Inter-State human trafficking racket surfaces in Asifabad in Telangana
An inter-State human trafficking racket allegedly involving a suspended police constable has surfaced in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district with the arrest of six accused, including four women and the suspended constable, in two separate cases of human trafficking by the Asifabad police on Wednesday evening.
The incident has once again brought into sharp focus the clandestine operation of inter-State gangs targeting poor tribal women in the district.
A villager of Asifabad mandal lodged a complaint with the Asifabad police over a week ago seeking to trace his missing daughter. A detailed investigation into the missing person case led to busting of the human trafficking racket.
It was another complaint filed by a victim of human trafficking racket who escaped from the clutches of traffickers in Madhya Pradesh and returned to Asifabad recently that uncovered the gang involved in the nefarious crime.
Preliminary investigation into the two cases revealed that the accused had sold two women for ₹1.30 lakh and ₹1.10 lakh to some persons in Madhya Pradesh on the pretext of marriage a couple of months ago, sources said.
The Asifabad police on Wednesday arrested six of the total nine members of the gang under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the provisions of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.
Those arrested include suspended police constable Kameri Haridas, a resident of New Rajampet in Asifabad, Durgam Sudhakar, a labourer of Neelvai village in Mancherial district and four women hailing from the erstwhile Adilabad district.
One of the absconding accused hails from Jawra in Madhya Pradesh. A police team has been deputed to Madhya Pradesh to nab the remaining accused.
