ECU jumps into annual Polar Bear Plunge Thursday
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — East Carolina University has brought back their annual Polar Bear Plunge for another year.
The first plunge was in 1997 and had 35 participants. The largest Polar Bear Plunge to take place was in 2014 with 1,200 plungers.
The tradition encourages students and staff to take a plunge in the ice-cold water of the Eakin Student Recreation Center outdoor pool. The first 650 plungers will be given a free t-shirt that was specifically designed for the event. Other activities will take place and students can get a custom Polar Bear Plunge tumbler for participation.
The fun happens on Thursday at 5:30 when registration begins. An ECU 1 Card, swimsuit and waiver are required to participate in the plunge. The waiver can be found on the ECU Rec app.
