UK-EU summit: Brussels hails deal as 'new chapter' - but much is yet to be written
"We're turning a page," EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday after the bloc's first summit with the UK since Brexit. "We're opening a new chapter."It is not the first page that has been turned in the post-Brexit period, but it is the most two sides have now struck a deal that covers fishing, trade, defence, energy and strengthening ties in a number of policy areas that are still up for Brussels, this negotiation was a chance to bring Britain – a major defence power – closer in a time of geopolitical to address what some member states see as irritating hangovers from years, there was a "don't touch it" mentality when it came to taking a broad look at the Brexit settlement, according to one EU all involved "too much politics" with fears it could all "go wrong."Remember, up until the 2023 Windsor Framework agreement, London and Brussels were bogged down in a protracted dispute over trade arrangements for Northern in 2024, a new government won power in the UK - the more EU-friendly Labour in Brussels had long voiced exasperation – even distrust – with prior Conservative administrations, a party with a vocal Brexit-backing Brexit supporters are now castigating a deal that they say amounts to a sell-out of sovereignty to EU new UK-EU deal at a glanceDiplomats in Brussels, however, insist that this is a "normalisation" of relations between neighbours who still look at the world in a broadly similar being said, there was evident satisfaction in EU circles about locking in fishing quotas for 12 I checked with one diplomat about that detail, they initially replied with a smiley face said: "The deal is balanced—arguably with favourable terms for the EU—and simply shows that splendid isolation is not an option in today's climate."Of course, the EU will want to highlight its "wins" in a negotiation with a former member state who badly shook the bloc by coastal countries - notably France – will be happy at not having to endure annual fish quota talks, for coastal states, notably France, did not want to endure annual was, in the end I'm told, quid pro quo. The EU got its fishing deal. In return, it'll be easier for UK businesses to export agri-food products – although that element hasn't been yet to be ironed out are the plans for youth mobility – which would allow young people to study or work more easily between Britain and the was a particularly important goal for countries like Germany, anxious to win better access to an English-speaking country with prestigious key point for Berlin was the new defence and security full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Donald Trump's unpredictable White House have ripped up the rules on European has been something of a healer – but the events of recent years have also created a sense of ties with Britain, which remains a major defence player, is a no-brainer – now more than ever – for mainland Europe as it tries to scale up investment and like Germany – which only recently hit the 2% Nato spending target – are acutely aware that they have been left exposed by the dramatic global developments of recent of course, most of this deal is an agreement in principle; a statement of intent on issues also ranging across cyber security, energy and migration."I think it's a good step," another EU diplomat told me. "It's good to test the waters for practical cooperation and what can be done. Let's take it from there."There is still a watchful wariness in Brussels about Britain's fraught and divisive debate about relations with the the specifics, which have yet to be negotiated, could stir up further political storms whether that's on political compromises or "reset" may not change the big fundamentals of Brexit - the UK remains out of the single market and customs union- but it does commit London and Brussels to doing a lot more talking as they try to fill the many gaps that lie within this long list of means there will be a greater volume of diplomatic traffic between the UK and the EU going more business with Brussels inevitably means doing more talking. In that regard, today is just the beginning.

Pahalgam probe revealed 'communication nodes' of terrorists with Pakistani masterminds
The Ministry of External Affairs told a parliamentary committee that the initial probe into the Pahalgam terror attack has revealed " communication nodes " of terrorists with their "masterminds in Pakistan". The attack has "footprints and tracks" similar to previous attacks claimed by The Resistance Front, the ministry said in a presentation, adding the terror organisation is just another name of designated terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Pakistan's track record as a terror sanctuary is well established, rooted in solid facts and evidence, it said. The ministry also said Pakistan blames India for the killings of some individuals, labelled as extra-judicial and extra-territorial by the neighbouring country, on its soil even though its allegations are devoid of any facts or evidence. UN-designated terrorists roam freely in Pakistan and continue to incite violence against India, the ministry said in its presentation to the Standing Committee on External Affairs headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. Live Events The Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes early on May 7 at nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold of Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba's Muridke base. The strikes were conducted under Operation Sindoor two weeks after the execution-style killing of 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. Over 100 terrorists, including high-value targets such as Yusuf Azhar, Abdul Malik Rauf and Mudasir Ahmed, were eliminated during Operation Sindoor, according to the Indian military. India and Pakistan reached an agreement on May 10 to halt military actions after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes. Following the pause, the Union government formed seven delegations comprising 51 political leaders, parliamentarians and former ministers cutting across party lines who will travel to world capitals to put across India's resolve to tackle terrorism.

