Last-second addition Cox Pruette making most of Epson Tour start in Michigan

Last-second addition Cox Pruette making most of Epson Tour start in Michigan BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - The Battle Creek Country Club was a friendly host, allowing a lot of good scores, as the FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship came to town for a 12th time, starting Friday, June 6. Out of the 144-player field, 58 broke par for the opening day, and 15 carded rounds of 68 or better. The top of the leaderboard was crowded, with Carley Cox Pruette, Samantha Vodry, and Maddie Szeryk all tied at the top after turning in 6-under rounds to start their tournaments. The FireKeepers event is part of the EPSON Tour - the official qualifying tour of the LPGA Tour. Locally, Battle Creek's Amiyah Gibson shot a 12-over 84 in the first round. The Lakeview high schooler entered the tournament as an amateur on a sponsor's exemption. Gibson will tee off for round two at 2:20 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. MORE: Battle Creek's Gibson will golf against pros at a course her grandpa wasn't allowed to play Cox Pruette, who played collegiately at East Carolina University, found out she was in the tournament just 24 hours before she teed off, making her the last player in the field for the week. The 28-year-old has good memories and experience at Battle Creek Country Club, making her first professional start at the course. The experience paid off as Cox Pruette made her way around bogey-free, adding six birdies to the card. Because of her ranking on the priority list, she has only played in one event prior to this week and is now playing with house money. She was 1 over through her first 15 holes on Saturday. 'I just kind of feel at home on the course, and that's a weird thing to say,' said Cox Pruette. 'Just got some good memories here, and I've made some good connections and friends here. So, it's always good to return back, and yeah, I just love the course. It just fits my eye well, so it definitely helps when you get that last-minute call.' ECU's industrial technology transfer program nationally recognized

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The East Carolina University Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology (BSTI) program received accolades for their transfer program. The BSTI's transfer program has had success in helping community college transfer students get a bachelor's degree at a rate 10% higher than the national average. The Transfer Playbook, created by the Aspen Institute and Community College Research Center, gives credit to advising staff, online classes, and transfer student experiences as some of the reasons why the program is so successful, calling it a model for other four-year institutions to follow. 'We've set a high bar for ourselves, and it's both humbling and inspiring to be recognized as an institution that's doing it right,' Associate Professor and BSIT Program Coordinator, Dr. David Batts said. 'But if I'm being honest, the greatest pride doesn't come from accolades. It comes from our students. Talking with them at graduation, hearing their stories, that's where the real impact lives — stories like the single mother who returned to school to build a better future for her family or the father who completed his degree to set an example for his children.' The BSIT program offers a four-year degree completion for students who already have a two-year Associate in Applied Sciences (AAS) degree, since they need a bachelor's degree to qualify for leadership roles. The program also offers seven-degree concentrations including, bioprocess manufacturing, distribution and logistics, industrial management, industrial engineering technology, and information and cybersecurity technology. Some of these classes can even be taken online or in-person so students don't have to leave their hometowns, jobs, or families. 'In the end, it's always about the students — who they become, what they overcome and how we've helped them along the way. That's the legacy we're most proud of,'' Dr. David Batts said. Visit the BSIT website for more information on the program. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

ECU Celebrates 2025 Spring graduation

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT)– Thousands of graduates accompanied by their families and friends celebrated East Carolina University's Spring graduation ceremony on Friday, May 9th at Dowdy-Ficklen stadium. Greenville native and ECU alumnus, John May '93, served as the keynote speaker for the commencement ceremony. May is the founder and managing partner of CORE Industrial Partners, a private equity firm with approximately $2 billion in assets under management. Since its founding in 2017, CORE has become one of the fastest-growing firms in the industry, investing exclusively in lower middle-market manufacturing, industrial technology and industrial services businesses. The firm has offices in Chicago, Austin, Texas, and Cleveland. May spoke about leading with your faith, believing in yourself, working hard, and loving those that love you. He said these are all crucial in life and have helped get him where he is today. Some pirate graduates are staying in Greenville after graduation whether it be working for ECU, a hotel in Greenville, or a remote small business. No matter where the class of 2025 goes, they will have the wind of pirate nation in their sails. 'I think that it's very surreal for me because I'm neurodiverse so I have five learning disabilities and to be able to graduate for my master's degree when people predicted that I wouldn't have gone to college, it's a really big deal to me and my family,' Lydia Pinto, earning her Masters of Recreation Sciences said. 'Pirate nation has given me a wealth of opportunity, study abroad, getting the chance to work for the university full time now and then just meeting so many wonderful people along the way. My biggest piece of advice is networking all the way through. Talk to as many people as you can. Pirate Nation runs deep, and the purple and gold run deep,' Meaghan Skelly, earning her Master of Arts and Strategic Communication said. 'I'd like to thank my mom and my dad, they helped me through school and life,' Justin Livernois, earning his bachelor's degree in communications said. More commencement ceremonies are taking place throughout the day Friday, and into Saturday for the individual colleges and majors. You can find more information on this year's commencement and graduates in the video above or here. Don't miss out on other University Commencement Ceremonies this weekend including UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, and Pitt Community College. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
