Coin hunters should check their collections to see if they have snatched up one of the treasures. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 The Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen 2022 50p coin Credit: The Royal Mint 3 The ultra rare pattern made this coin more valuable Credit: EBay After a bidding war, the coin was snagged for £2,552 and had five bids in total. The coin was released for the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022. It was first 50p ever made to mark a royal event. The heads side of the coin features The Queen on horseback, while the tails face shows the number 70, marking how long Her Majesty had been ruling for. The coin's design was personally been given the nod by the Queen. Around 1.3million of the celebratory coins were made available on "limited release". News of the 50p coin was first revealed by the Royal Mint, exciting collectors. Postmaster Umesh Sanghani, who has run Dedworth Green Post Office in Windsor for 23 years with wife Rashmita, said at the time: "We have had many customers coming into our Post Office to check that we are going to get the special 50p coin. "They don't want to miss out on this souvenir." Other versions of the seven-sided 50p coin are among the most collectable and it's the first time a royal event has appeared on the tail side of the coin. Rare 50p coins can often sell for hundreds of pounds and far more than their face value. Their value is based on how many are available and demand, and if collectors are keen to get their hands on one this can push up the price. What makes a coin more valuable? Mintage figures are generally what collectors look at to work out its value. Low mintage makes it rare which often means it is more valuable, but that's not the only thing. Coin website Change Checker looks at how many of the coins have been collected by its members which shows how easy they may be to find (or not), and ranks them regularly. The experts also track the number of times a design has been requested as a swap over the previous three months, showing the current level of collector demand. While these indexes don't necessarily correspond to value, it can be an effective indicator. Coins with errors like a misprint can also be worth more than face value. A rare error on a 5p coin means it sold for £161 - more than 3,000 times its original value.

Specific error on ultra-rare 50p coin means it's sold for 150 times more than its value – is there one in your pocket?

Collectors started an online bidding war for the rare coin SILVER LINING Specific error on ultra-rare 50p coin means it's sold for 150 times more than its value – is there one in your pocket? A 50p coin with a specific error has sold at auction for a whopping 150 times its original value. The rare coin was minted with a mistake which makes it very valuable to collectors. 3 The coin sold for 150 times its original value Credit: EBay 3 One small detail on the coin boosted its value It was sold for £315.16 following an online bidding war between six bidders hoping to nab the rare coin. The Olympic swimmer 50p has one tiny mistake that boosts its value more than 100 times. Part of the London Olympic commemorative collection the minting error appears on the tails face of the 50p. Without the minting error the coin is only worth its face value. The rare 50p sold at auction depicts an Olympic swimmer mid stroke with water passing around their head. Minted ahead of the London Olympics it is one of 29 commemorative designs created for the games. When it was minted in 2011 a minor mistake was made resulting in a batch of the coins being slightly different to the others. Most of the coins show a swimmer with a clear, smooth face but around 600 were affected by an error that makes them super rare. On the rare version of the coin the wave lines pass through the swimmers face giving the smooth image a ridged texture. Collector's editions of the coins could have the rare misprint and fetch a much higher price. Coins with low mintages and errors are more valuable because there are less of them in circulation. The rarer a coin is the more valuable it becomes to collectors. 3 The are only about 600 coins with the error in circulation What makes a coin rare? One of the most popular types of coins to collect are 50p pieces. This is because of their large surface area, as there is enough spaces to add new and intricate designs on. With a 27.5mm diameter, it's the biggest British coin and is used to celebrate big occasions, anniversaries, and historical events. Errors make a coin unique which means they will most likely be worth more, as there a fewer of them. Even without a misprint, if a coin has a low mintage there are fewer of them in circulation and so are deemed rare. As a general rule of thumb, the rarer the coin the more valuable they are to collectors.

