Eufy E15 robot mower review: is clever wireless machine the future of gardening?
Eufy's revolutionary robot lawn mower debut, E15, has no boundary wire or antenna, which means that set-up is super easy and quick. Many other robot lawn mowers use a perimeter wire (also called a boundary wire) or an RTK antenna and GNSS to navigate and stay within the designated lawn area. But Eufy E15 uses visual recognition, AI algorithms and 3D sensors to distinguish the boundaries of your lawn and avoid obstacles in real time. It does this by mapping your gardens in a similar way to the many robot vacuums that Eufy manufactures map the rooms of your home. (The Anker subsidiary became Ireland's number one robovac firm in late 2024 in terms of sales, incidentally.) Setting up and installing the grey-coloured Eufy E15 unit and the accompanying covered base station including connecting to WiFi and Bluetooth takes about 15 minutes. Everything you need for setting up is in the box, incidentally including the mains cable and plug for charging it. You are then ready to unleash the robot for its initial auto-mapping run. Eufy E15's Visual Fusion Sensing and Decision (V-FSD) tech drives the mower around your garden to see which areas are grassy and which might be no-go zones such as flower beds, hedges and pathways. This process took me only 10 minutes. The same Eufy app you use for your vacuum then saves a map of your garden and you're good to go. The E15's obstacle avoidance tech is smart too - it will avoid any changes on your landscape such as toys strewn on the grass or pets. The intuitive-to-use app allows you to customise most of the Eufy E15's mowing abilities. You can set path directions, grass height, edge spacing, path spacing, travel and blade speed, rain detection and schedule up to eight events. You can also control the device manually in the app using the live camera feature. It's like playing with a remote controlled car that just happens to be mowing your grass. For the most part, however, you are going to let it run autonomously. The firm said the battery has enough capacity to mow a lawn up to 800 square metres in size. The three-wheel machine does a great job of snipping the lawn, even one with rough terrain like mine. It is equipped with a spinning 20cm diameter disc of small but tough cutting razor blades that create clean lines and cut with professional-looking consistency. It will automatically adjust the cutting height from 25mm to 75mm in 5mm increments. And it can handle slopes of up to 18 degrees. E15 is relatively quiet in operation too. The Noise app on my Apple Watch measured the volume at just 55dB of sound. It's a light and easy mower to move around. It measures 60.3cm x 39.4cm x 31.8cm. It has a convenient handle on the rear and it is easy to clean the blades underneath. You can use a garden hose to blast away any dirt or mud or just brush it off. The company recommends changing the blades every couple of months, depending on usage. And it said the camera sensors should be kept clean to ensure accurate navigation and prevent the rain sensor from getting blocked. The camera system employed means E15 can't mow your lawn in the dark. But I doubt that will bother too many people. It's worth noting that you may still need to tidy up some edges with a strimmer. Eufy's base station is waterproof and designed to be located outdoors so the device is ready for use at any time. If you are worried about theft, the mower has a handy hidden compartment for an Apple AirTag or similar tracker which should help you locate it. Eufy E15 is a robot that could well be the future of lawn mowers. Between its precision cutting skills and its simple-to-use app and controls, it is will prove to be a game-changer for anyone with small to medium size and relatively flat gardens. Eufy E15 is on sale now at Amazon and elsewhere, with an RRP of €1,499 (and £1499 in Northern Ireland).

