‘Cop suitor' dupes woman, flees with 1cr
Kolkata: A 38-year-old woman from Sinthee, who was looking for a groom and signed up on a matrimonial site, was duped of Rs 1 crore after a man befriended her by posing as a cop and fled with her money.
The accused is married and has two kids. The woman, in her petition to court on whose basis the FIR was lodged on Monday, claimed that she lost her husband in 2020, barely two years after her wedding.
When her family pressurized her to remarry, in order to look after her son, the woman signed up on the website. On assurance of marriage, the victim agreed to mutate her flat with KMC, where she agreed to pay a lawyer Rs 3 lakh.
This lawyer was supposedly engaged by the accused. As it turned out, the accused and the lawyer were the same person. The victim financially supported him, before realising in Jan that she was being duped from 2022 with a fake promise of marriage. —Dwaipayan Ghosh
