I'm Obsessed With The Dutton Family Tree, So I Diagrammed It And Figured Out The Questions We Still Need Answered

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The Duttons' story spans generations, and we've gotten to see so much of it on screen. From the modern Yellowstone to 1883 to 1923, we've learned a lot about the founding and present members of the Montana-based family. Now, with upcoming Yellowstone shows like 1944 and the Rip and Beth spinoff, we'll get to learn more. That means it's beneficial to know the family tree (which you can see below) and the various questions about it that we still need answers to. The end of 1923 felt like it confirmed that Alex and Spencer's baby was the John Dutton II who eventually becomes the father of Yellowstone's John Dutton III (Kevin Costner). However, Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer and Michelle Randolph, who play Spencer, Alex and Elizabeth, respectively, all told me nothing is confirmed. In the words of Schlaepfer: The door's open until Taylor Sheridan shuts it…Brandon and I have talked a lot about who's the lineage, and of course, I think we would love to imagine that our John is the John, but time will tell. Meanwhile, Randolph, whose character was also pregnant at the end of 1923, told me that she could 'confidently say that it's not confirmed.' So, those red lines of the family tree connecting Jack and Elizabeth as well as Spencer and Alex to John Dutton II are warranted, and illustrate maybe the biggest question we have going into 1944. It seems like Elizabeth could be a key player in 1944, especially if she has the baby she would have shared with Jack. After Jack's death, she lived on and moved off the ranch. However, it is not confirmed if the child she was pregnant with was born. If they were, and especially if they end up being a boy named John, things could get messy for the next generation of Duttons. While we know John Dutton II is the father of Kevin Costner's John Dutton III, seeing as Dabney Coleman plays him in Yellowstone, we have no idea who his mother is. We don't even know her name. Odds are, we'll meet the woman John marries in 1944, seeing as that show will likely follow his generation of Duttons when they're in their early to mid twenties. As you can see, there aren't very many "unseen" boxes on the family tree, and this is one of the few massive mysteries left. So, hopefully the next generation of Yellowstone can give us that answer. After Alex's tragic death, it's revealed that Spencer lived on and had a child with another woman who was also a widow. However, he never married her. Explaining this during the voice over, Elsa said: Spencer never remarried. Took the comfort of a widow, made another boy, refused to marry her. Then, one day, the widow was gone. So, will this woman be someone new? Will she be Elizabeth? Will it be a woman from Spencer's past? Anything is possible, and the fact that they had a kid together 100% makes this question a prominent one. Before 1923's finale, we didn't know if John II had siblings, but this situation with Spencer's fellow widow revealed that he would have a half-sibling. Now, I'm curious what this sibling's name will be. Will they have the name of one of the Yellowstone characters – like Beth, Lee or Kayce? Could this child also be named John? If Elizabeth is Spencer's partner, will they name their baby after Jacob or Cara or maybe James or Margaret? All these questions are racing around my mind, and along with learning who the widow is, I also want to know the name of the baby she shares with Spencer. To me, there are three characters who will likely be in 1944. John II, Spencer and Elizabeth. John Dutton II feels like a shoo-in. While we don't technically know if this John will be the child of Alex and Spencer or Jack and Elizabeth, he should be in this series, seeing as both women were pregnant in 1923. Plus, we see John II in Yellowstone as a very old man, and the math lines up for him to be in his early to mid twenties in the '40s. Hypothetically, we'd get to see this character right in the middle of his life, decades after his birth in the '20s and long before he died in the modern day. However, he'll also feel like a new character in a way, because it's not like we really got to know him in the last show, or Yellowstone, for that matter. In one, he was (maybe) a baby, and in the other, he was a man on his deathbed. That leads me to the other characters who could return. Spencer feels like the most obvious answer. In the final moments of 1923, it's revealed that he died 45 years after Alex passed away in 1924. That means he lived until about 1969. So, he is confirmed alive in 