Supreme Court on April 24 asked him to choose between his post and freedom and a day before his next hearing. Balaji, was released on bail by the Supreme Court in a case filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on September 26, 2024, after he spent 15 months in prison. He was re-inducted into the cabinet just three days later, and given back his portfolios of Electricity and Excise. The top court has now closed the plea to cancel his bail. Ponmudi, was pulled up by the Madras high court over his vulgar joke on women, Shaivism and Vaishnavism. Ponmudy, was recently removed as deputy secretary of the DMK after his speech on April 6 created the controversy following which the Madras HC has initiated a sup moto case against him. Stalin went with a minor reshuffle of his cabinet by allocating Balaji's heavyweight portfolios of Electricity, and Excise and Prohibition to Transport Minister S S Sivasankar and Housing Minister S Muthusamy respectively. Ponmudy's Forest ministry has been allocated to Khadi Minister R S Rajakannappan as an additional charge. Stalin also brought back T Mano Thangaraj, who was dropped from the cabinet in September 2024. He been given the portfolios of milk and dairy development.

Madras HC directs special court to frame charges against Min Duraimurugan in disproportionate wealth case
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Thursday reversed a local court order discharging senior in a disproportionate wealth case, and directed a special court to frame charges against him and his wife. This was the second case in two days involving Duraimurugan where the HC had given a similar order. On Wednesday, Justice P Velmurugan had directed a special court in Vellore district to frame charges in accordance with law against the DMK General Secretary and his family members in a disproportionate wealth case with a different check period (1996-2001). On Thursday, he directed a special court in Vellore to frame charges against Duraimurugan and his wife in a case relating to amassing wealth to the tune of Rs 1.40 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income during the check period 2007-09. Durai Murugan held the Public Works Department portfolio in the 2006-11 DMK government. The case was filed in 2011 by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) and the couple was discharged in 2017 by a special court in Vellore. DVAC had challenged it before the HC. The judge directed the special court to dispose of the case within six months by conducting the trial on a day-to-day basis.
