Baker Lake man joins ranks of volunteers for Easter Games

Rene Mautaritnaak of Baker Lake is starting to make up for lost time. Mautaritnaak decided to lend his volunteer services to the hamlet during the Easter Games this past weekend and will be volunteering again during the Hamlet Days celebrations from May 5 to May 10. Mautaritnaak said he was happy to see everyone enjoying their time and having fun at the Easter Games. The games offered something for everyone, he said, with categories of Elders' games, children's games and adult games all being offered. 'We gave out all different cash prizes to the winners of the different categories, with our biggest cash prize being $125,' said Mautaritnaak. 'I really enjoyed setting up the games and I had some help. There were four of us altogether and it took us about seven hours to look after everything. 'I had people tell me the games were fun and they had a great time. It felt good to hear that and know our work was appreciated.' Mautaritnaak said he was excited to volunteer for the Easter Games for the first time. He said he donated his time this year because he wanted to be out among the public and helping out. 'I'm looking forward to volunteering again next month for Hamlet Days. 'Hamlet Days are way different from the Easter Games. There's going to be five full days of games, so we have to have a lot more things on the go, 'I'm looking forward to gaining the experience from both events, and volunteering is something I think I'll stick with. 'I really enjoyed the Easter Games and I'm sure I'll enjoy Hamlet Days next month too.'

Mayor's Easter Games: ‘For the people and where talent emerges'

What began as a bold initiative by the mayor's office has blossomed into one of Mogale City Local Municipality's (MCLM) most vibrant annual traditions. • Read initial article here: Countdown to mayor's Easter Games begins MCLM communications officer Tendani Shavhani said the Mayor's Easter Games were first launched in 2016 as the Mayor's Cup, yet the event has grown so significantly in scope and popularity that it is now fondly known as the people's' Mayor's Easter Games. 'More than just a sports tournament, the games have become a celebration of township pride, youth talent, and social cohesion. Led by Executive Mayor Lucky Sele, the 2025 edition saw hundreds of young athletes – boys and girls – compete across a range of sports including junior football [for U15s and U17s], women's football, senior and masters' divisions and netball [for U13s, U15s and U19s],' she explained. She added that the games have earned a reputation as a launchpad for future sports stars, with past participants like Lucky Baloyi and Sipho Zwane proving their worth. For many young players, it's their first opportunity to shine on a meaningful stage. This year brought notable growth, more teams, expanded age divisions and increased prize money. 'Every team received full kits, highlighting the event's commitment to fairness, inclusion and community pride. 'Kicking off with preliminary rounds on April 12 to 13 and culminating over the Easter weekend, the tournament was full of energy with over 30 matches and 50 goals scored in the opening days alone. The Munsieville Sports Complex, better known as Chiptown's Pride, hosted the thrilling final rounds, drawing crowds from across the West Rand,' she said. Adding star power to the event was South African soccer icon Simphiwe 'Shabba' Tshabalala, who inspired players and fans alike with his presence and message – true talent thrives at a grassroots level. The deputy minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Honourable Peace Mabe, also praised the games as a model of how sport can foster development and unity. Tendani continued beyond the competition, the games offered a vital community platform. In a time of ongoing social issues like substance abuse and youth unemployment, they provided a safe and uplifting space that brought people together and encouraged positive change. 'As medals were awarded and celebrations erupted, it was clear that the Mayor's Easter Games had once again fulfilled their mission: Uniting communities, showcasing future stars, and proving that the heart of South African sport beats strong in Krugersdorp,' she concluded.
