Police presence near Eastman School of Music shuts down surrounding streets

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester Police and University of Rochester Public Safety vehicles line the perimeter of the Eastman School of Music Friday. A News 8 photojournalist on scene said police have been seen interviewing bystanders, and the intersection of Swan Street and East Main Street has been blocked off with caution tape by police. A cop was seen walking arm in arm with a man into the building, who was then shortly walked back outside and placed in the back of a cop car. No handcuffs were visible. An undamaged car is being towed from the area, according to our photojournalist. News 8 has reached out to RPD for more information. Stay with RochesterFirst as this scene develops. 3 Eastman students headed to Indiana after receiving national honor

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Three Eastman School of Music students are celebrating after being named as the winners of the 2025 Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition. A representative from the competition says the national program recognizes 'exceptional young musicians across jazz, classical, and contemporary genres.' A saxophonist 'committed to bridging the gap between performers and audiences by bringing music to unconventional spaces and fostering cultural dialogue through performance,' Zachary Costello has garnered national and international recognition for his artistry. Through many awards, Costello has proven his dedication to the instrument by incorporating elements of Korean folk music into new works. Originally from Japan, Kai Gray is a percussionist who has remained an active ensemble musician. Gray has put his skills to the drum in a variety of ensembles and world music groups. in his second year of undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music. Born in China, Yanzuo Nicole Liu has been playing the piano since she was five years old. She moved to the United States at 14. At sixteen, Liu got accepted into the Juilliard Pre-College and is now pursuing a Master of Music Degree at the Eastman School of Music. Liu has participated at recitals at prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. All three winners will join a group of 11 winners from across the country this summer when they perform at the Bands of America Summer Symposium, receive national recognition, and participate in professional development workshops to help launch their music career.