Rare 50p coin sells for 230 times its value at auction – detail to check in your change

COINING IT Rare 50p coin sells for 230 times its value at auction – detail to check in your change Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A RARE 50p coin has sold for an astonishing £115 on eBay – that's 230 times its face value – and it might just be hiding in your spare change. The auction featured a genuine 2009 circulated Kew Gardens 50p in good condition. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Collectors go crazy for this design Credit: EBay 3 The Kew Gardens 50p is widely considered the holy grail of British coin collecting The coin attracted six bids before the hammer came down at £115. The sale took place online and has caught the attention of collectors across London and beyond, where coin fans are always on the lookout for rare finds. The Kew Gardens 50p is widely considered the holy grail of British coin collecting. Just 210,000 of these special coins were released into circulation back in 2009, making them the rarest 50p piece ever issued by The Royal Mint. With such low numbers, the odds of one turning up in your change are extremely slim – but not impossible. The reverse of the coin features a detailed image of the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, with a leafy vine spiralling around the structure. The obverse shows the late Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Collectors go crazy for this design, and it's often the coin that sparks people's interest in the hobby. It even topped scarcity charts in the past and regularly sells for well above face value online. At the peak of its popularity, some sold for hundreds of pounds. Watch coin expert reveal the two rarest 50ps worth up to £195 face value- and key details to look for in change Another Kew 50p recently fetched £134.07 after 19 bids, while similar examples have gone for £79 depending on condition. As always, a coin is only worth what someone is willing to pay, but demand for this one remains high. It's worth noting that this 2009 version is the original and was actually put into circulation. A second version was released in 2019 as part of a commemorative set, but it was never intended for everyday use. The newer coin carries the same pagoda design but features a different portrait of the Queen and the 2019 date. Even the 2019 proof version can go for decent sums, one recently sold for £82 after 11 bids. But it's the original 2009 piece that collectors value most. The Kew Gardens 50p was launched to celebrate 250 years since the gardens opened in 1759. Today, the UNESCO World Heritage Site remains one of Britain's most iconic attractions, boasting treetop walkways, greenhouses, and historic buildings. Prices for rare coins can vary widely depending on interest at auction. But with this coin still commanding high prices, now could be a good time to cash in.

Best Stocks: The unique internet retailer that's cheap, trending higher and a possible trade war winner

(This is The Best Stocks in the Market , brought to you by Josh Brown and Sean Russo of Ritholtz Wealth Management.) Josh: You know who's not raising prices on their customers? eBay . The trade war should have next to no impact on their business and it may even make the site a more desirable shopping location. More on that in a moment. First, here's a one-year chart of eBay, which just hit the Best Stocks in the Market list this week: Best Stock Spotlight: eBay Inc (EBAY) Josh: EBay is a slow grower, but it's been incredibly consistent and resilient in both good economic conditions and bad. When times are good, people are buying more merchandise. When the economy softens, there is an increase in people wanting (or needing) to sell things. As you can see in the chart below, eBay is now approaching multi-year highs: Sean: EBay is the 6th best performer in the consumer discretionary sector this year, up 13%, outperforming 89% of sector constituents in 2025. EBAY trades at a trailing 17x price-to-earnings ratio and a forward 12x price to earnings, making it one of the cheapest consumer discretionary stocks within the S & P 500. While EBAY trades at these valuations, the consumer discretionary sector trades at a 20x P/E, EBAY's industry classification (internet retail) trades at a 23x P/E, and the S & P 500 in its entirety trades at a 24x trailing PE, according to YCharts data. Ebay has been assigned a discount relative to its peers due to its slow growth. EBAY hasn't reported double digit revenue growth YoY since Q2 of 2021. However, it has reported 9 straight quarters of single digit, positive revenue growth YoY. EBAY is a consistent, mature tech platform with a big U.S. bias in terms of its revenue and costs. EBAY reported earnings at the end of April, beating on the top and bottom lines. On that earnings call, the CEO Jamie Iannone had some encouraging things to say about their ability to navigate tariffs, via Quartr: "Our Greater China to U.S. quarter makes up about 5% of total GMV for us. And China overall is a little less than 10%. But about 3/4 of that business of the 5% coming from China to the U.S. is forward deployed to the end markets. So it's already subject to tariffs and so wouldn't be subject to any changes in de minimis based on the cost of the items. On the other half of the inventory or the 1 quarter that's not forward deployed, about 50% of that uses a shipping solution that we've helped create, which is called SpeedPAK. And what that does is it really incorporates all of the tariff complexity and customs complexity right into the shipping solution." The CEO here is explaining that the trade corridor from Greater China to the U.S. represents about 5% of eBay's total Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV), and all of China accounts for a little less than 10% of GMV for EBAY. Of the 5% GMV from China to the U.S., about three-quarters is "forward deployed," meaning the inventory is already in the U.S. and has already been subject to tariffs, the buyer/seller doesn't have to worry about those costs. Therefore, this portion would not be affected by any future changes to the "de minimis" threshold — the value below which imports are exempt from certain tariffs. And for the remaining one-quarter of China-to-U.S. inventory that is not "forward deployed", about half uses eBay's SpeedPAK shipping solution. SpeedPAK is designed to handle the complexities of tariffs and customs, making the process smoother for sellers and buyers. Amazon doesn't report gross unit volume, but looking at revenue on a geographic basis, China accounts for 21% of total revenues while EBAY's revenues from China account for 11% of revenue, according to Quartr. In sum, most of eBay's China-to-U.S. shipments are already compliant with current tariff rules, and for the rest, eBay has solutions in place to manage customs and tariff complexities. EBAY's price is reflecting durability - EBAY is now 13% below all time highs, and climbing. The stock has been forming support along its rising 50 day moving average, while remaining a value stock in a growing sector. Risk Management Josh: Look for the rising 200-day moving average to act as support as it has the whole way up. EBAY quickly broke below its 200-day moving average on April 6, responding to the tariff announcements but recovered overnight. As long as the price is above that level, EBAY is risk on. EBay unveils first Watchlist trend report, names Brie Welch as resident stylist

