Weather Authority Alert: 1 more brown-out day before beautiful Easter

I had just pulled up for our noon service at church when my phone alarm triggered. Another Dust Storm Warning!! Again, the Interstate between Las Cruces and Lordsburg is closed due to dangerous conditions. El Paso is experiencing its second brown-out from dust for the second time this week, and we are likely to have another brown-out from dust on Saturday. The change? Saturday will feel much colder as a cold front blows through. Here's your exclusive 9-Hour Forecast: TONIGHT: KTSM has issued a Weather Authority Alert due to powerful winds and blowing dust today and Saturday. A Wind Advisory is posted until 8 PM. A Dust Storm Warning is posted until 6:30 PM but may be extended. A Dust Storm Warning is the highest level of warning for dust with visibility in some place under 1/4 mile. Drive carefully. The SW winds will be strongest during the evening hours, will cause a brown-out of dust, and will gust near 65 mph. The low will be 55, and the winds will die down a bit during the overnight hours. FORECAST: Saturday will be partly to mostly cloudy with much colder gusts. The SW winds will shift NW as a cold front comes through. Winds will gust near 55 mph, so yes, we will see blowing dust and a near brown-out by afternoon. Add in a chance of a few drops of rain for a real mess. Saturday's high: 68. By Saturday evening, the winds will start to die down, and the dust will settle. After a horrible stretch of windy, dusty days, we can look forward to Easter Sunday. It will be gorgeous with sunshine, light winds, and a high of 77. Monday will be sunny and breezy with a high of 85. The SW winds will range from 5-20 mph. Tuesday will be sunny with moderate winds and a high of 87. The west winds will gust to 30 mph, but we should be dust free. Wednesday will be sunny and 86 with warm, moderate winds (no dust). Wetter weather moves in later this week

Winds are settling down tonight for most of New Mexico with windy weather sticking around southern New Mexico Wednesday. Wetter weather will move in later this week. High winds picked up dust across New Mexico Tuesday afternoon. A few places have even measured gusts over 70 mph, with most of the state gusting over 50 mph at times. Several Dust Storm Warnings and Dust Storm Advisories were issued in dust prone areas. It has also caused the closer of several roads and interstates in southern New Mexico today. The storm responsible for the high winds has even brought a little moisture into western, central, and northern New Mexico. Light snow has fallen in the mountains with a couple spotty sprinkles elsewhere. Even Farmington saw snow this afternoon. Winds will settle down across the northern half of New Mexico overnight, while southern New Mexico will stay breezy. What little rain and snow is falling out there will also end overnight. High winds will pick back up through Wednesday afternoon across southern New Mexico with gusts up to 50 mph possible. There will be another risk for high fire danger and blowing dust in southern and southeastern parts of the state. Temperatures statewide will also be much cooler Wednesday afternoon. Breezy winds return statewide Thursday as our next storm system approaches New Mexico. A few light rain and mountain snow showers will be possible Thursday in northern and northwestern parts of the state. Temperatures will stay cool Thursday. The storm moves into New Mexico starting Friday as moisture gets drawn up into eastern New Mexico. This will produce widespread showers in eastern New Mexico with isolated to scattered rain showers and mountain snow along and west of I-25. A backdoor cold front will move in from the northeast early Saturday morning, pushing south and west across New Mexico through the afternoon and evening. This will provide a focus for some of the heaviest rain and heaviest mountain snow as it moves across the state. Snow levels may drop as low as 6,000′ by Sunday morning, bringing snowfall to not only the mountains, but even lower elevations across western, central, northern, and eastern New Mexico. Travel problems may be possible on Sunday morning along I-25 and I-40 in these parts of the state. Some snow may even mix in with rain in the Albuquerque Metro. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Some roads have been closed for safety: Interstate 10 in Texas between mile markers 9 and 54 and Highway 54 in New Mexico between mile markers 1 and 39. What a horrible, no good, terrible, most disgusting, miserable, nasty weather day! (There, I said it for all of us.) As of 5:45 PM, here are the peak wind gusts. I may update that later this evening because we could be in for a surge of stronger winds before 10 PM. Though the winds will not be quite as strong Wednesday as they have been today, they'll still be strong enough to produce blowing dust again. Multiple crashes reported as dust storm smothers New Mexico highways

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Another round of intense dust storms led to multiple crashes along New Mexico highways and interstates Tuesday, officials said. One multivehicle crash occurred on Interstate 25 between Santa Fe and Albuquerque at State Highway 16, due to near zero visibility from blowing dust, according to the New Mexico State Patrol and National Weather Service. The NMSP told FOX Weather there were some people needing transport to a local hospital for treatment of injuries, but they did not have an exact number as of Tuesday evening. That highway reopened at 3:20 p.m. MT but troopers were still working to escort out those caught in the storm and backup. Another major crash involving at least five semi-trucks was reported in Otero County along U.S. Highway 54, according to the NMSP. Troopers told FOX Weather there were no deaths, but at least three prisoners were injured and hospitalized as a prisoner transport van was among the wreckage. Troopers did not have the number of any additional injuries. Crews ended up closing a 101-mile stretch of the highway spanning Otero County from south to north Tuesday evening, due to crashes and continued poor visibility, according to Ruidoso village officials. Interstate 40 was also reportedly closed near Milagro due to a large crash amid nearby wildfires and poor visibility, according to the NWS. NMSP troopers told FOX Weather commercial vehicles were involved in the crash, which led to fires, but the number of injuries, if any, wasn't given. Eastbound lanes were expected to remain closed well into Tuesday night, troopers said. In Roswell, where gusts reached 75 mph, parts of U.S. highways 70, 380 and 285 were shut down due to poor visibility. Gusts up to 68 mph have been reported in Albuquerque, with visibility dropping as low as a half mile. Albuquerque's Sunport reports some flight operations impacted by the ongoing storm. Dust Storm Warnings remain in effect for much of New Mexico into Tuesday evening as strong wind gusts slam the state. Other gusts have reached 74 mph in Clines Corners, 71 mph in Carlsbad and 68 mph in Truth or article source: Multiple crashes reported as dust storm smothers New Mexico highways