1944, and he'd still be at an age where he could likely run the ranch while his kids help out. If Harrison Ford's Jacob can run the ranch into his 80s, I'd bet money Spencer will do it until he can't anymore, too. So, I have a feeling we'll see him in 1944. Paramount Plus: from $7.99 a month/$79.99 a yearTo watch the Duttons in action, you can stream Taylor Sheridan's shows (except Yellowstone) on Paramount+. Along with that franchise, you'll also get access to CBS's catalog with plans that start at $7.99 per month. You can add Showtime to all that with a Premium package that also takes away ads for $12.99 per Deal I also think Elizabeth will show up. She was pregnant at the end of 1923. As we discussed, she could potentially be the widow Spencer has a relationship with. And it makes way too much sense for her and her child to somehow return to Montana to play a part in the ranch's future. Odds are, Cara and Jacob will be dead; we know Jack and Alex are dead. So, of the 1923 Duttons, they probably won't be back. With all that said, my hypothetical roster for returning Duttons in 1944 is: John II, Spencer and Elizabeth. Overall, the Dutton family tree is a fascinating one, and every time I watch 1883 or 1923 with my Paramount+ subscription or Yellowstone with a Peacock subscription, I think about how all the generations are connected as well as all the questions that arise with each one.

Is ‘1923' returning for season 3? Everything we know so far

By Aman Shukla Published on May 8, 2025, 20:23 IST The Yellowstone prequel 1923, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, has captivated audiences with its gritty portrayal of the Dutton family's struggles in the early 20th century. After a dramatic Season 2 finale on April 6, 2025, fans are buzzing with questions: Will there be a 1923 Season 3? What's next for the Duttons? Here's everything we know so far about the future of 1923. The Current Status of 1923 Season 3 As of May 8, 2025, Paramount+ has not officially announced a third season for 1923 . Multiple reports indicate that the series was originally planned as a two-season limited series, a vision confirmed by creator Taylor Sheridan. In a 2022 interview with Deadline , Sheridan stated he needed 'two blocks' of eight episodes to tell the story, suggesting Season 2 was intended to wrap up the narrative. Actor Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer Dutton, further reinforced this in a 2023 Hollywood Reporter interview, describing Season 2 as the 'bookend' of the 1923 story. Why a Season 3 Seems Unlikely The Season 2 finale, 'A Dream and a Memory,' provided significant closure for key characters. Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra Dutton (Julia Schlaepfer) faced tragic yet conclusive arcs, with a voice-over by Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) narrating Spencer's life up to 1969. This suggests the story was designed to end. Paramount+ has confirmed the next Yellowstone prequel, 1944 , which will explore the Duttons during World War II. This shift in timeline indicates the franchise is moving forward rather than extending 1923 . Where to Watch 1923 Both seasons of 1923 are streaming exclusively on Paramount+. If you're catching up, Season 1 has eight episodes, while Season 2 has seven, culminating in the two-hour finale. Aman Shukla is a post-graduate in mass communication . After 1923's Season 2 Finale, I Can't Stop Thinking About A 1944 Theory I Have About Elizabeth And The Dutton Family

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. After not getting confirmation about the Dutton family tree in 1923, I've been thinking a lot about why. This has led to a whole bunch of theorizing on my end, and I've come to the conclusion that this lack of verification comes down to the role Michelle Randolph's Elizabeth could play in the upcoming Yellowstone show, 1944. Now, before we get into this theory, let's get the facts straight first. In the penultimate episode of 1923's second season, Jack Dutton died, making Elizabeth a widow. She, as far as we know, is also pregnant. So, when she left the Dutton ranch in the Season 2 finale, she was single and with child. Therefore, the door is open when it comes to the role she and her kid will play in the Dutton lineage and the ongoing mystery about which couple from this show are the grandparents of Kevin Costner's John Dutton. So, I – like the naive viewer I was – had assumed that Alex naming her baby John right before her death was confirmation that she and Spencer were the grandparents of Yellowstone's John Dutton. However, three of the four 1923 cast members involved in this mystery basically told me, 'Not so