Binge watching the 031 'series'
A proudly single woman; a man questioning his decision to emigrate; the grand old dame of musical theatre; a man living with ADHD, a happily married couple, and a bunch of savvy kids rocking improv – these are some of the characters one can meet at the family-friendly 031 Theatre Festival at the Seabrookes Theatre at DHS next weekend 'It is such a great fest,' said singer and actress Lisa Bobbert, 'It means all of us who are travelling to the Eastern Cape have an opportunity to perform in-front of a live audience. It also means that Durbanites who won't make it to the festival can have a tiny sampling of some of the best shows Durban has to offer. Drama is in short supply at the moment – so it is worth binging-watching some great pieces neatly packaged into one weekend. Think of it as watching a Netflix series over a weekend – only live.' Bobbert presents Ethel (June 7 at 2pm; June 8 at 4pm), her latest one-woman cabaret tribute to the queen of musical theatre – the incomparable Ethel Merman, whose voice defined Broadway. 'The show is based on the life and body of work of the incredible Ethel Merman – grand doyenne of musical theatre, both on stage and in Hollywood. So many amazing composers wrote for her and she was the muse for some great musical shows written especially for her: Gyspy, Call me Madam, Annie get your Gun and Hello Dolly. I have grown to love Ethel – she was not a classic beauty; in fact she reminds me of everyone's favourite aunt. But she has a great voice which belts out the numbers. She was an extraordinary talent, she didn't suffer fools and had a great sense of humour. She intrigues and inspires me. Besides, I love doing the old-fashioned stuff.' said Bobbert. This year, the festival welcomes acclaimed Cape Town actress, Erika Breytenbach with her one-woman show I Can Buy Myself Flowers (June 6 at 6pm; June 7 at 4pm). Taking its name from Miley Cyrus' song that became an anthem for single women the world over, it tells the story ofan estate agent in her fifties, who entertains as she reflects on the ups and downs of relationships, children, professional life and her women friendships. Following phenomenal success at the Adelaide International Festival in Australia, Ben Voss will tour Becoming Benno (June 6 at 8pm; June 7 at 6pm) on his home ground. In this internationally acclaimed heartfelt comedy, Voss is detained by border officials at Sydney Airport due to an issue with his permanent residency visa. Will he be admitted or sent back to SA? Rewind to the nineties, when a group of Durban drama graduates, inspired by the BBC TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway? created the hit theatre improv show, Comedy Games (June 7 at 8pm), which quickly developed a cult following and became the thing to do on a Friday evening. Now the original theatre show starring Patrick Kenny as MC is back with a hot new team of fine young actors. Join Aaron McIlroy as he revisits one of his favourite one-man shows - ADHD (June 8 at 2pm). Facts and theories are turned on their heads as we get a bird's eye view into the chaotic and beautiful mind of Aaron McIlroy, who has lived with this 'gift' for the last half century. The 031 Theatre Festival ends on a high note with the hilarious musical comedy, Date Night, starring McIlroy and Bobbert on Sunday, June 8 at 6pm. Tickets from webtickets

Weather: Sunny reprieve across SA before winter arrives
There is some warm and sunny weather expected around South Africa for at least a couple more weeks. Image: Canva The winter weather months of June and July are looming on the horizon, and some residents in SA will need to begin stocking up on some extra blankets or umbrellas, but the good news is that there doesn't seem to be an immediate rush for that. Of course, it's generally those in the Western Cape areas who begin to look warily at weather forecasts at this time of year, but there does still seem to be a couple more weeks of pleasant autumn weather to look forward to. In Cape Town, the reliable long-term forecast from WindGuru suggests that the next two weeks should have high temperatures hovering between 18°C and 23°C, with very little rain or strong winds predicted. It could all change quite dramatically from next month, but it does seem that there should be some decent weather for Capetonians to enjoy for at least another couple weeks. Looking at Johannesburg, temperatures in the mornings and nights are beginning to fall, but midday highs of about 20°C look typically consistent for the next two weeks, with no forecast of heavy rainfall or storms. OTHER SA WEATHER TO NOTE In Durban, this is the time of the year when the weather in KZN is always extremely enviable, as evidenced by the fact that temperatures this weekend could reach as high as 26°C, with clear and calm conditions. For the most part, warm and humid autumn weather looks like the order of the day for foreseeable future for Durbanites to enjoy, with the only sign of significant rain forecast for 26 May. Down the coast, Port Elizabeth also looks set for some last rays of what will seem like summer, with temperatures reaching as high as 26°C on Wednesday, and touching 30°C on Friday. Meanwhile, the SA Weather Service has actually issued a heatwave warning for the north-western parts of RSA, lasting until 16 May. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SOME OF THIS GOOD WEATHER? Durban abuzz over Nedbank Cup final showdown
Durban was abuzz this weekend as thousands of fans descended on the city for the much anticipated Nedbank Cup final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida stadium. Security was tight as team supporters arrived early and were monitored by police after a ticket sales debacle earlier in the week that saw the over-issue of 10,000 tickets for the derby. The blunder led to threats of violence as fans travelling from afar vowed to watch the match regardless of whether their tickets were valid. After the threats, security was beefed up and several roads leading to the stadium were closed, causing heavy congestion. SAPS public order police and metro police were keeping an eye on the crowds. Fans spotted by TimesLIVE outside the stadium before the game were behaving well. Sakhile Mhlanga, a Pirates supporter from Mpumalanga, appealed for calm ahead of the game. 'It would be nice if people can behave themselves, we do not want to see ugly scenes,' said Mhlanga. He and three friends managed to buy tickets. 'We booked accommodation immediately after we heard the final would be in Durban,' he said. Another rumour that caused tension was that Durban fans were allocated fewer tickets because they were not big investors in the game. Moses Mabhida Stadium general manager Vusi Mazibuko said the claims were baseless. 'We cannot deliberately sabotage Durbanites, people must know we had no control over the sale of tickets,' said Mazibuko. The city set up fan parks featuring entertainment at South Beach and Albert Park for people who failed to get tickets. Bheki Gwala from KwaDukuza said it was not easy for people to cause havoc at the stadium because they feared provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Some people tried to incite violence chanting the war slogan Hlangana Zulu — loosely translated as Zulus must unite. Mkhwanazi is known for his no nonsense stance against lawlessness and during a media briefing this week issued a stern warning to anyone planning to misbehave. The derby was a business opportunity for locals. Car guards seemed to be making a fortune from motorists looking for parking, charging R50 for a spot with a take it or leave it attitude. Some people were selling tickets at exorbitant prices. A security guard at one stadium entrance tried to sell a ticket for R400 to a TimesLIVE journalist. 'I have already sold two at R400. I am still left with two,' he said. Some were selling tickets at R500.
