East Hartford officials alert residents as ICE officials spotted entering home

Immigration officials were at a home in East Hartford over the weekend amidst a mass deportation plan being carried out around the nation. Authorities with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were seen entering a home Sunday, according to a Facebook post from the Town of East Hartford. Officer Marc Caruso of the East Hartford Police Department said ICE officials notified police they would be in town, though they did not request any assistance. Caruso said he was not aware if anyone was taken into custody and deferred further comment to ICE. 'We understand there has been a lot of concern, questions, and alerts circulating in our community recently,' town officials wrote on Facebook. 'It's more important than ever to stay informed.' The post also encouraged individuals to know their rights if they are approached by ICE officials. 'If ICE approaches you or your home, you have the right to remain silent and refuse to sign anything without speaking to a lawyer,' town officials wrote. 'ICE cannot enter your home without a valid warrant signed by a judge. Always ask to see it.' 'Everyone, regardless of their status, has rights under the Constitution,' the post stated. ICE's presence comes amidst a mass deportation plan announced by President Donald J. Trump being carried out across the country. A spokesperson for ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