fast.' Michelle Randolph specifically told me 'confidently' that this birth didn't confirm anything. In an interview with CinemaBlend, she said: Is the door is still open? I don't know. And so, like, you can't confirm then, like, it could go either way. I feel like everyone has their own theory, but I can confidently say that it's not confirmed. This statement led me to think two things: Elizabeth could also name her baby John, after Jack's dad. Elizabeth could return to the Yellowstone with her kid in 1944. While it feels a bit silly for two babies who are born around the same time in the same family to be named John, it's not illogical. Spencer and Elizabeth have deep connections to John (he was Spencer's brother and Elizabeth's father-in-law), so it'd make sense for them to both want to use his name. Also, Elizabeth didn't have her baby in Montana (as far as we know); she left before that could happen. Therefore, it's plausible that she never thought she'd come back and then decided to name her son John, seeing as the likelihood of her kid meeting Spencer and Alex's kid would be low. Now, with this door about lineage still wide open, I think Elizabeth could return to the ranch with her child, meaning there could be two Johns. Maybe she is passionate about them learning where their father came from. Maybe she wants them to be connected to the Duttons. Maybe she wants them to fight for their right to the ranch. All or none of that could happen. However, I do think it's possible that Randolph's character could return in 1944 with her kid named John to play a pivotal role in the Yellowstone's future. So, we have the wrinkle that Elizabeth could return to the ranch with her John. However, I think it could get more complex than that. At the end of 1923 (which you can stream with a Paramount+ subscription), Elsa's voiceover tells us exactly how Spencer lived out the rest of his life after Alex died. Specifically, she mentioned that he never remarried, but he had another child with a fellow widow, explaining: Spencer never remarried. Took the comfort of a widow, made another boy, refused to marry her. Then, one day, the widow was gone. Now, again, Elizabeth having a baby with Spencer feels unlikely. However, think about it for a second. Elizabeth is really the only person who could possibly understand what Spencer went through, and they both faced insurmountable loss at the end of Season 2. It's possible they simply decided to be together out of comfort and convenience, not love. Maybe they make a choice to raise their kids together, but it ultimately doesn't work out. That would also put another Dutton in the next generation who has a claim to the land, and it adds an interesting level of complexity to the family tree. And that, my friends, is what leads me to the wildest part of this theory about Elizabeth. I'm of the opinion that it'd be epic if 1944 focused on a conflict within the family instead of the Duttons dealing with an outside adversary. While I realize that Jamie made this kind of civil war-like conflict present in Yellowstone, there was always also an outside source working even harder to take the family down. In this new show, I want it to be fully Dutton vs. Dutton, and I think Elizabeth is the key to making this happen. I think it's totally possible she'll come back with her son (who would likely be in his 20s in 1944), and they'll want the land that Jack died protecting. If her child is indeed named John, I think this kind of conflict would become even more likely, seeing as one of them will have to become the sole patriarch who eventually passes down the land to Kevin Costner's John. Also, if there are three kids in the mix, all of whom have a claim to the land, it'd be fascinating to see how they pick who gets it. If my theory about the widow being Elizabeth is right, that adds even more reason for tension, because she will disappear at some point. On top of all that, there was a line said by Jacob right before Spencer killed Whitfield in the Season 2 finale that seemed to imply that tourism or outside business would not be an issue for the Duttons for at least a generation. He said: I plan on making such an example of you that it will be 50 years before one of your kind dares to enter this valley again. So, if that's true, what kind of enemy could they possibly face? Someone within the family seems like a great answer. Overall, I think Elizabeth coming back and either her or her kid/kids trying to stake claim on the land against Spencer and Alex's son would be a great concept for a TV show. It'd also be a fascinating continuation of 1923 that bridges the gap between that generation of Duttons and Yellowstone's.