Ethanol industry calls for carbon capture support following economic study
A recent report shows the economic contribution of biofuels to Iowa's economy. Pictured is Elite Octane in Atlantic, which U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins toured on a recent trip to Iowa. (Photo by Cecilia Lynch/USDA) The economic impact of the renewable fuels industry in Iowa was $800 million less in 2024 than it was in 2023, according to a recent study released by Iowa Renewable Fuels Association. The industry association said 'stagnant corn demand' has impacted biofuels' impact on Iowa's economy, and said the best way to increase demand is entry to the ultra-low carbon ethanol markets. 'That is the most cost-effective and impactful tool we can provide our farmers and producers,' Monte Shaw, IRFA executive director, said in a statement. IRFA holds that the direct impacts of biofuels 'remain strong' in the state, with another 'record for fuel production.' Overall, the report found the renewable fuel industry accounted for 2% of Iowa's 2024 gross domestic product, or $5.7 billion. The industry also created more than 34,000 direct and indirect jobs across the state, which is down from 52,000 jobs in 2023. Shaw said some of the change comes from completed construction projects and a closed facility, but the majority of that figure is from the indirect impacts of the stalled market. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX 'The bigger thing is those multiplier effects,' he said. 'When you're buying corn at $7, that income goes over in the economy and supports jobs and other aspects of Iowa's economy … When farmers don't have money, they're not out buying new equipment, they're gonna make stuff last another year, and so that is where those job losses have happened.' Shaw said if the numbers are to increase across the economy, the overall demand for ethanol needs to increase. Right now, he said the supply outweighs demand for corn and soybean commodities, which has led to decreasing corn prices over the past two years. The trend is projected to follow suit for the 2024-2025 crop year. 'Our farmers are very productive, very competitive … they're producing more corn with fewer inputs on the same acres,' Shaw said. 'But we have not been able to build demand fast enough.' Ryan Sauer, vice president of market development for Iowa Corn Growers Association, said if the current trends continue and Iowa doesn't branch into new markets to utilize corn, there could be 'a bit of a repeat' of the farm crisis from the 1980s. 'You've got commodity prices that are going to stay stagnant, you've got input prices that will remain high, and I mean, there's only so long that the banks can allow a farmer to do that,' Sauer said. One route for increased demand could come from the congressional approval of nationwide, year-round, E15, or a blend of ethanol fuel with 15% ethanol. According to studies from the National Corn Growers Association, a 5% increase in ethanol blends, which E15 would represent, equates to an increased demand of 2.3 billion bushels of corn annually. The IRFA study found that 62% of corn in Iowa is processed by the ethanol industry. Sauer said the E15 market would be especially important for Iowa farmers if tariffs upset corn export markets. 'If we're not going to be able to export it because of tariffs and all this, we need all the demand domestically we can get, and E15 will allow us to do that,' Sauer said. Iowa Renewable Fuels Association has also been pushing for year-round E15, but Shaw called it a 'near-term market.' 'All the other market growth opportunities that we see on the horizon are low carbon, ultra-low carbon markets,' Shaw said. 'That's why we're fighting so hard … to make sure that our ethanol producers have the tools they need to produce ultra-low carbon ethanol.' Shaw said sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, is one of the ultra-low carbon fuels the industry hopes to expand to, but there is also demand for fuels in the marine industry, trains and for some construction and tractor equipment. The study said ethanol producers would have to 'lower the carbon intensity' of ethanol production in order to open up the market for SAF. 'This is most easily achieved through environmentally friendly feedstock production practices and access to opportunities for carbon capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide from ethanol production,' the study said. The industries purchasing these fuels want them to be produced with lifetime greenhouse gas emissions below a certain level. Some iterations of guidance for sustainable aviation fuel, for example, required the fuel to be made from corn grown with carbon reducing farming practices. Shaw said being able to reduce carbon emissions via carbon capture and sequestration, like the controversial Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline, would equate to 'tens of billions of gallons' of additional biofuel demand over the next 20 years. 'Do you want to be sitting here around $3.50 corn, and having a bad farm economy?' Shaw said. 'Or, do we want to access these new markets that will literally say, 'Give me every gallon you can?'' The Summit pipeline, and the now terminated Wolf Carbon Solutions pipeline, has drawn opposition from landowners, some politicians and environmental groups like the Sierra Club. Those opposed to the project believe carbon sequestration pipelines are dangerous for communities, often citing a rupture of a pipeline in Satartia, Mississippi. Landowners oppose the taking of easements in agricultural land for the pipeline, especially after the Summit project was conditionally granted the right of eminent domain in June. The issues have been a prominent topic of discussion at the Iowa Capitol this session. The House voted to ban the use of eminent domain on carbon sequestration pipelines, and more recently a group of senators vowed to stand their ground on budget negotiations until the pipeline issue is debated in the chamber. Emma Schmit, pipeline fighters director with Bold Alliance, said the 'unyielding commitment to carbon capture pipelines' is what's holding the biofuels industry back. 