Columbus road construction open house

COLUMBUS, Ga. () — The Georgia Department of Transportation is planning major upgrades for two busy Columbus Roadways, and they're asking for community feedback. The Georgia Department of Transportation, GDOT, and the Transportation Investment Act, TIA, program shared proposed upgrades along Andrews and Brennan Road. Both corridors carry two-lane traffic and have been flagged for safety concerns, including frequent rear-end crashes and poor pedestrian access. 'There were some high crash areas on Andrews, there was a bad skew and a lot of abnormally high crashes at that point.' Says TIA Regional Coordinator, William Eastin, 'Same thing on Brennan we'll be adding a turn lane to help alleviate some rear end collisions that we saw in the traffic data.' The projects are still in the concept phase, but early plans include improved lighting, landscaping, and features for pedestrian and cyclist safety. Eastin says now is the time for the public to weigh in before final designs and right-of-way acquisition begin. 'We've had some coordination with the city kind of going back and forth on what the needs were when the citizens voted.' says Eastin. Addressing the many construction projects currently in the works, Eastin said, 'There's going to be a lot of design, a lot of construction coming on. So just please be patient and drive safe and watch out for our construction workers that we have in the field.' Officials expect to begin advertising for construction by the end of 2026 and estimate a two-year construction period. Residents can review project materials online and submit comments through May 27th. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
