LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt by a boat to smuggle out 1,428kg cooking oil in packets via Tanjung Batu waters, here, on Saturday. Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali said, acting on intelligence, the MMEA team spotted the suspicious boat at about 6am about 0.2 nautical miles from south of Tanjung Batu. Advertisement 'Upon realizing the presence of enforcement team, the boat immediately sped towards land before the boat skipper jumped into the water to escape. 'Result of inspection on the boat found 84 boxes of cooking oil hid inside black-color plastic,' he said, in a statement on Saturday. According to Dzulfikhar, all the seizures including the boat were taken to Maritime Felda Sahabat post jetty for further action. He said, all the seizures were estimated worth RM10,000. MMEA Lahad Datu Zone director, Commander Dzulfikhar Ali, said the suspicious boat was spotted around 6 am, just 0.2 nautical miles from shore. The suspect fled toward land and jumped into the sea to escape. Advertisement A total of 84 boxes of cooking oil were found hidden in black plastic bags. The seized goods and boat, worth an estimated RM10,000, were taken to the FELDA Sahabat Maritime Post. LAHAD DATU: The Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a fishing vessel near Pulau Tabawan, Kunak waters on Sunday for breaching its licence conditions. The vessel was stopped at 11.45am during operations under Op Pluto Timur and Op Tiris, said Lahad Datu Maritime Director Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali. It was manned by four individuals aged 27 to 39, including three Filipinos—one of whom was the skipper—and a local crew member. Checks found the boat had violated the Fisheries Act 1985 by fishing less than 1.5 nautical miles from shore. KOTA KINABALU: Maritime officials in Kunak district arrested four people for breaking marine regulations on Sunday. The arrest came when the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officials were conducting patrols near Pulau Tabawan Kunak, at around 11.45am. MMEA director for Lahad Datu zone, Dzulfikhar Ali said their personnel had noticed a tug boat operating too close to shore and had approached the boat to inspect. Upon inspection, they found four people aged between 27 and 39, comprising three Filipinos and a local man on board, he said. Inspections found that they were netting anchovies too close to shore, breaching the licensing regulations, he said. Dzulfikhar said all the crew, the vessel and their catch were brought back to the Lahad Datu fishery jetty for further investigation. He said MMEA would continue to increase their presence at sea and conduct patrols to prevent crime. He urged the public to share information or any suspicious activities via the Lahad Datu Maritime WhatsApp number at 016-9305727 or the 999 emergency number.

LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a local fishing vessel off Kampung Bakapit waters for failing to report a change of skipper during routine patrol operations. Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali said the vessel was apprehended under Ops Pluto Timur and Ops Tiris. The inspection revealed the skipper replacement was not reported, breaching regulations critical to maritime safety and proper licensing. The vessel, valued at RM300,000, was escorted to Lahad Datu Fishery Jetty and handed to MMEA for further investigation under the Sabah Ports and Harbour Enactment 2002.
