Young's Jersey Dairy switching to plastic eggs for Easter hunt
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A local farm is breaking more than 40 years of tradition due to the community demand for eggs.
Young's Jersey Dairy annually hid over 10,000 real, hand-dyed eggs on the farm for its Easter Sunday Egg Hunt. This year, it is taking a temporary detour.
For the first time ever, the farm will use plastic eggs instead. Each egg will have a ticket for a free ride on Cowtherine's Carousel, redeemable on any visit.
Lawmakers look for ways to drop the price of eggs
When asked about the choice to change, John Young, the farm's CIEIO, joked about having the farm's mascot stand guard.
'We thought about having Barnabe guard our 10,000 real eggs 24 hours a day, but this seemed like a better approach,' said Young. 'While we know our classic hard-boiled eggs are our tradition, we feel this is the best choice this year.'
This year's hunt will be on Sunday, April 20. It will have three sections:
2 p.m. for kids ages 4 and under.
2:20 p.m. for kids ages 5 to 7.
2:40 p.m. for kids ages 8 to 10.
Instead of buying the 10,000 eggs to hard boil, the farm will give money to charity: $1,500 to The Foodbank in Dayton and $1,500 to Second Harvest Food Bank in Springfield.
Scouts lead community project for local foodbank
Attendees can meet partners from the food banks to learn about supporting others in the community year-round. Barnabe will be available for photos.
The farm expects to bring back the hard-boiled eggs for the 2026 hunt.
