E-ZPass scammers targeting Texas drivers

TEXAS (KMID/KPEJ)- A scam that began targeting Massachusetts drivers earlier this year has seemingly made its way to Texas. Here's everything you need to know about the scam. Texas like the one below have been sent to multiple people in the 915 and 432 area code over the last week: The text looks as if it's from a legitimate toll system, like the one in the Dallas area, for example, and alerts drivers that they have an outstanding toll balance, a modest amount, that might seem legitimate to drivers enrolled in any E-Z pass toll system. That's part of the effectiveness of the scam, because it's such a minor amount, most people with existing toll accounts wouldn't question it. However, the scammers are not after a $7.00 unpaid toll, they want your identity. The official-looking link will direct you to a site where scammers will pull down your personal and financial information. So, if you travel to any area with toll roads, either for work or for vacation, it's possible you COULD have an unpaid toll. BUT E-ZPass or TollTag, for those in north Texas, won't text you for a payment, ever. Instead, you'd get a letter in the mail, that might even include a picture of your license plate as it passed through a toll road, and will break down your legitimate tolls and offer several ways to pay. So, if you get one of these texts, don't click the link; simply delete it. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
