USIM, TH produce braille Haj Guidebook for visually impaired

SEREMBAN: Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), in collaboration with Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), has allocated nearly RM22,000 to publish a braille version of the Haj Guidebook for the Visually Impaired. USIM's Ibnu Ummi Maktum Research Centre (UMMI) director, Associate Professor Dr Norakyairee Mohd Raus, said the publication marks a significant step forward in promoting inclusivity and equal access to religious education for all. He said the project's total cost was RM21,597.57, describing it as a strategic investment to ensure that individuals with visual impairments can perform haj with confidence and understanding. 'We hope this guidebook will benefit visually impaired pilgrims and inspire those who have yet to perform the haj to prepare themselves when the time comes. 'If they have the means and support, we would be pleased to welcome them as Duyufurrahman (guests of the Most Merciful) in the future, Insha-Allah,' he said in a statement today. Norakyairee said the initiative began in 2023 as a final-year student project at USIM. In 2024, the university was appointed as a consultant by TH's Haj Guidance Division. The collaboration involved content development, braille-friendly design, and joint content reviews to ensure the guide is accurate and effective for the visually impaired. 'This initiative reflects USIM and TH's commitment to inclusive research, innovation, and guidance — making haj a meaningful and achievable experience for all,' he said. The project was led by Dr Mohd Nur Adzam Rasdi, Coordinator of Inclusive Research at UMMI and a lecturer at USIM's Faculty of Quranic and Sunnah Studies (FPQS). It was also supported by the Islamic NGO, the Association of Visually Impaired Muslims Malaysia (PERTIS), and USIM's Publishing Centre. Previously, TH assured that the welfare of Malaysian pilgrims, including those with visual impairments, will be prioritised during the 1445H/2025M haj season. Special support will be given to help them complete key rituals, especially the wukuf in Arafah. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, said 11 visually impaired pilgrims are currently in the Holy Land for the 1446H/2025 season and will receive the necessary assistance from TH staff.

Blind For 38 Years, Retired Teacher Fulfils Dream Of Performing Haj Pilgrimage

From Nurliyana Farhah Ruslan MAKKAH, May 30 (Bernama) -- Amidst the sea of millions of pilgrims gathered in the Holy Land, a woman's heart overflowed with gratitude as she fulfilled a lifelong dream, despite having lost her sight for the past 38 years. Zawiah Mohamad, 62, a former mathematics teacher, has been blind since the age of 24 after battling glaucoma that began affecting her vision at 16. Yet, standing in the sacred precincts of Masjidil Haram, she considers herself immensely blessed. 'Words cannot describe how much Allah loves me. Even though I was tested with the loss of my sight, which was never mine, but loaned by Him, I remain content. As long as I have this breath, and granted the chance to set foot in the Grand Mosque as a Duyufurrahman, I am thankful. Insya Allah, I will proceed with the Masyair in a few days,' she shared with reporters here. Zawiah reflected on a difficult chapter of her life when doctors urged her to terminate her pregnancy and undergo immediate eye surgery to save her vision. But driven by faith and maternal instinct, she refused. 'I got married in December 1986 and found out I was expecting in August 1987. Towards the end of September that year, I developed a high fever, severe headaches, and it felt as if needles were piercing my eyes. I couldn't open them at all. 'Then, on the morning of September 26, the pain subsided. I tried to open my eyes, but everything was dark,' she recounted with a trembling voice. Despite the hardship, Zawiah safely gave birth to her first son on May 6, 1988, a moment she considers one of the greatest blessings of her life. Accompanied by her husband Mohd Isa Yakob, 62, and their two daughters, Nor Salehah Mohd Isa, 36, and Faizah Suaida Mohd Isa, 25, Zawiah also holds on to hope for a miracle — the restoration of her sight.

TH Staff Urged To Show Teamwork, Compassion In Serving Malaysian Pilgrims

From Nurliyana Farhah Ruslan MAKKAH, May 4 (Bernama) -- Tabung Haji (TH) personnel for the 1446H/2025M Haj season have been reminded to uphold the spirit of teamwork and mutual support across all sectors to ensure the smooth running of this year's pilgrimage operations. Head of the Malaysian Haj Delegation, Mohd Hisham Harun, said staff are expected to carry out their duties with patience, sincerity, and a strong sense of responsibility for the well-being of Malaysian pilgrims throughout their time in the Holy Land. "They should be grateful to be chosen to serve the Duyufurrahman (guests of Allah). It's also important to cultivate patience, as pilgrims come from diverse backgrounds and arrive with high hopes of fulfilling their Haj in the best possible way. 'With that in mind, we must be wise and compassionate in handling their needs and expectations,' he told reporters after a Yasin recital and solat hajat held at the TH headquarters in the Abraj Al Janadriyah building on Sunday. The session, held after Zohor prayers, was led by Haj guidance officer (PIHTAS) Muhamad Khairul Basri Osman. TH has deployed personnel across various operational sectors in the Holy Land, including accommodation and zone management, healthcare, Haj guidance and visits, finance, media, transportation, catering, baggage handling, customer service, and more. This year's Haj season involves two main groups of staff – 358 from the Welfare Delegation and 274 from the Medical Delegation. -- BERNAMA

First group of Malaysian haj pilgrims set to enter Makkah starting May 4

MADINAH — The movement of the first group of 284 Malaysian pilgrims for the 1446H/2025 haj season into Makkah will begin in stages, starting May 4. Tabung Haji (TH) Zone Two manager in Madinah, Shahidan Ishak said that to ensure a smooth and orderly movement, pilgrims will attend a briefing session conducted by TH staff a day before they depart for Makkah. 'We will provide a preparatory briefing to ensure pilgrims fully understand and comply with all necessary requirements before setting off, including donning the ihram and making other essential preparations,' he told the Malaysian media here. He said that the briefing will include important information such as the time and location for making the ihram intention (niat). 'For instance, pilgrims will only make their ihram intention upon reaching the Miqat at Bir Ali before continuing their journey to Makkah for the umrah (minor haj) rituals,' Shahidan explained. To further assist pilgrims, he said TH has also set up guidance and visitation counters at its Madinah Operations Office, offering information and support related to haj and umrah rituals. Meanwhile, Shahidan said that in addition to logistical preparations, a total of 13 staff members, comprising eight general haj officers and five religious guides from the Pembimbing Ibadat Haji Tanah Suci (PIHTAS) team, have been stationed in Zone Two in Madinah to ensure smooth operations and effective management of pilgrims this year. Nevertheless, he said all pilgrims are reminded to wear their identification tags and wristbands at all times to facilitate tracking and ensure their safety throughout their stay in the Holy Land. 'To keep pilgrims well-informed, updates and important announcements will be shared continuously through official WhatsApp groups and bulletin boards placed around the hotel premises,' he said. Shahidan said various facilities have also been made available to pilgrims in Zone Two, including customer service counters, Bank Islam service points, baggage handling assistance, and prepaid SIM card registration counters. For this year's haj season, TH has arranged accommodation across three buildings in Madinah. Pilgrims in Zone One are housed at the Anwar Al Madinah Movenpick and Saja Al Madinah hotels, while those in Zone Two are accommodated at the Emaar Royal Hotel Madinah. Out of the 632 Tabung Haji personnel deployed this season, 122 are stationed in Madinah to ensure that all services and rituals for the Duyufurrahman (guests of the Most Merciful) run smoothly and efficiently. — BERNAMA
