The Republican made the official announcement to a crowd of supporters in front of an 'ERIN26' sign on Tuesday.
Stewart said Connecticut taxes and utility costs are too high and that the state must do better for its residents.
'We're losing businesses and talent to other states,' she said at Tuesday's press conference. 'We have no long-term vision of where, as a state, we want to go. The politicians in Hartford, we hear it day in and day out, especially now that we're in session, they shrug and exclaim, 'Well, huh, we're the land of steady habits.' It's a feeble attempt to distract from their own failures. Our state is stagnant because our leadership is stagnant.'
Gov. Ned Lamont (D-Conn.), who has yet to say if he'll run for a third term, was asked on Monday about Stewart possibly joining the race.
'She's a good friend,' he said. 'We've done an awful lot together in New Britain, and maybe we'll go there and celebrate the things we've done together.'
Lamont has said he'll likely make a decision about his political future when the legislative session ends in June.
