Capitals and Canadiens fined $25K each as their 1st-round series gets increasingly feisty
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — From big hits to post-whistle scrums and even shenanigans during pregame warmups, things are getting increasingly testy in the first-round playoff series between the Washington Capitals and the Montreal Canadiens. Each team was fined $25,000 for players' antics during warmups prior to Game 4 on Sunday night . Washington's Dylan McIlrath and Montreal's Arber Xhekaj also got fined the $3,385 maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement for unsportsmanlike conduct. It's the second set of fines in the series after Capitals forward Tom Wilson and Canadiens forward Josh Anderson were docked $5,000 apiece for their fight at the end of the second period in Game 3 on Friday night that spilled onto the visiting bench. The teams have combined for 37 penalties through four games, with the hostilities ramping up. 'That happens in every series, especially the first round,' Montreal's Brendan Gallagher said on a video call with reporters Monday. 'Teams are so excited to be where they are, and you're starting your journey off. I think every playoff that I've been a part of, the first round is usually the most physical, the most emotional and this one's no different. I think both sides have players that are competing. That's just a part of it.' It's also playing out as a bit of a war of words, with Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis expressing frustration about the officiating. He told reporters after his team's Game 4 defeat, 'It's hard to watch some of these calls.' When asked about St. Louis' comments and the refereeing in general, Gallagher said he believed he and his teammates were handling it well for the most part. 'It hasn't gone our way,' Gallagher said. 'That goes without saying. But that's for them to control. There's certain things that's in the league's control and have faith that it'll start to flip and they'll take care of it.' The Canadiens have had 13 power plays to the Capitals' 10 and have outscored them 5-1 in those situations. Washington coach Spencer Carbery brushed off St. Louis' criticism having any kind of impact on how the rest of the series is called. 'We'll go out and do everything we can to earn power plays and make sure we're not taking penalties and however the officials call the game, we'll adapt and move on and make sure that we're focused on what we're doing on the ice,' said Carbery, who is expected to be a finalist for the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year. 'It doesn't affect anything I do or we do. The refs are the refs, and officiating I don't even bother (with). If you get wrapped up in that stuff, for me, it's counterproductive. You're going to get some calls. You're not going to get some calls.' Sparked by a big hit by Wilson on Alexandre Carrier, the Capitals scored twice on Canadiens backup goaltender Jakub Dobes in the third period to win Game 4 and take a 3-1 series lead. Game 5 is Wednesday night in Washington, with the chance the home team and top seed in the Eastern Conference gets valuable forward Aliaksei Protas back after missing the past three weeks with a skate cut to his left foot. 'He's right there,' Carbery said. 'He's full practice. He's ready to roll. We'll see if he gets into Game 5.' ___ AP NHL playoffs: and

Giannis Antetokounmpo recorded 28 points, 15 rebounds and six assists for the fifth-seeded Bucks. Kevin Porter Jr. added 23 points and fellow reserve Bobby Portis added 14 for Milwaukee. Bucks star Damian Lillard exited midway through the first quarter with a potentially serious lower left leg injury. Timberwolves 116, Lakers 113 Anthony Edwards scored 43 points on 12-for-23 shooting, and Minnesota rallied late for a win over Los Angeles in Game 4 of their Western Conference quarterfinals series in Minneapolis. Edwards grabbed nine rebounds and dished six assists for the Timberwolves, who seized a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Julius Randle scored 25 points, and Jaden McDaniels recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Knicks 94, Pistons 93 Jalen Brunson scored 32 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter after injuring his ankle, and Karl-Anthony Towns added 27 to lead visiting New York to a victory over Detroit in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. Josh Hart added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who claimed a 3-1 series lead and can close out the best-of-seven series Tuesday in New York. The Knicks took a 94-93 lead on Towns' 3-pointer with 47 seconds to go. Detroit's Tim Hardaway Jr. appeared to be fouled on his missed 3-point attempt as time expired but no call was made on Hart for banging shoulders with Hardaway. Crew chief David Guthrie later told a pool reporter that the officials missed the call. Cade Cunningham led the way with 25 points and Tobias Harris added 18 for Detroit, which tied an NBA record with its ninth straight postseason loss at home. The Philadelphia 