EBay has unveiled its first Watchlist trend report revealing that nearly 40% of all clothing, shoes, and accessories sold on the platform in 2024 were listed as pre-loved, with global shoppers searching for 'vintage' more than 1,200 times per minute. The results were powered by the real-time shopping behavior of eBay 's 134 million users and more than 2.3 billion listings. To help bring the report to life, eBay has tapped New York-based stylist Brie Welch as its resident stylist. Known for her work with Katie Holmes and luxury houses like Bulgari, Givenchy, and Ferragamo, Welch will serve as the brand's fashion authority – identifying trends, offering expert commentary, and spotlighting eBay's assortment of pre-loved, branded fashion. "Since our founding 30 years ago, we've been connecting people who want to refresh their wardrobes with those ready to pass on items they no longer need," said Alexis Hoopes, VP of global fashion at eBay. "We envision a world where circularity is the norm, making it easy for brands and consumers to engage with the circular economy. We want to both power preloved fashion and empower the entire circular fashion ecosystem.' Among the findings, the report highlights Louis Vuitton as the top-performing luxury brand on eBay so far in 2025, overtaking all other designer labels in purchases from January to March. Beyond traditional luxury, eBay's data also reveals a growing interest in rising and lifestyle brands. Birkenstock led the way with a 61% increase in searches, followed by Altuzarra (+48%), Tombolo (+40%) and Bulgari (+28%). Among the standout trends in the report is the rise of 'Function First', a fresh take on utilitarian fashion. Searches for 'barrel jeans' are up 130%, and iconic brands like Wrangler and Timberland continue to dominate with an average of 37 and 20 searches per minute, respectively. 'Dyed in Dusk' explores softer, dreamlike storytelling through pastel tones and playful accessories. Butter yellow dresses surged 656%, while joyful pieces like the Seiko Half Moon Watch rose 430% in popularity. 'Well Suited' marks the return of power dressing. Fashion-savvy shoppers are embracing sharply tailored silhouettes with 'cinched blazer' searches up 209%, and 'oversized suit' queries jumping 87%. Brands leading this resurgence include Balenciaga and Miu Miu. 'Modern Bohemia' offers a romantic take on free-spirited style, with ethereal silhouettes and grounded accessories. Classic fringe bags are up 41%, and Penny Lane jackets have risen 44% in search interest. Lastly, 'Blue Hues' confirms denim's enduring appeal in a range of washes and silhouettes. This time around, it's about craftsmanship and versatility. Searches for 'jeans from Japan' are up 68%, while 'selvedge denim' climbed 46%.
