Top western Mass. water systems awarded by MassDEP
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Several water systems and operators in western Massachusetts received awards from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) in recognition of excellent public service and water supply. MassDEP announced on Friday that 49 public water systems, four certified operators, and one childcare center advocate in the state were given awards for their service in 2024. These systems were recognized for having no violations or compliance issues and overall outstanding water service. Governor Healey reveals policy plan for Massachusetts older adults 'Every day, dedicated water suppliers and professionals work hard to ensure millions of Massachusetts residents have access to clean, safe drinking water,' said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper. 'Water is our most vital resource. These highly skilled professionals are committed to protecting it from pollution, advancing conservation efforts, and building the infrastructure needed to meet our future needs.' The 2025 Public Water System Award Recipients and Honorable Mentions were divided into categories based on the size of the community system, while some received individual awards. Among the Small Community Systems, award recipients from western Mass. included Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, Hampden Housing Authority, and the Sunderland Water District. The South Hadley Fire District #2 Water Department received an award in the Medium and Large Community Systems Category. MassDEP also commended four water systems and operators representing each region of the state for their top performance in providing clean and safe water to the community. In the Western Region, the West Springfield DPW Water Division received Regional Recognition for its actions in identifying and resolving a contamination issue in July 2024. The West Springfield DPW had experienced a backflow incident and identified an oily sheen in public drinking water, which could indicate potentially unsafe drinking conditions. The DPW immediately informed MassDEP and isolated the affected area. They then performed water quality samples, flushed lines to prevent contaminated water from reaching customers, and ensured that a backflow device was installed, all within 48 hours of identifying the issue. Anthony Lastowski was the recipient of the Distinguished Operator Award in the Western Region. More information on the Public Water System Awards can be found at WWLP-22News, an NBC affiliate, began broadcasting in March 1953 to provide local news, network, syndicated, and local programming to western Massachusetts. King Abdullah modeled Jordan school after one in MA Abdullah's time at Deerfield Academy also provided the blueprint for his school in Jordan, King's Academy, according to The Deerfield Scroll. King's Academy is a boarding school in Madaba, Jordan, that opened in 2007. On the school's website, it says Abdullah's time at Deerfield Academy "is critical to our story." "The formative experience that he had there, and the memory of it that he took away, allowed him to imagine what a Jordanian boarding school might do for boys and girls across the Middle East," the website says. Deerfield Academy's current head of school, John P.N. Austin, also served as headmaster at King's Academy before returning to Massachusetts.
