Hovercraft used to rescue swimmers in busy day for Southend Coastguard
SOUTHEND'S Coastguard and RNLI rescued five casualties with the help of a hovercraft yesterday as high-visitors numbers saw a busy day for the services. The Coastguard responded to a number of incidents yesterday as thousands of visitors made the most of sky-high temperatures. The casualties rescued by hovercraft had been struggling in the sea and the Coastguard has today warned sun-seekers to exercise caution whilst making the most of the good weather. A spokesperson for HM Coastguard Southend said: 'We were tasked to receive five casualties picked up by the RNLI hovercraft off Sealife Centre struggling in water. 'Coastguard officers received the casualties and provided primary casualty care whilst awaiting East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust paramedics. Man has life threatening injuries after scooter crash on M1
A man in his 40s has been left with life-threatening injuries after a scooter collided with the central reservation of the M1 motorway. Hertfordshire Police said a grey Yamaha scooter crashed at about 15:30 BST on Wednesday near junction eight, northbound, for Hemel Hempstead. The road was closed overnight but has since reopened. The force said the man and a woman in her 40s were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police, the East of England Ambulance Service, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Herts and Essex Air Ambulance Service all attended. Sgt Chris Whales said: "As part of our investigations into what happened, I am appealing to anyone who either witnessed the collision or was driving in the area at the time of the incident to please contact me."He also appealed for anyone with dashcam footage to get in touch. The road, just a few miles away in Bedfordshire, was also closed for several hours on Wednesday, northbound between junctions 11 for Luton and 11A for Dunstable and Houghton Regis, following a crash. Two cars and two lorries were involved, and firefighters also tackled an unrelated lorry fire, which was part of the traffic caught within the closure, National Highways road was shut overnight for emergency resurfacing work and for pre-planned works to be carried out and has since reopened. Third man arrested after 'major fight' in Newmarket

Man in 'serious condition' after 'major fight'
Two men have been taken to hospital - one in a "serious condition" - following a "major fight in the town centre" with officers making two arrests. Suffolk Police were called to High Street, Newmarket, at around 15:40 GMT on Saturday, following a report of an "altercation" involving "a number" of people. It added that two people needed medical treatment. The East of England Ambulance service told the BBC: "It was a major fight in the town centre. Three ambulances were sent. One patient, a male, was taken to Addenbrooke's hospital in a serious condition." Two men, aged 26 and 23 from Newmarket, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, police said. In a social media post, the force previously said the road had been closed in both directions, but it has since reopened. A police spokesperson asked witnesses or people with information about the incident to "contact Bury St Edmunds Police quoting reference 37/12771/25".
