City leaders remember former Charleston Resilience Officer Dale Morris

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – City of Charleston leaders held a moment of silence at Monday night's city council meeting to remember a former city official who passed away over the weekend. Mayor William Cogswell addressed the gathering, asking everyone to bow their heads during the remembrance of former Charleston Resilience Officer Dale Morris before a chaplain led the group in prayer. '…we thank you for Dale Morris. We thank you for the legacy he has offered our city. For the work that he has done, the dedication, for his spirit for who he was to each of us individually, but also to our city as a whole,' the chaplain said. 'We ask for your blessing upon his family and upon our city and staff members that work closely with him.' Morris died shortly after a bicycling accident that occurred on Johns Island Sunday, officials said. He started working for the city under former Mayor John Tecklenburg in September 2021 after longtime stints with The Water Institute of the Gulf and the Royal Netherlands Embassy, where he was employed for 24 years. 'Dale Morris was a great and brilliant public servant. He co-founded the Dutch Dialogues method to bring expertise to communities with flooding challenges and led the Charleston Water Plan, a blueprint for our city's future,' said Tecklenburg. 'A caring and thoughtful man who will be sorely missed by his family and friends, he was a blessing to Charleston.' Another major project supported by Morris is the Coastal Storm Risk Management project, which aims to protect Charleston from storm surge risk and other tidal and rainfall flooding over the next few decades. The project will consist of a storm surge structure, among other features. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
