Low-to-no-cost energy efficiency program grant terminated in Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — A grant that is used for an energy efficiency program to assist vulnerable populations in Savannah has been terminated, city officials told WSAV Saturday.
A City of Savannah spokesperson said that city staff were notified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the $1 million Environmental Justice Government-to-Government Program (EJG2G) grant has been terminated.
The grant was awarded in August of 2024 to establish a low-to-no-cost energy efficiency program. The $1 million grant also contained a workforce training component to increase the local supply of electricians.
The grant's sub-recipient, Harambee House, is a Savannah non-profit founded in 1990. The non-profit focuses on environmental justice and community empowerment through things like disaster preparedness, food security and environmental justice education, according to their website.
The city has not incurred any expenses related to this grant since there was no local match for the award, a city official said. The city is also working to review the legal justification for the termination in order to determine if the grant can be reinstated.
This is the only federal grant city staff have received a termination letter for, an official confirmed.
