PBOT crews continue to clear roads as snow falls around Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Even as plows worked to clear streets overnight, a fresh layer of snow continued to fall.
Portland Bureau of Transportation plows were out through the night, and spokesperson Dylan Rivera says the work is nowhere near over.
According to Rivera, overnight crews are finishing their 12-hour shift and another crew will soon take to the roads.
Snow and ice ends: When does the melting begin?
'The overnight 12-hour shift is wrapping up and so those plows came back into the yard in North Portland in the last hour or so,' Rivera said. 'Dayshift is getting briefed, they'll be climbing into their vehicles momentarily and heading out. You'll be able to see them on the Winter Weather Center, our interactive map.'
Rivera also told KOIN 6 that while some areas are starting to clear, like Southeast Division Street, areas at higher elevations still have a layer of snow.
'What we're going to be doing today is putting a mix of salt and sand together, and so that will do two things, that will give you some additional traction on the snowy surface, that thin layer, and that will also help break it up as we thaw today with the action of vehicle tires, traffic and then mother nature helping us out this afternoon, that grit will help break it up and help us thaw as quickly as possible,' said Rivera.
With hazardous conditions still remaining around the area, it's advised to plan extra time if you have to drive and to reduce speeds by 10 mph.
Officials also advise if you see a snow plow that you should give it extra space if possible.
