Soccer-Chelsea and Betis fans clash before Conference League final
Soccer Football - Conference League - Final - Real Betis & Chelsea fans gather in Wroclaw - Wroclaw, Poland - May 28, 2025 Police officers look on as Chelsea fans are seen outside a restaurant ahead of the match REUTERS/Dylan Martinez WROCLAW, Poland (Reuters) -Fans of Chelsea and Real Betis have clashed ahead of Wednesday's Conference League final in Polish host city Wroclaw, authorities said, warning they would clamp down hard on violence. Footage on social media showed fans in the city centre hurling chairs at each other and taking part in running battles on Tuesday evening. Polish police said they were attempting to identify fans involved in one incident and had detained a Spanish citizen after a scuffle on Tuesday night. A further three Spaniards were detained in the early hours of Wednesday after they took down UEFA Conference League Final flags. Last week's Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur was also marred by clashes between supporters ahead of the match in Bilbao. "Zero tolerance for violence on our streets!," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on X. "I thank the police for their decisive actions against the hooligans in Chelsea and Betis shirts in Wroclaw. We warn you: if necessary, the police will be even more ruthless today!" 'WE'RE NOT SCARED' Polish police said everyone could feel safe thanks to a large police presence saturating certain areas. Chelsea, twice Champions League winners and six times English top-flight champions, arrive at the final having secured fourth place in the Premier League on Sunday, giving them Champions League football next season. Real Betis supporters, meanwhile, are revelling in reaching a European final for the first time in the club's history and the chance to overshadow local rivals Sevilla with their own chapter of continental success. Hours before the game on Wednesday afternoon, under steady rain, most fans were brushing off the violence. "There is always someone bad in a crowd of 50,000 people," said Betis supporter Juan in Wroclaw's old town square. "We are loving every second of this , we're going to celebrate afterwards, and we hope Chelsea fans will cry." Another Betis fan, Maria, added: "We're not scared, we're very happy. Most of us just want to enjoy the football and the match." (Reporting by Tommy Lund in Wroclaw, Alan Charlish and Pawel Florkiewicz in Warsaw; Editing by Andrew Cawthorne)

Soccer-Betis chase history as chance to overshadow Sevilla fires up fans
Soccer Football - Conference League - Final - Real Betis Training - Wroclaw Stadium, Wroclaw, Poland - May 27, 2025 General view during training REUTERS/Dylan Martinez WROCLAW, Poland (Reuters) - Real Betis supporters are revelling in their team's achievement of reaching a European final for the first time in the club's history and the chance to overshadow local rivals Sevilla and enjoy their own chapter of continental success. Betis face Chelsea in the Conference League final on Wednesday, with supporters savouring every moment of the journey to a long-awaited European showpiece in one of the side's biggest matches since the club was formed almost 118 years ago. As far as the local rivalry in their city is concerned, the Betis and Sevilla trophy cabinets tell the story. While Betis have won three Spanish Cup titles and a LaLiga crown, Sevilla have lifted five Copa del Rey trophies, one league title and seven UEFA Cup/Europa League crowns. However, this season has marked a shift in the fortunes of the clubs in the city known as the 'The Pearl of Andalusia.' While Betis finished in a respectable sixth place and secured Europa League football for next season, Sevilla ended up just one point above the relegation zone, with their frustrated fans storming the club's training ground earlier this month. Betis followers hope their team can also lift a European trophy and stake a claim to be the city's top side. "Nowadays we feel we're better than Sevilla. We're higher in the league, have better players and a better-run team," Betis supporter Jesus said. The fans were also proud to be the first Betis supporters to wear the club's white and green colours for a European final. "We have dreamed about it for so many years and now we are living it. We will enjoy this time with friends and families, and drink a lot of beer," said supporter Alvaro. (Reporting by Tommy Lund in Wroclaw; Editing by Ken Ferris)

Prince Harry says he could be targeted by extremists due to decade-long military service
Prince Harry says he is devastated after losing his appeal to reinstate full police protection when visiting the UK and will write to the British government to request an urgent examination on the matter. Harry's statement comes a day after the BBC broadcast an interview with the royal where he said In a statement published on the Sussex Royal website, Harry said he feared for his and his immediate family's safety due to his military-related experience. "In recent years my family and I have been subjected to well-documented neo-Nazi and extremist threats, including from Al-Qaeda," Harry said in a statement. " My decade of military service, particularly two tours of duty in Afghanistan, as well as social and tabloid media frenzy, have only intensified those threats. " Harry argued that his security should never have been removed in the first place. "The stark difference is I was born into lifelong circumstances that create inherent security threats," he said. Prince Harry says he believes he has been treated as an exception on his security dispute. ( Reuters: Dylan Martinez ) The main issue raised by the appeal was the dismissal of the duke of Sussex's claim that he should retain his full British security when he visits his homeland, instead of the current security arrangement. Harry said he offered to pay for the costs of "necessary and effective" police protection to keep him and his family safe, but got rejected. Royal commentator Juliet Rieden said Britain's Metropolitan Police and the Home Office declined Prince Harry's request to personally pay for security for those private visits, not the royal household nor the king. "The current bespoke arrangement is that when they are at royal events or staying at royal residences, they have royal police protection, but not when they are visiting the UK for personal reasons," Ms Rieden told the ABC. "As one source explained, the taxpayer-funded British police are not guns for hire." In 2023, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "To allow an individual to pay for protective security would create a precedent in which other wealthy individuals could argue that they too should be permitted to pay for such services". Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, have lived outside Britain since 2020. ( Reuters: Toby Melville ) The duke stepped back from his senior royal duties and moved to Canada in 2020 with his young family, and later to California. During the appeal, Harry's leading counsel, Shaheed Fatima KC, argued that the duke had been "singled out" for "inferior treatment" as compared to all others protected by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC). In a Photo shows harry bbc snip In an interview with BBC, Prince Harry has said that he wants "reconciliation" with the Royal Family. "The judge decided that RAVEC, in taking its decision to withdraw the duke's security, had good reason not to follow its 2017 policy," the summary read. "The judge also decided that the duke of Sussex was not in an analogous position to certain other VIPs for whom protection is provided by RAVEC." The 2017 policy allows the committee to evaluate a risk analysis conducted by its own Risk Management Board to determine which individuals should receive protection. The UK will always be part of who I am: Harry The duke said he wanted to continue his charitable work in supporting the causes and people that were important to him, and for his children to know the beauty of his homeland. "The UK is my birthplace and will always be part of who I am," the royal said in a statement. "It is a place I love, and the country where my son was born. Harry also said he was committed to a life of public service. "This has been and will always be my life's work, and when you strip away the noise, you'll be able to hear, all I've been asking for is safety."