76ers set the mark from 1968-71. The Pistons have not won a home playoff game since May 2008. Celtics 107, Magic 98 Jayson Tatum collected game highs of 37 points and 14 rebounds to lead Boston past host Orlando in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. The second-seeded Celtics made 30 of their 32 free-throw attempts as they took a 3-1 edge in the best-of-seven series. Four of Boston's five starters scored at least 18 points. Jaylen Brown had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Kristaps Porzingis tossed in 19 points and Derrick White finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Paolo Banchero led seventh-seeded Orlando with 31 points. Franz Wagner finished with 24 points, six rebounds and seven assists, and Wendell Carter Jr. supplied nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved

📈 MLS Power Rankings: New leaders emerge as Miami slip
We're back with another edition of the MLS power rankings after a fascinating weekend of action around the league. We saw upsets, blowouts, and plenty more drama. Let's dig into the top-10. 10. Portland Timbers (🆕) 📸 Kylie Graham-Imagn Images Advertisement The Timbers crack the top-10 for the first time season, and rightly so. Phil Neville's side have seemingly discovered the balance between defense and attack that has been missing since the start of his tenure. After winning a six-goal thriller in Kansas City on Sunday, the Cascadia club have now secured all three points in three of their last four MLS games to sneakily move into a pearly fourth-place in the west. 9. Orlando City (no movement) 📸 Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Orlando City have sputtered as of late after starting the season in a rich vein of form in front of goal. Two successive goalless draws leaves a sour taste in the mouth of Orlando fans, but defensive improvements can't be scoffed at. Advertisement The trick now is to have the attack and the defense show up on the same day! When that happens, they will be a force. 8. Philadelphia Union (👎) 📸 Mark Smith-Imagn Images The Union looked to for all the world to be an all-conquering force in the opening few weeks of the season, but a bucket of cold water has been dumped on Bradley Carnell's side as of late. And due to falling to NYCFC in Queens on Saturday, the Union have now failed to win in three straight games after winning three of their first of four. 7. LAFC (👍) 📸 Alex Gallardo-Imagn Images With Concacaf Champions Cup duties now squarely in the rearview mirror, LAFC can focus on domestic proceedings. It has been clear as of late that it is not a squad built to compete on multiple fronts, but a win over San Jose Saturday evening is a great first step in rejoining the conversation out west. 6. San Diego FC (👎) 📸 Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Advertisement San Diego have been one of the truly marvelous surprise packages in MLS this year, but they were going to have to come back down to earth sooner or later. In Colorado this past weekend they did just that. Despite fighting back to make the scoreline look a bit more appealing, the hometown Rapids were rampant on the break and Mikey Varas' side looked unable to find a solution. 5. Minnesota United (no movement) 📸 Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images Minnesota United are one of the more consistent performers in MLS, but that isn't necessarily a compliment. Eric Ramsay's side tend to always find themselves in tight games, but given their superb tactical discipline they rarely ever get blown away, and on h Advertisement Failing to score against a sorry Toronto side doesn't bode well, but you would expect the Loons to bounce back. 4. Charlotte FC (👍) 📸 David Kirouac-Imagn Images Charlotte continue to roll in 2025, and while a win against Montréal is a feat most MLS teams will capture this season, the three points ensured Dean Smith's side will head into the next matchday 2nd in the Eastern Conference. 3. Inter Miami (👎) 📸 Patrick McDermott - 2025 Getty Images Miami have fallen out of first in our rankings for the first time in a number of weeks — two consecutive goalless draws when you boast some of the most prolific attacking talent this league has ever seen will do that to you. Advertisement But with that aforementioned talent, you can bet the Herons will string together some wins in the near future. 2. Columbus Crew (👍) 📸 Jeff Le-Imagn Images Eight games. The Crew are closing in on a double-digit unbeaten streak after a thrilling comeback in in St. Louis Sunday evening. Diego Rossi is playing at an MVP-caliber level, and now Dániel Gazdag has been thrown into the mix after Columbus splashed the cash to add more talent from a point of strength. Look out folks, Wilfried Nancy's Crew are at it again. 1. Vancouver Whitecaps (👍) 📸 Derek Cain - 2025 Getty Images It is no surprise that the high-flying 'Caps have made into the number one spot this week. Jesper Sørensen's side put on a show against Austin on Saturday, thanks in large part to a historic four-goal performance from Brian White.
