Former County Durham funeral home could be transformed into takeaway

A former County Durham funeral directors could become a takeaway after plans were submitted to the council. The site could go from selling coffins to kebabs after the application was submitted to transform a the old funeral home on Seaside Lane, Easington Colliery, into a hot food takeaway and delivery service. The building, which has been empty since January 2020, was previously home to Kevin Hepworth Funeral Directors. The application was made by Mr. Ali Bahary, through his agent Dr. Anton Lang MRTPI of Anton Lang Planning Services Ltd. Proposals include the installation of an extraction system with external ducts to be positioned at the rear of the building. The front of the building will not be altered, except for repair and repainting, and new signage expected. Mr Bahary plans to open the takeaway from at least 11am to 11pm, ideally extending to 2am, or earlier for breakfast service. If approved, the new takeaway is expected to create two full-time and two part-time jobs.
