Bengaluru stampede: KSCA Secretary, Treasurer resign after emergency meeting
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 7 (ANI): Two top Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) officials -- secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam -- resigned from their posts during an emergency managing committee meeting held on Saturday, accepting 'moral responsibility' for stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The incident occurred during celebrations following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) maiden IPL title win and claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured. KSCA President Raghuram Bhat confirmed the development, saying that the resignations were discussed and accepted during an emergency meeting on Saturday. 'I had called an emergency managing committee meeting. Two of our members -- the secretary and treasurer -- have resigned on moral grounds. The committee has accepted their resignations. So far, nothing has come in. When the inquiry takes place, we have already told the government and the High Court that we will never shy away from anything that is there. We are ready to cooperate with the investigation,' Bhat told reporters. Speaking to ANI later, the KSCA said, 'The two resignation letters have been accepted by the managing committee. Today, it was important to accept the resignations as it has already come into the public domain.' The stampede occurred during the celebrations following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win on Wednesday, June 4. The incident sparked widespread concern regarding crowd management and safety arrangements at major public events. The stampede left 11 people dead and several others injured. Communicating to KSCA on Friday night, both Shankar and Jairam wrote as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, 'Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, and though our role was very limited, but owing moral responsibility, we wish to state that last night we have tendered our resignation to our respective posts as secretary and treasurer of the KSCA.' The Bengaluru Police also filed a first information report (FIR) against the popular IPL franchise on Thursday, as per ESPNCricinfo. The police have said that RCB was not given permission to conduct the event at the stadium. RCB has been listed as the first accused in the FIR, along with DNA Entertainment, the franchise's event partners, and the KSCA, which is in control of the stadium. On Friday, the cops also confirmed the arrest of RCB's marketing and revenue head Nikhil Sosale, while acting on directives of newly appointed police commissioner SK Singh, who took over after his predecessor was removed by the chief minister Siddaramaiah after the incident. Later that day, a writ petition was filed by KSCA, arguing that the FIR against them was a move made under pressure of state government by the police and hence a 'knee-jerk' reaction. KSCA said that the stampede was caused due to an unexpected crowd surge and no intent or motive could be attributed to the petitioners. They also stressed that the crowd management was a responsibility which lied with the franchise's management, event organisers and the police. The council defending the state's cricket governing body also raised concerns about Sosale's arrest, claiming that it indicated a targeted approach. Sosale also approached the Karnataka High Court and challenged his arrest, as per Bar and Bench, an Indian legal news platform. RCB is yet to issue an official statement on Sosale's arrest, though on Thursday, they announced compensation worth Rs 10 lakh for the family of each deceased and also pledged to cover the medical expenses of those who sustained injuries. Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam have resigned from their posts, owing moral responsibility for the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday, hours after the Karnataka High Court granted them protection from police arrests. In a letter to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, they said they wished to own moral responsibility though their role was very limited. The stampede and congestion near the stadium led to the death of 11 cricket fans and injuries to scores of others. The resignations followed the state government launching a crackdown on the agencies involved in organising the felicitation events at the Chinnaswamy stadium after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the first time. On Thursday, chief minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of senior executives of RCB, KSCA and event manager DNA Entertainment Network. Shankar and Jairam, along with Bhat, moved the High Court on Friday after the police charged the three organisations with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In their petition, the KSCA office bearers said the association was only a governing body of cricket in Karnataka with affiliation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has nothing to do with IPL events and Wednesday's celebrations were organized by RCB franchise and managed by its vendor DNA Entertainment Network, they argued. KSCA's role was limited to making the stadium and its infrastructure available to RCB and DNA. The police, the petitioners alleged, registered the FIR against them under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry.

The stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium occurred on Wednesday evening, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. Eleven people died and 56 were injured in the incident. In the aftermath, a case was registered at Cubbon Park Police Station, and the state government appointed a one-member inquiry commission led by retired High Court judge Justice John Michael D'Cunha to conduct an enquiry into the tragedy. The high court has also taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and has asked the state to file a status report. That matter will be heard on June 10.

Top KSCA officials resign amid probe into stampede at RCB IPL title celebration
The Bengaluru stampede during the RCB victory celebrations outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium that killed 11 people has caused a major upheaval in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) as A Shankar and E S Jairam have resigned from their respective posts as secretary and treasurer of the cricketing body. The duo took moral responsibility for the tragedy that unfolded on Wednesday amid a probe into the incident. Shankar and Jairam said they had submitted their resignations on Thursday night to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat. "Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, and though our role was very limited, we wish to state that we have tendered our resignation to our respective posts as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association," the joint statement read. Bhat and the two officials who resigned had submitted to the Karnataka high court that the association was not responsible for gate and crowd management. The submission added that they had sought permission to hold RCB IPL celebrations at Vidhan Soudha. Several Police officials, including Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, were suspended in the aftermath of the tragedy. The Bengaluru stampede occurred after the felicitation of the players who won RCB's first-ever IPL title. The initial felicitation was organised at the Vidhan Soudha, and it passed off without any major glitch. Chaos erupted outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where lakhs converged following RCB's social media invitation asking fans to attend a ceremony there. The invite was eventually deleted. A planned victory parade had to be cancelled, but the function inside the stadium proceeded despite the tragic death of 11 fans. The Karnataka government said that it had asked the organisers to wrap up the program in 10 minutes after learning about the deaths, which they obliged. FIR has been registered in the case, and four officials from RCB and the event management company DNA were arrested on Friday, including RCB marketing head Nikhil Sosale. A complaint was also registered against Virat Kohli, but police sources said no FIR has been registered so far. The complainant, social activist HM Venkatesh, alleged Kohli was promoting 'gambling through IPL,' claiming it incited the large crowd that triggered the tragedy.
