Olana Lynn 'Tick' Hedrick-Sheaffer, 75, of Altoona, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2025. She was born in Fairmont, a daughter of the late Olan G. 'Oley' Hedrick and Yvonne Little married Albert A. Sheaffer July 15, are her husband, Al; sister, Jan Bachowski (Gary) of Sarasota, Fla.; niece, Ashley Reinhold (Chris) and their children, Taylor, Kai and Lilly; nephew, G. Jake Bachowski (Gianna) and their children, Luna, Capri and Olan; cousin, David Little (Marsha); Jeffrey and Cathy Bathgate (sister-in-law) and their children, Andy, Stacey and Stephanie, and their families in Mechanicsburg, Pa.; special friends: Chris and Mickey Sisto and dog, Kaley of Hollidaysburg, Pa.; Becky Snyder in West Virginia; Rhonda Shawley and family of Hollidaysburg; Fredina Ingold and family of State College, Pa.; Donna Tremmel of Duncansville, Pa.; Darren and Cindy Kester of Huntingdon, Pa. and family; and Kristen Martin and Pam was a 1967 graduate of East Fairmont High School. She earned her B.S. in 1971, M.S. in 1973 and graduated with her M.S. in Physical Education and Sport Science respectively from West Virginia University. She earned a National Athletic Training Certification in was an instructor in kinesiology at Penn State Altoona for 35 years (retired in 2009). She was the women's volleyball coach for 28 years, the men's club volleyball coach for six years and the women's tennis and basketball coach for one teams earned 13 Commonwealth Campus titles, eight Western PA Conference titles and four PA State Conference was Conference Coach of the Year 11 times, with a 505-175 record in her 1995 volleyball team was inducted into the inaugural Penn State Altoona Athletics Hall of Fame in was a member of the Irvin Stewart Society and a life member of the WVU Alumni Society. In 2017, she was inducted into the WVU College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honorary, a member of the Ivyside Society of Penn State Altoona and a 1997 recipient of the Robert J. Scannell Roll of Honor award for outstanding service to the Commonwealth Education System in Recreation and Sports at Penn State 2023, she was inducted into the Penn State Altoona Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of was a member of the National Athletic Training Association for 25 years, a member of the American Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance for more than 30 years and a volunteer for the American Red Cross for more than 20 her retirement years, Tick was a member of Scotch Valley Country Club and enjoyed traveling with her husband, was a member of Altoona First Church of the Brethren, 510 Fifth Street, Altoona, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, with the Rev. Gary Koontz officiating.A Celebration of Life is planned to be held at a future time. Arrangements are by Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona.

Cecilia Jean Graves, 69, of Morgantown, passed away in her home Monday, May 12, was the daughter of James and Frances Graves of loved learning and dedicated her life to inspiring that same love of learning in others. She graduated salutatorian of East Fairmont High School Class of '74, obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communications from Fairmont State College, and was part of the 1978 championship debate team at the Liberty Bell Debate Tournament defeating Harvard and the Naval Academy in the final rounds. After earning a master's degree from Ohio University, she was a professor and coached elite intercollegiate debate teams at James Madison University, and later pursued a PhD at the University of to Morgantown, Cecilia served as an academic mentor for the West Virginia University football team, providing academic support and guidance to student was a small business owner, operating The Needlecraft Barn in downtown Morgantown, where she sold high quality fiber arts supplies and offered classes in beginner to advanced needlework techniques. She was a member of the Morgantown Fiber Guild and a highly accomplished knitter.A deep commitment rooted in faith with the Catholic church guided Cecilia to be an outspoken advocate of social justice and animal welfare issues. She was an avid reader, rarely seen without a book in her hand, and an ardent supporter of public libraries and literacy. She loved all animals, providing refuge for many strays over the years. Cecilia was a guardian of the natural world and shared her love of nature with everyone she met, encouraging and inspiring friends and family to seek out meaningful connections to the earth. She especially loved was preceded in death by her is survived by her mother; siblings, Jim Graves, Cathy Meyer, and Cyndy Graves; brother-in-law Dave Hough; along with six nieces and nephews, a grandniece and grandnephew. All were very special to her.A graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 30, at Beverly Hills Cemetery. Friends and family are welcome to attend. Fairmont State graduate students complete Zen Garden community project

FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — Two Fairmont State graduate students have taken what they've learned in the classroom and applied it outside for everyone to enjoy. Madison Corbin and Caden Moore celebrated the completion of their community project, a Zen Garden, with a ribbon cutting at Morris Park in Fairmont Thursday morning. The project was completed in collaboration with the city of Fairmont and Morris Park. Corbin was happy to have had the hands on experience. 'This project, it allowed us to go beyond the book, go beyond the textbook,' Corbin said. 'So, it allowed us to show this project in real life and get hands on experience.' Morgantown student to compete in Scripps National Spelling Bee Moore was also grateful for the experience and the opportunity to give back to the community. 'It just offers a peaceful space, tranquility. Just somewhere to come and relax and just get away from work.' Broadband summit held for students at East Fairmont High School

FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — More than 100 ninth and tenth-grade students from across Marion County attended East Fairmont High School on Wednesday for the inaugural Broadband Summit. The event was the first of its kind in West Virginia and gave students a chance to learn about career opportunities in things like broadband, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence from professionals in the field, including those who work in the federal government. Upshur Leadership graduating class holds Community Skills Share event 'Not every student is intended to go to college, nor should they be forced into that pathway. And so today, during this collaboration, they're talking about careers that are available if a student explores a career technical education certification or a college degree,' Marion County Superintendent Donna Heston said.