'Punched, choked, dragged': Singer testifies against Sean 'Diddy' Combs, reveals chilling details on how he abused his girlfriend
The trial of hip-hop mogul Sean 'Diddy' Combs resumed Monday in a Manhattan federal court with testimony from singer Dawn Richard, who described witnessing violent abuse against Combs' longtime girlfriend and said the music executive threatened to kill her if she spoke out. Richard told the jury that the day after she saw Combs attack Cassie, the Bad Boy Records founder threatened her and another woman who witnessed the incident, warning they 'could go missing' if they revealed what happened. When asked by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mitzi Steiner what the phrase meant to her, Richard said, 'That we could die.' Prosecutors say Combs exploited his power in the entertainment industry to abuse women through threats and violence, including Cassie. Combs has pleaded not guilty, with his defense team arguing that evidence of domestic violence does not prove the federal crimes alleged. During four days on the stand last week, Cassie described the relationship as one marked by weekly, drug-fueled 'freak-offs' involving male sex workers that left her physically and emotionally drained, crushing her music career ambitions. Live Events Richard, who performed alongside Combs in the group Diddy – Dirty Money, testified she witnessed multiple violent episodes. She recounted a 2009 incident at Combs' home studio where she and another woman saw him strike Cassie 'on the head and beat her on the ground.' She said Combs attempted to hit Cassie with a skillet, but Cassie deflected the blow. When asked how often she saw Combs physically abuse Cassie, Richard answered, 'Frequently.' She detailed seeing Combs punch, choke, drag, slap, and kick Cassie. She added, 'He would punch her, choke her, drag her, slap her in the mouth. I saw him kick her, punch her in the stomach.' She also described an episode in a restaurant where Combs punched Cassie in the stomach during an argument. According to Richard, Cassie hid her injuries—bruises on her face, eyes, lip, arms, and knees—using makeup, clothing, and sunglasses. She explained that the beatings sometimes occurred if Cassie spoke up or expressed an opinion, but other times 'it could be random. We wouldn't even know where it came from.' Richard also testified that Combs' staff, including bodyguards, witnessed the violence but did not intervene. 'They wouldn't react. They wouldn't do anything,' she said. The trial continues as prosecutors present further evidence of the alleged exploitation and abuse.

Scottish fishermen fear new EU trade agreement could have a catch
It's 9am in Peterhead, and most business has already been done for the day. Boxes of fish have been unloaded and sold at the largest white fish market in Europe, and the boats don't hang around. They're refuelled, the hold is refilled with ice, and then they're I needed to walk at a brisk pace to speak to skippers before they headed back to sea. On Monday, a summit between the UK and the EU is taking place in London, and fishing rights are on the agenda. Both sides have abided by the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement since Brexit five years the agreement, 25% of the existing EU quota in UK waters has been transferred to the British fleet over a five-and-a-half-year period, which ends in June next the clock ticks down on the current arrangement, fishermen are taking stock of what a new deal could look Milne, a former skipper and chairman of the Scottish White Fish Producers Association, said: 'We've had a bit of stability created with this current arrangement. The guys have just gotten on with it because at least we know what's been happening.'We could negotiate annually going forward, but if it's a five-year deal the EU want, they're going to have to pay for it, they won't get it for free.'Reports suggest the UK could trade some of its fishing rights for a multibillion-pound defence deal with the EU and that a four-year deal could be Cabinet Office has tried to dispel the rumours, but they are already causing concern within the fishing fleet.A short drive away in Fraserburgh, William Reid is making last-minute tweaks on his new said: 'If we're linked in with a defence deal, that would be a disaster for the fishing fleet.'I campaigned for Brexit, but nothing has improved. We've not felt the benefit.'With the quotas, there are more restrictions, and we can't get any youth back into the sector, which is the biggest problem, as there's no confidence in the sector.'There was initially hope that Brexit would allow UK boats to increase their quotas, taking a greater share of fish than they did some fishermen fear they'll be able to catch less, and are concerned about the knock-on effect for Scotland's coastal have raised safety concerns, arguing there have already been incidents of foreign boats coming dangerously close to Scottish boats while they're trawling. As we enter the re-negotiation period, a Cabinet Office spokesperson added: 'We will protect the interests of our fishers and fulfil our international commitments to protect the marine environment.' The Scottish Government have not been invited to next week's Mairi Gougeon, cabinet secretary for rural affairs, said it was essential 'that we see an outcome that delivers benefits to our entire seafood sector'.