'To imply stagnation suddenly has the industry on death's door unless a risky carbon capture pipeline is allowed to destroy over 1,000 miles of prime Iowa farmland is a stretch,' Schmit said in an email. She referenced figures in the study showing another high year for ethanol production, and that corn utilization by the industry has remained consistent. 'If expanding markets via decarbonization is the goal, there are a multitude of options available that don't depend on the destruction of thousands of parcels or the misuse of eminent domain,' Schmit said. According to Summit Carbon Solutions, the project has already secured easement agreements for more than 75% of the route for the first phase of the pipeline. Construction on the pipeline cannot begin until the company has secured permit approval in South Dakota, a process which has been complicated by the state's recent ban on eminent domain for CO2 pipelines and subsequent denial of the permit application from Summit. The company has pledged to reapply with reduced scope in the state. The project could face a similar situation in Iowa if lawmakers advance the bill passed from the House, though substantial amendments to the bill have been proposed in the Senate. Shaw said without carbon sequestration capabilities, Iowa could lose its title as 'most cost-effective place to turn corn into ethanol,' in favor of nearby Nebraska, where a roughly 400-mile carbon dioxide sequestration pipeline through the state is set to be operational by the end of 2025. 'People are treating this like it's some sort of political board game, and they're ignoring the very real ramifications that are happening around us,' Shaw said. SUPPORT: YOU MAKE OUR WORK POSSIBLE

Blended fuel type coming to Kansas this summer
KANSAS (KSNT) – In response to several state governors, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will allow the sale of certain gasoline blends to save money at the pump this summer. On April 28, the EPA announced it would allow the use of E15 gasoline, gas blended with 15% ethanol, during the summer driving season. The action comes after requests from Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin governors. The EPA said this is consistent with President Donald Trump's Executive Order declaring a National Energy Emergency. 'President Trump's commitment to farmers and the Renewable Fuels Standard has been a cornerstone to his leadership. In my confirmation hearing, I pledged to establish certainty when it came to the sale of E15 year-round. Promises made, promises kept,' said EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. Topeka could vote to cut its DEI Office, affirmative action The EPA's emergency fuel waiver went into effect on Thursday and will remain in place through May, 20, the maximum number of days allowed under the Clean Air Act. 'I am issuing this declaration to help alleviate the delay in getting the fuel to the end user,' Governor Laura Kelly said. 'This is not just a Kansas issue; our neighboring states are experiencing the same delays.' Representative Sharice Davids requested that the EPA take action to allow the sale of E15 in March. 'Kansas farmers and producers work hard to supply homegrown energy that lowers costs for families at the gas pump,' Davids said. 'By allowing the sale of E15 this summer, the EPA can ensure Kansans benefit from lower gas prices while strengthening our economy and reducing reliance on foreign oil.' Senator Roger Marshall praises Trump's first 100 days in office
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) praised President Donald Trump's first 100 days in office during a Zoom call Tuesday, calling it 'the rebirth of American greatness.' Marshall cited a drop in illegal border crossings, energy prices, and violent crime as signs the administration is keeping its promises. 'If there's one theme that I've heard over and over from President Trump, it's promises made, promises kept,' he said. Numbers that matter from the first 100 days of Trump's second term Marshall credited the administration with reducing daily illegal crossings from over 10,000 to fewer than 300 and deporting more than 130,000 violent criminal aliens. 'We're seeing a drop in fentanyl poisonings and violent crimes,' he added. When asked whether deporting children alongside their parents conflicts with protections under birthright citizenship, Marshall acknowledged the complexity of the issue. 'Certainly I have empathy,' he said. 'When you have 10 million people that came into your country illegally in a four-year time span, it is almost impossible to deal with.' On energy, Marshall highlighted the falling gas prices in Kansas, linking them to the expansion of drilling policies. He praised the administration's waiver allowing the sale of E15 ethanol fuel during the summer and pushed for its year-round approval. 'This would be so important to farmers,' he said. Marshall also promoted a proposed tax credit for converting soybeans into jet fuel, calling it a major opportunity for Kansas agriculture. 'We'd have to grow five times the amount of soybeans if we made all our jet fuel this way,' he said. On Medicaid, Marshall pledged to protect the program for the most vulnerable but criticized spending growth and alleged misuse in expansion states. 'Medicaid has lost its way,' he said. 'We're going to spend $1 trillion this year.' Asked whether he would have done anything differently in the first 100 days had he been a senior adviser to the president, Marshall declined to second-guess decisions. 'It's like being a Monday morning quarterback,' he said. 'I visit with the president weekly — sometimes several times a week — and try to give him my advice when he asks for it. I think we're making incredible progress.' Trump's 5 biggest mistakes of his first 100 days Marshall closed by urging Congress to enact permanent tax cuts and increase funding for the military and the border. 'America's best days are ahead of us,' he said. 'And I'm very proud to be part of Congress right now.' For more Kansas news, click here.
